well it was fun while it lasted...

Kyle McClellan... really?

If the mighty mighty Strasburg couldn't stop the Braves, then yep, it's a done deal.

Why was Carpenter pulled?

Harvey's, plz refrain from taunting the predictably heartbroken Cardinal faithful. The answer to your question is the answer to all questions in this postmodern era of baseball:

Because TLR.

Chip Carey annoys me, so the Braves semi-collapse was fun. But I will take the Cubs dashing the Cardinals' playoff hopes over Chip's dismay any time.

Why was Carpenter pulled?

He was pinch-hit for leading off the bottom of the 7th in a 1-1 ballgame.

vortex

Ok, let me re-phrase.

Bullpen is obviously tired

Carpenter only at 105 pitches.

Carpenter can swing a bit for a pitcher and if he makes an out it's the leadoff out and only one out.

I still wonder about the decision.

I thought it was a strange decision. Bullpen's gassed, and TLR seems to prefer keeping a cruising starter in over summoning a pitcher, even in a tie game. Not a great move. Whatever. It was exciting for a while. Go Brewers and Tigers.

I was just thinking, "Is there a team in the NL Central that I don't enjoy watching lose?" And the answer is, "Not really." I mean, I don't mind if the Pirates win, I guess. And of course, watching the Cubs lose trumps watching LaRussa and Baker lose. But not by *that* much.

and most of the country feels the same way about the two East divisions...with possible exception of the Jays in the AL East.

Sure. But most of the country consists of friggin' flyover states, so who the hell cares what they think, right?

Just because people land in Atlanta doesn't mean a) they have a choice and b.) they actually stay.

Marmol just gave the Cards a 2-1 win, by walking three in the ninth, topping things off with a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Thankfully the Cubs bullpen has been one of their strengths all year long!

And the Braves go down.

Obviously ESPN agrees with you....

ugly performance by him, and he can't blame the ump either.

Someone check Marmol's bank account, this must be 1919 all over again. Why didn't he throw a fastball?

Braves have been one out away from a playoff berth like three times. Sigh.

Oh, Cubs. You got my hopes up....

I take it you're new to The Carlos Marmol Experience. When he's wild, he's wild, and it doesn't matter what he throws; if anything, his command of his fastball's worse than his command of his slider. Might as well throw the pitch that's unhittable when it's in the strike zone.

Yep, I've seen him blow my guys away, and have seen him do a performance like that against them.

I see. So Marmol is of the Mitch Williams/John Rocker break-out-the-antacid school of closing.

I still can't believe that happened, though. Unreal.
