That was bizarre.

And that was also kind of bizarre.

Past a diving-in-two-directions-at-once Kozma!

Cards have to score six in the bottom of this inning for Kelly to be the winning pitcher now.

A play that goofy and awkward could only come off the bat of Hunter Pence.
   305. Jose Can Still Seabiscuit Posted: October 22, 2012 at 09:18 PM (#4279665)
The replays from behind the plate make it look like that ball by Pence had a tail on it.

Hitting the ball so poorly it can't be fielded is the new market inefficiency.

Lohse is getting crushed. Cain gives up a hard hit ball - catch made. Lohse gives up a hard hit ball - double.

BABIP'd away.

Sorry. If you finish in the second wild-card and come back from a 6-0 deficit in an elimination game, you don't get to ##### about "luck" going against you later.

I come from the future with news. In game 7 of the 2012 NLCS, all the luck the Cardinals had in the previous decade was evened out. The Giants won 219-5 with 470 bloop singles.

It's been a nice season. These last three games have been beyond miserable, but one must give credit to the Giants. They have destroyed the Cards in all phases of the game.

McCarver making the point that the gravitational pull of Sandoval's ass prevented Kozma from seeing the ball.

That's a ridiculous hit/error call. I don't care how much spin there there was - a major league shortstop should field that ball. The booth also said they scored it a double. That can't possibly be accurate, can it?

Edited to say:
Ok, the double hit explains it.

I'm pretty sure Zito just told Pence that it's a two stroke penalty to hit a moving ball.

Almost looked like it might have been three times on the replay. This is ground ball hits pebble territory (except not in the eighth inning with the batting team down by 2).

That's the thing..he and Descalzo and all the other Triple A players that got them here will be a couple lines in baseball reference after this.

It's still more fun than human beings should be allowed to have watching this. Probably with the Cardinal mega luck another earthquake will hit swallowing up the Giant team only.

Nice play, Pete, by the way.

I watched the super slo-mo in slo-mo and Pence hit the ball three times. He hit it twice after the bat broke and the third time it rolled off the end of the bat and gave it the spin. Kozma reacted to the first hit and I think he gets a mulligan on the play because it was such an unusual hit.
   356. Tim D Posted: October 22, 2012 at 09:30 PM (#4279719)

If Kozma makes another mistake, I will severely have to consider at the very least putting him in as a synonym of Conradian.

No way does Kozma get a mulligan. You have to make that play in the big leagues. There are a ton of weird, broken bat ground balls that get turned into DP's. Most of them are fielded cleanly so we don't see a million replays.
   363. esseff Posted: October 22, 2012 at 09:33 PM (#4279729)
The Cardinals are the only team to have blown a 3-1 lead in a best-of-7 series more than once. This will be their fourth.

In the last three of those blown series, the Game 7 scores have been 11-0, 15-0 and whatever tonight's turns out to be.

What would be his proper adjectival form? Kozmian? Kozmanian? Kozmaniac? Or would you go with a hybrid - Kozradian, perhaps?
   370. salvomania Posted: October 22, 2012 at 09:36 PM (#4279739)
For those too young to remember (or who have suppressed the memory):

Cardinals up 3 games to 1 in '96 NLCS vs. the Braves:

Game 5: Braves 14, Cardinals 0. Seven-zip after two.
Game 6: Braves 3, Cardinals 1.
Game 7: Braves 15, Cardinals 0, with Braves scoring six in the first.

At the very least, the Cardinals are still in line to exactly match their Games 5, 6 and 7 offensive output.

The 2nd and 3rd hots of Pence's bat would seem to alter the path of the ball more toward third, which doesn't account for the SS going the wrong way.

Maybe it was the angle of the broken off barrel at contact that fooled Kozma?

disagree---it's rolling off toward the end of the bat, with the last contact flipping it more toward the middle of the field.

Yeah, the team of destiny feeling sure got passed from the Cardinals to the Giants fast.

Trying to decide if that was jerk-ish, or just a reaction to the force of the ball and his hard pull of his glove.

Was Scutaro signalling something after he fielded that ball? Looked like he was making a "safe" sign. I mean, he had all the time in the world to throw the ball, but still.

I think he was letting the outfielders know he had it.

No way does Kozma get a mulligan. You have to make that play in the big leagues. There are a ton of weird, broken bat ground balls that get turned into DP's. Most of them are fielded cleanly so we don't see a million replays.

I disagree. I think the third hit of the bat resulted in a kind of spin that Kozma has never seen before (or, for that matter, most anyone else). Balls hit to the left side by righthanded hitters don't move that way.

Of course, it doesn't excuse the lousy decision to throw home or the piss poor flip on the DP.

Can the guy who rates the series please let us know if this is shaping up to be the shitt!est 7-game series ever???

If the Cardinals don't mount a pretty substantial rally... yes, actually. The current "winner" is the 1965 World Series, with a total score of 12.29; this series so far is around 11.80, including this game so far. So it's got some distance to cover to move out of last - not a ton, but 7-0 makes even a small gain difficult.

I think he's just excited about being so close to winning a pennant. I think you can cut guys slack in a game like this for being a little emotional.

This is my interpretation, too. That ball went a direction it wasn't supposed to go.

I forgotten that Frank Cabrera also had a huge hit the next year in the playoffs, thanks for pointing that out, Eric. I remember noting it at the time but it was soon forgotten (probably because they lost the game and then the series). I always thought it was unfair to Cabrera that his GW single became known as the Sid Bream play.
