NL West, September 29: D’backs clinch

The Diamondbacks’ storybook season just became even more storied on Saturday night, as they clinched the National League West title before even taking the field against the Rockies.

It’s the fourth division title in the franchise’s 10-year history and its first since 2002. The D-backs’ fate was sealed when the second-place San Diego Padres lost to the Brewers at Milwaukee, 4-3, in 11 innings earlier in the day. They also clinched the NL’s best record with at least 90 wins and also secured home-field advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Famous last words:

Heath Taco Bell: "I know we will win the division."

Tony Donut Gwynn: "The Dbacks will miss the playoffs."

SDPD: "We believe Heath Bell and Tony Gwynn committed dual suicide by overdosing on Krispy Kremes."

And Gwynn's own son got the clutch, two-out-in-the-ninth game-tying hit to prevent Hoffman from nailing down the save.

Meanwhile, Arizona's expansion cousin recently clinched last place in their division for the 9th time. The Devil Rays have never had fewer than 90 losses in a season.

And the #1 overall draft pick for the second year in a row.

Awkward Thanksgiving at the Gwynn house this year

Perhaps Heath Bell was talking about the first-order wins division?

Jim McLennan has a video tribute to the newly crowned 2007 NL West champions. Well done, Jim.

Good thing he wasn't talking about the second or third order win division

Or the actual win division, you know. 'Cause ya can't fool that old goat Pythagoras...

I wonder if Levski would be singing an entirely different tune if the Diamondbacks won the pythagorean standings and some other team beat them by being outscored.

The DBacks will become the first team in history to have the best record in their league despite having a negative run differential... unless they defeat the Rockies 37-3 tomorrow.

The Padres did A LOT of trash talking in recent weeks.....so some of this is deserved. Still, chill out Lev...Karma is a #####. We could end up facing them in the NLCS.
