Even if Lackey starts game 1, someone will be on short rest for game 2.

Q. Well, here we go.

Also, my phone autocorrected “Q” to “A,” which I find amusing, for I am easily entertained.

This is what, the 34th inning?

Oh, come on, really? None of you can imagine a situation where a runner is approaching first base, knows the ball is going to get there at just about the same time as he does, and decides to make sure he's safe by taking out the first baseman?

I'm not following this discussion, but has this ever happened?
   805. Kiko Sakata Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:39 PM (#5552461)
I would have done multiple things differently tonight.

Me too.

I may be an idiot.

Me too.

I've criticized a number of Maddon's moves in this game in real time, but, overall, I think he's managed this game well. I just hope this all works out.

Game 2? We could all be dead by then.

Until you have a batter that doesn't understand how baseball is played, no one is going to veer off their run to the base to take out the fielder.

I will gladly just punt game 1 of NlCS if it means getting to the nlcs

Not that I know of, because everyone knows that would be/should be illegal. And yet the same thing at 2B is allowed, even under the new rule.

790: Think I pointed it out at some point during the season, but Edwards’s numbers are basically peak Marmol. Way too many walks, absurdly high K rate, absurdly few hits allowed.

Not unless the runner is a complete idiot. Because again, if he can get to the 1B in time to slide into him, he can get to the base.

The runner at 2B during a double play isn't allowed to "tackle" the fielder, either. If a runner at 1B wants to make a hard slide instead of running through the base on a bang-bang play, he's a complete moron.
   814. Voodoo Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5552470)
He's had a bad series. They need him the rest of the playoffs.

No, they don't. He's terrible. You can't count on him to throw a strike in any circumstance.
   815. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5552471)
Are you kidding me. That was clearly a strike
   816. bunyon Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5552472)
You don't have to veer off the base going to first. You slide, a little inside and hit the fielder just as he's receiving the throw. Why would this be illegal?
   817. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5552473)
no one is going to veer off their run to the base to take out the fielder.

Am I just not being clear here? (a) The runner wouldn't have to veer off of his path - he could just tackle or clothesline the 1B; and (b) did you not just see the play at 2B where Jay's slide was a full body-length to the inside of the bag to take out Turner?
   818. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5552474)
19. We're really gonna get to 25. Unbelievable.

How would you write the rule then? Clearly MLB didn't want the umpires having to guess about intent.

I'm not following this discussion, but has this ever happened?

In 1938, a first baseman named Joe Kuhel left the baseline and ran right into Hank Greenberg of the Tigers, intentionally spiking him. He was ruled safe after a brief scuffle with Hammerin Hank and teammates. Why did Kuhel do it? Not to beat the throw, but because he didn't want a Jewish man to break Babe Ruth's home run record.
   821. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5552477)
Q has to go 2 here. Has to. Davis can't.
   822. Walt Davis Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:43 PM (#5552478)
But at least now everyone understands why Maddon was so unwilling to use more of his pen in the World Series last year.

Except he kept using it instead of letting his starters work deep -- that WAS the problem. In 7 games of the WS, Cubs starters threw just 37 innings, giving up 13 runs (10 earned). (not including Lester's relief stint). The non-Lester relievers then threw 23 innings giving up 12, all earned. Maybe if he'd trusted his relievers less, they'd have won a bit more easily -- not that I care, we won.

A runner at 2B can't do this either!

Other than the fact that Jay just did essentially the same thing but from beneath.

Christ. I have a bad feeling that I'm going to go to bed drunk and pissed off tonight.

20. 20 mound visits.
   831. PreservedFish Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:45 PM (#5552487)
I am definitely rooting for extra innings at this point.

If Harper hits a grand slam they will name a monument after him in D.C.

Just checked, and the Cubs pitchers have thrown 51 balls. Feels like 151.

I'm talking a hate slide at first no tackle. Take the 1bman out and the throw goes to the wall. That's an advantage. Why isn't it legal?

A hard slide into the base is the same as "clothslining" the fielder?

You're just not being reasonable, dude.

It was in no way "into the base." It was as far off the base as he could get while still being able to touch the base. When the slide is way off line and designed specifically to take out the fielder, yeah.

   853. Kiko Sakata Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:50 PM (#5552509)
Holy hell! We're going to Wade Davis in the seventh inning!!? Joe, Joe, Joe!! Did you learn NOTHING from last year's World Series (yeah, yeah, "But we won that one!")

Bright side: Quintana should be good for Game 1 if we get to it.

I do have to question what the point was of putting Justin Wilson on the roster if you'd rather use a starting pitcher who's likely to be starting in two days and then use a relief pitcher who just gave up a grand slam yesterday for 2-2/3 innings.

Of course there's Lester.
   858. Textbook Editor Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:51 PM (#5552514)
I guess Maddon didn't want Quintana to be burned for Game 1? This makes no sense. Davis isn't getting 7 outs here.
   859. Brian C Posted: October 12, 2017 at 11:52 PM (#5552515)
Except he kept using it instead of letting his starters work deep -- that WAS the problem.

Except that I said "more" of the pen. I wasn't addressing the criticism that he took starters out too early, but the criticism that he didn't trust more guys in the pen.

At any rate, the one thing I really disagree with tonight is taking Almora out to chase a matchup in the fifth inning. I'd rather take an AB against a righthander from him than lose his defense, and I think Jay had a better shot at catching Murphy's double off of Montgomery than Zobrist did.

Plus, now Jay is out of the game even though Martin is sure to get a plate appearance in this game, which isn't a great idea either.

But it doesn't make sense to go straight at the 1Bman if the same distance (or shorter) is to the bag. It's simply easier to be SAFE at first base than it would be to interfere with the 1Bman and hope you are safe.

You're asking a base runner to do something completely illogical and counter productive.

Davis isn't getting 7 outs here.

I am absolutely certain that Joe Maddon's plan is for Wade Davis to get 7 outs here. We had this conversation in Game 5 of the World Series. And then we repeated the conversation in Game 6 of the World Series. And then we repeated the conversation in Game 7 of the World Series.

Whether Wade Davis can actually get 7 outs. Well, that remains to be seen (see Game 7).

It was in no way "into the base." It was as far off the base as he could get while still being able to touch the base. When the slide is way off line and designed specifically to take out the fielder, yeah.

Well, that's the rule. It was designed to allow exactly the kind of slide we saw. It's allowed in similar contexts at other bases. The best you can do to come up with a hypothetical arguing against it is an absurdly implausible scenario. I don't know what else to say.
