HOW WILL THE NATIONALS SQUANDER YET ANOTHER PLAYOFF SERIES TODAY??!!
   2. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: October 10, 2017 at 12:48 PM (#5548834)
they won't because it'll be rained out
   3. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 01:10 PM (#5548861)
Even if the Nats lose today, it'll be hard to really argue with a straight face that they squandered anything (of course, they could blow a big lead and then sure, it could fit).

They've wasted 2 great pitching performances, but only because they've also had to face great pitching performances.
   4. PreservedFish Posted: October 10, 2017 at 01:13 PM (#5548865)
"Squander" really doesn't seem like the right word, unless you think the Nationals are vastly superior or are somehow owed the series victory. They're not. They're being outplayed by an equally good team. That's not squandering, it's just losing.
   5. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: October 10, 2017 at 01:24 PM (#5548876)
It has been an evenly matched series with the Cubs getting an extra bounce or two. Frustrating, but not squandering.

I'm seeing a 92% chance of rain at 5pm, with about a quarter inch of rain expected in the game window. Doesn't look promising.

Am I the only one just realizing that the division series have presenting sponsors? We're not far away from "Taco Bell presents The World Series," are we?

It's been an EXTRAORDINARILY close series thus far. I mean, you could literally replay what - maybe 5 pitches? Fewer? -- and the series could be over with a Nats sweep... or a Cubs sweep... or the Nats could be up 2-1.

That's really amazing to me. You don't even need to get into a sequence of pitches or proxy if/thens... you could almost - if not literally - change the outcome of a single PA in each of the three games and end up with this series being over in either direction.
   8. Quaker Posted: October 10, 2017 at 01:46 PM (#5548906)
Is it even worth heading to the stadium this afternoon or should I just extend my hotel reservation an extra day and plan on going tmrw?
   9. Pat Rapper's Delight (as quoted on MLB Network) Posted: October 10, 2017 at 01:50 PM (#5548907)
Am I the only one just realizing that the division series have presenting sponsors?

No, although it has left me wondering what the AL presenting sponsor is [not going to name them since they're not giving me money to do so] without caring enough to actually look them up.
   10. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:13 PM (#5548933)
The rain forecast start time has been slowing moving back and back; it was supposed to start at 2:30, then 4, now 4:30. I expect them to try and play, or else they'll announce a postponement at least on hour before start time.
   11. Zonk Tormundbane Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:18 PM (#5548938)
Sounds like the forecast works better for the afternoon start time, but as it's the only game on the slate today -- I cannot help but wonder why MLB/TBS has it as an afternoon start rather than prime time.
   12. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:18 PM (#5548939)
Nats lineup: Turner/Werth/Harper/Zimmerman/Murphy/Rendon/Weiters/Taylor

I don't think that's ideal, but Werth has had some good ABs this series.

Cubs lineup: Jay/Bryant/Rizzo/Contreras/Zobrist(RF)/Schwarber/Russell/Baez

Heyward's anemic bat sits.

It was tentative to start in the afternoon, with the option to move to night based on the LAD/ARI. However, because of the rain, yesterday MLB said it'd be the afternoon start regardless.

Good to see the networks didn't win out over the weather (even though the weather may still win, or something).

I thought the plan was to move it to prime time with the LA win but that the early start worked better for rain. It looks like if they'd started at 1:30, they'd have gotten it in.

Well, I'm sure they've lined up additional sponsors for rain delays, mentions of the radar by the announcers, etc.

You think I'm joking? The announcement of the temperature at the start of the game comes with a plug for some company on the Cubs radio broadcasts. Four Seasons Heating & Air Conditioning, I think, because you see what they did there.
   16. Zonk Tormundbane Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:22 PM (#5548946)
Ahhh - OK...that makes sense.

With a 5:38 ET start, the game will probably end around 9 or 930pm ET. To me, that is a huge win for fans and advertisers.
   19. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:43 PM (#5548967)
Four hours for a playoff game? That seems optimistic.
   20. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 10, 2017 at 02:53 PM (#5548977)
Still at 90% chance of rain from 6-7 pm CST, and 100% at 8:00, according to the tiny meteorologist who I assume lives in my phone. They may be able to start the game, but it doesn't look good for getting very far.
   21. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 03:01 PM (#5548986)
...now rain at 5pm
   22. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 03:18 PM (#5549009)
What's more likely to happen:

1. Game is postponed before it starts
2. Start the game, and just deal with extended delay or delays

If #2, at one point would they suspend and restart the game tomorrow? I have to guess that they really want to avoid that more than anything. I also wonder the latest they'll call the game (IOW, will they open the gates and let fans in in the next half or so).
   23. Zonk Tormundbane Posted: October 10, 2017 at 03:51 PM (#5549059)
A buddy with tickets assures me that the weather in Chicago is "it's a just going to THREATEN to rain day, not an actual rain day"... but I'll defer to folks on the ground.

If it hasn't started yet - I would say that my recollection of viewing the hourly this AM was that it was supposed to rain all day, so if it hasn't started by down, maybe he's right.

According to the one in my phone, 100% from 5 to 9, dipping to 60% at 10, between 85-95% through 1 AM, and 100% at 2 AM. It doesn't tell me if this is the kind of rain the players can slog through, or a total shutdown event.

I would really like to not wait until Wednesday night to know if I'm going Nationals park on Thursday or not.

Rain approaching Wrigley tonight. TBS was asked to start game at 1 PM, and refused. Huh.

He's not verified on twitter, but it appears it's him. Is he right about this?

I'm currently on the 4th floor of my work building, however it's overcast and has looked on the verge of raining all day. It was originally supposed to start raining around noon, per the forecasts yesterday. It's slowly been pushing back. I can't see how it won't rain at all based on those.

Replying to @kapaya1234
$$..commercials sold for original time slot..moving game to 1:00 probably reduces viewership thus requiring TBS to rebate $$$ to advertisers.

Where is TVErik when you need him to vet these thoughts??
   28. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 04:04 PM (#5549077)
Oh, I understand why TBS would push back on MLB, I'm just curious if Chip really does know this is true for sure or merely speculating.

I suppose in the grand scheme -- if you really want to be a 'look on the bright side' -- getting a potentially 'free' preview of Jake's hammy in a game that won't count isn't awful. Potentially seeing Strasburg again, OTOH....

   34. Walt Davis Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:06 PM (#5549149)
A rainout does make the SP decisions interesting and possibly teaches the Cubs a lesson about starting Lester over Quintana in G2. (Lester pitched just fine of course and may do so again if necessary.)
   35. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:12 PM (#5549153)
It's not raining. So, this is just stalling until the inevitable.
   36. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:13 PM (#5549154)
[34] I think it's the opposite. A rainout allows teams to use their #1 and #2 starters both on four days rest in games 4&5. Makes the choice easy. The tough decision is the standard one of whether to use the ace on short rest or the #4 starter in game 4.
   37. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:15 PM (#5549155)
I'm not sure many people would have, or did, argue quintana should have gone ahead of Lester.

I also don't see how that matters for a potential game 5, I'd guess both are available if needed, though Lester could go longer having not pitched game 3. Also, how does the rainout change anything, game 5 is still the same day?
   38. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:17 PM (#5549156)
Tarp is going out, no rain yet.

   39. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:48 PM (#5549171)
4:30 update is they'll meet again at 5pm. No rain, even here where I live about 10 miles west of Wrigley.

Should have had a 1pm game.
   40. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:51 PM (#5549175)

   41. Voodoo Posted: October 10, 2017 at 05:52 PM (#5549176)
I am not happy about the possibility of a postponement, but neither would I have been thrilled with a 1 pm CST start time, considering I had to duck out of work early yesterday to catch the thrilling conclusion.

It has a hard time containing my 6 year old's wiffle balls, so maybe even Zobrist could homer here.
   47. Zonk Tormundbane Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:10 PM (#5549188)
Is it raining?

Buddy texting me from the game says this is bullshit... it hasn't even so much as sprinkled since the original start time, which means by this point - they could have already gotten an inning or two in.

I mean, WTF - I get it... be prepared... but the forecast seems to say that they're delaying things right into the teeth of consistent, evening rain. If they're trying to get the game in today - it seems to me that YOU PROBABLY OUGHT TO BE PLAYING WHEN IT'S NOT RAINING!

This is some kind of karmic payback for the alleged shenanigans i/r/t a Brewers game postponement, isn't it...
   48. Bote Man Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:12 PM (#5549190)
We have only seen black smoke from the chimney. A nation awaits.
   49. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:14 PM (#5549192)
It's not up to the Cubs, right? If it were, they probably would have moved it earlier in the day. This is just MLB/TBS hoping the forecast is wrong and they can play today since there aren't any other games (IOW, were there a Dodgers/DBacks game tonight, this would have already been called off).

As for the karma thing, the Cubs lost that game, I'm pretty sure the non-existent karmic payback has already occurred.

Following beat writers frantically tweeting every Cubs or Nats exec every move is just not as exciting as actual baseball, including endless pitching changes.
   52. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:17 PM (#5549197)
Postponed to 3:08 tomorrow.

They could have done that hours ago.

Now started sprinkling.... and they just postponed.

He's pissed. Seems like they could be in the 3rd inning by now.

Postponed
   57. TomH Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:23 PM (#5549205)
rain rain come today
Nats don't really want to play
Strasburg wins tomorrow, hey
   58. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 10, 2017 at 06:24 PM (#5549206)
It's raining hard here, and the radar makes it seem like it ain't stopping any time soon.

They just needed the rain to start as a cover for postponing it, but that surely isn't going to make anyone at the stadium happy.

Dan Kolko @masnKolko
Dusty says Strasburg is a little under the weather, like much of his roster. Dusty says he has "full confidence in Tanner."

You can imagine what is happening on Nats Twitter right now.
   63. Walt Davis Posted: October 10, 2017 at 07:06 PM (#5549248)
I'm not sure many people would have, or did, argue quintana should have gone ahead of Lester.

I certainly felt that way, not sure I ever said it or not. Quintana's the better pitcher right now.

And it would have mattered if Joe had made the sensible decision to start Hendricks in G4 with the rainout, putting the G2 starter into G5 starter if necessary ... which should have been Quintana.
   64. The Yankee Clapper Posted: October 10, 2017 at 07:17 PM (#5549256)
He's pissed. Seems like they could be in the 3rd inning by now.

Neither team, nor MLB, wanted to burn the starters on the hope of getting 2 or 3 innings in. No good way to handle these situations - calling games too early gets folks ticked off if the forecast improves, but waiting around for the inevitable postponement is also a bummer.
