Girardi would have Carpenter in there.

Future Hall of Famer Carlos Beltran setting the table there.

I wonder if the outfielder could have gotten that going full bore, the IF has to peel off earlier.
   105. cardsfanboy Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4279432)
Cain is dealing....
   106. Eric J can SABER all he wants to Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:11 PM (#4279434)
Girardi would have Carpenter in there.

Yeah, but Schumaker would also be playing instead of Craig.

I had to argue with people that benching Holliday is a bad thing yesterday, prove me right.
   108. cardsfanboy Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4279436)
That pitch was close, Fox track says ball, but it was a tough pitch to lay off with the way Cain is pitching.
   109. Guts Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:13 PM (#4279438)
Nice AB by Holliday, didn't quite get enough of it.

   110. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:14 PM (#4279439)
i remember nights like this in san fran it taking a cannon shot to get one out of the ballpark

these pitchers should throw their pitches with confidence

I had to argue with people that benching Holliday is a bad thing yesterday, prove me right.

Thank goodness we got a closeup of Cain's face while he made that pickoff throw.
   113. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4279443)
that would have been embarrassing getting picked off 3 feet from the base
   114. cardsfanboy Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4279444)
Is fox averaging 1 out of 2 pitches with the correct camera angle so far?
   115. Gamingboy Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:15 PM (#4279445)
Stolen Base [X]. Beltran now 11-11.
   116. JJ1986 Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:16 PM (#4279446)
I hate the Cardinals, but I think I might root for them in the WS, if they win tonight, because of Beltran.
   117. Eric J can SABER all he wants to Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:16 PM (#4279447)
Future Hall of Famer Carlos Beltran with an excellent impression of someone who didn't come out of a game with a knee strain earlier in the series.
   118. Guts Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:16 PM (#4279448)
Was Craig swinging on his own, or was that a hit and run? If the latter, that is not a very good idea.

Craig swings at the same pitch again, though, so I guess it could have been a straight steal.

Annnd pops it up. Of course. At least Craig made contact!

Outside of this week, I've never heard "Hurry to lose, slow down to win".... I don't think that is a theory that guys like Greg Maddux or Mark Buerhle believe in.

If there was a makeable play on that, the Conradian belongs to the runner. Lohse shouldn't have even considered that play with a decent running performance.
   139. Guts Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:29 PM (#4279473)
GAME OVER.

Agreed. I have zero confidence in the Cards' offense right now.

It would be one thing if Posey, Panda, Cain, etc. were winning this series. But it's been Vogelsong, Pagan, and Marco ####### Scutaro. Just a disappointing few days.
   140. Tim D Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:29 PM (#4279474)
Nice damage control by Lohse.

I think the Conradian aspect of it was the spiked throw to first. That was my thought anyway, not sure what gb was thinking. Agreed that Pagan getting thrown out at the plate would have been blunderiffic.
   143. Mefisto Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:31 PM (#4279477)
Posey just looks lost at the plate. I can't tell if he's pressing or just come down to earth after his second half.
   144. salvomania Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:32 PM (#4279478)
Cmon Guts, LAEHOA, etc.

We've all seen the Birds routinely break out for 4-5-6-7 runs, often initiated by a non-usual suspect. Craig looks close--he's making contact!---Holliday hit the ball hard, Matt Cain is not a god but a man, there's still 24 outs to go.

I like our chances.
   145. JJ1986 Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:33 PM (#4279480)
Did McCarver just say two of the Cardinals are great playoff performers and not list Freese?

I don't understand why CFB hates the behind-the-catcher angle. What's so terrible about it?

Yadi's already seen more pitches than he saw all Game 6.
   148. cardsfanboy Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:34 PM (#4279485)
Ump seems to be calling the strikezone per fox track, but man a lot of close pitches to take. (which is good, Cardinals hit better, like most teams I imagine, when they, force the pitcher to throw strikes)
   149. Guts Posted: October 22, 2012 at 08:34 PM (#4279486)

Besides not being able to see the type of pitch, whether it's up or down, whether it's inside or outside, how the batter reacts to it, or how the catcher reacts it, nothing.

You don't see anything. The plate is hidden, the ball pretty much disappears from view. The behind the pitcher angle is simply the right place to watch a pitch from.

This team showing patience is a great sign of hope.

Freese having a great AB here. Cards' issue has been doing something with these good ABs.

Hey, a walk! This inning is looking up a bit. Oh wait, Descalso.

Why should I be satisfied with a less useful angle? It's not the end of the world but the playoffs are not the time for cutesy angles.

I love alternate camera angles for everything else, I would prefer for them to pan out more for the defense, but for the pitch, you cannot see anything from behind the home plate. They might as well turn off the camera completely for the pitch, it will give the viewer the exact same experience.

I know he's a punching bag but McCarver explaining why he thinks the outfielders are too deep is why I like him. He gets his opinion out there in advance.

Big play by Crawford. Off the bat I thought it was a hit.

Hopefully they can keep some pressure on Cain. Meanwhile, Lohse needs to stop giving up line drives.

Great catch. If behind the catcher was from a bit higher and panned out, it would be great. My favorite place to watch a game is second or third deck behind the plate.

EDIT: OK, on the replay, I see that Crawford did in fact have to leap... I would have preferred not to have the tying run not score due to a good play...

From the Giants perspective, this doesn't look good despite the lead. Cain is not sharp at all.

I don't think so, Cain is getting the real strike zone, it's about time that they stopped calling that 4 inch outside pitch a strike.

Web Gem? Really? On a weakly hit humpback liner that the SS didn't really even have to leap for? The ghost of Jim Edmonds lives on in a SS???

I guess I'm Mr. Contrarian this series (although I am agreeing with what you quoted), but I think this has been McCarver's best series in awhile.

That's an awfully low standard, I can see it being possible, but I'm not sure that is actually a compliment.

I am with salvo on that catch. If I were at SS there, I think I have a non-zero chance of catching that ball, which should disqualify it from being a great play.

Oh, duh. I think I just couldn't get away from hearing "amps" and couldn't figure out why that was funny.
