And that was also kind of bizarre.
Cards have to score six in the bottom of this inning for Kelly to be the winning pitcher now.
Lohse is getting crushed. Cain gives up a hard hit ball - catch made. Lohse gives up a hard hit ball - double.
BABIP'd away.
Sorry. If you finish in the second wild-card and come back from a 6-0 deficit in an elimination game, you don't get to ##### about "luck" going against you later.

It's been a nice season. These last three games have been beyond miserable, but one must give credit to the Giants. They have destroyed the Cards in all phases of the game.
Not the LDS Game 5 I'd expect them to learn that lesson from.
Kelly's been really good in this series, FWIW.
No way they score 5.
One would think they know something about recent Cardinal history as well.
Wow. Just a terrible decision by Kozma. Cards are self-destructing on the fundamentals. Sorry, BBTF Cards fans.
I don't recall ever seeing anything quite like that.
Edited to say:
Ok, the double hit explains it.
I'm pretty sure Zito just told Pence that it's a two stroke penalty to hit a moving ball.
Still think that series was worse than this one.
But this is getting pretty ugly.
. . . And Pete Kozma was never heard from again . . .
and those guys are sitting around while the season is getting away
I like the Panda's ass theory better.
Almost looked like it might have been three times on the replay. This is ground ball hits pebble territory (except not in the eighth inning with the batting team down by 2).
I really thought Matheny had done a nice job with the bullpen but the last two days have been perplexing to say the least.
In Kelly's defense, he's had to get five or six outs this inning.
At least once that I'm aware of.
That's the thing..he and Descalzo and all the other Triple A players that got them here will be a couple lines in baseball reference after this.
It's still more fun than human beings should be allowed to have watching this. Probably with the Cardinal mega luck another earthquake will hit swallowing up the Giant team only.
Nice play, Pete, by the way.
but you need strikeouts with this defense. kelly pitching to contact
Scu-ta-ro!
That was some really bad luck for Kelly.
No way does Kozma get a mulligan. You have to make that play in the big leagues. There are a ton of weird, broken bat ground balls that get turned into DP's. Most of them are fielded cleanly so we don't see a million replays.
In the last three of those blown series, the Game 7 scores have been 11-0, 15-0 and whatever tonight's turns out to be.
What would be his proper adjectival form? Kozmian? Kozmanian? Kozmaniac? Or would you go with a hybrid - Kozradian, perhaps?
Cardinals up 3 games to 1 in '96 NLCS vs. the Braves:
Game 5: Braves 14, Cardinals 0. Seven-zip after two.
Game 6: Braves 3, Cardinals 1.
Game 7: Braves 15, Cardinals 0, with Braves scoring six in the first.
At the very least, the Cardinals are still in line to exactly match their Games 5, 6 and 7 offensive output.
All for Kozmanaught.
Pretty sure Cabrera has the highest Championship Probability Added per postseason PA in baseball history, non-Hal-Smith division.
Kozmapolitan, of course.
Yeah, Cain is not exactly dominant. Cards will need to start chipping away ASAP, though.
Cain in this game has actually been quite similar to Lohse in Game 3.
Remember all those stories early on when they talked about the Cardinals nearly DFA'ing Kozma 4 times? Now we know why.
Which is sort of like saying what the worst type of cheese pizza is...
Maybe it was the angle of the broken off barrel at contact that fooled Kozma?
disagree---it's rolling off toward the end of the bat, with the last contact flipping it more toward the middle of the field.
I think he was letting the outfielders know he had it.
I disagree. I think the third hit of the bat resulted in a kind of spin that Kozma has never seen before (or, for that matter, most anyone else). Balls hit to the left side by righthanded hitters don't move that way.
Of course, it doesn't excuse the lousy decision to throw home or the piss poor flip on the DP.
If the Cardinals don't mount a pretty substantial rally... yes, actually. The current "winner" is the 1965 World Series, with a total score of 12.29; this series so far is around 11.80, including this game so far. So it's got some distance to cover to move out of last - not a ton, but 7-0 makes even a small gain difficult.
I think he's just excited about being so close to winning a pennant. I think you can cut guys slack in a game like this for being a little emotional.
This is my interpretation, too. That ball went a direction it wasn't supposed to go.
(Hey, look, Scrabble!)
