NL Wildcard race: August 30, 2008

MLB.com: Brewers rough up reeling Pirates

It took the Brewers a few innings to figure out Pirates starter Paul Maholm, but a five-run rally in the sixth put all questions to rest, as Milwaukee beat the Pirates, 11-3, on Saturday night at PNC Park.

MLB.com: Looper rocked by Astros in Houston

A six-run first inning sank Braden Looper and the Cardinals on Saturday night. St. Louis fell to the Astros, 8-5, at Minute Maid Park… The first seven batters to face Looper all reached base, with five of them connecting for extra bases.

MIL 79-56
STL 74-62 (5.5 GB)
PHI 74-62 (5.5 GB; 1 GB of NL East)

By the way, Cameron explained the shirt untucking routine.

Cameron's dad would come home from work and untuck his shirt.

Mike Cameron has been playing for a long time and by all accounts is a class act.

And the Pirates are, well, not good....

Guess the Cards are still fuming about the Brewers lack of etiquette as opposed to focussing on minor things like the current opponent.

La Russa has made it abundantly clear that players are not supposed to have fun during major league ball games. It's a business.

Could the Brewers do me a favor and hire Gene Mauch and Willie Randolph as advisors? Otherwise the wild card chase in the NL is over.

Gb:

Yost has the sense to stay out of the way. It's something of a shocker.

The bigger surprise to me is the team playing like this with Prince being pretty pedestrian. Frankly, he's a net negative at the moment given his defense and baserunning. I couldn't be more disappointed in his glovework this season. It's as if he has stopped trying.

The less charitable folks around the team suggest that the contract, or lack thereof, is the issue.

If so, yuck...

I was surprised to see Fielder has only 13 errors. I have him at 18 and have't scored every game.

'stros are 20-9 this month - which is third in the NL.

Unfortunately for them, the two teams with better winning percentages this month are well, you know...

MIL Journal-Sentinel: Minor adjustments for playoff run
Melvin referred to September call-ups from the minors. They will report to Milwaukee later today and be in uniform Monday for the afternoon game against the Mets at Miller Park.

The Brewers will add another lefty to their bullpen with Class AAA Nashville’s Mitch Stetter, provide more relief depth with Tim Dillard and Mark DiFelice, and are expected to add to their bench with catcher Vinny Rottino, outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr., and infielders Joe Dillon, Mat Gamel and Brad Nelson.
