Q. How will the Reds win today?!

A. Homer Bailey is starting. A Reds win is unpossible.

HOW WILL THE YANKEES LOSE TODAY????

WILL THE RED SOX EVER STOP WINNING????

The DBacks are getting beaten again, badly.

The Brewers are 1-7 against the Cubs this year, and about to be 29-12 against everyone else.
   4. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:18 PM (#5678328)
Jordan Hicks just struck out some dude on three pitches, none of which reached 100 mph! (two sliders in the 80s, then a sinker at 99.9 mph)
   5. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:19 PM (#5678329)
OK, he struck out the next guy, also on three pitches: two 100+-mph sinkers, and a mid-80s slider.
   6. phredbird Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:19 PM (#5678332)
that was impressive, frankly. the batters looked totally baffled.
   7. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:20 PM (#5678333)
Possibly Hicks' best inning of the year: 1-2-3, seven pitches total, including two strikeouts.

Now Pham and Carpenter need to do something for the first time all day. Let's grab a lead going into the 9th!
   9. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:23 PM (#5678338)
Pham now 0-for-his-last-13. Last hit was on Saturday.
   10. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 03:25 PM (#5678339)
And Carpenter goes 0-for-3 with 3 K's (and a walk) after an 0-for-4 last night. Just when I thought he had turned a corner...

The Astros team ERA is 3 1/2 std deviations lower than the "rest of AL" ERA.

no holland so far, thank god. but i guess the day is young ...

Pham now 0-for-his-last-13. Last hit was on Saturday.

Mike Shannon suggested the same thing today, that I suggested the other day.. There is something wrong with Pham's vision. Of course it could just be a normal cold spell, but it does seem as if he's not getting a good look at the ball.

The Astros team ERA is 3 1/2 std deviations lower than the "rest of AL" ERA.

More than a quarter of MLB pitching staffs are averaging better than a K per inning.

Another 10 teams are between 8.5 and 8.9 K/per 9ip.

Kendall is the first one I thought of.

Doing a quick google search Drew and Sal Butera also were catchers.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot about Hundley. (other names include Hairston, Earle Brucker?, Connie Mack, Billy Sullivan, Haywood Sullivan--no relation to Billy though, John Wathan)

I know we are 4-4 in extra innings, but it feels like we always lose in extras.
   25. salvomania Posted: May 23, 2018 at 04:06 PM (#5678376)
Drew and Sal Butera also were catchers.

Speak of the devil: Drew breaks the tie with a bases-loaded single in the 10th.

poor play by the Cardinals in that rundown.

In news of the unheralded - Yankees Call Up Ryan Bollinger:
The Yankees announced today that they have selected the contract of lefty Ryan Bollinger. He will be added to the active roster for tonight’s game. . . . Bollinger will make it to the majors about nine years after he was taken in the 47th round of the 2009 draft by the Phillies. He never pitched with the Philadelphia organization, but did spend three seasons in the low minors with the White Sox beginning in 2011.

For the past three seasons, Bollinger has pitched outside of the affiliated ranks, making several indy ball stops and appearing last year in the Australian Baseball League. River Ave. Blues covered his unheralded signing, providing a video of Bollinger pitching in Germany and rightly noting: “Would be something if this guy made it, huh?” Indeed.

Since joining the Yankees organization over the offseason, Bollinger has worked as a starter in the upper minors. In 29 innings, he owns a 1.86 ERA with 6.2 K/9 against 2.2 BB/9. It seems reasonable to presume that the 27-year-old will join the Yankees’ bullpen upon his arrival.

Going to be tough for Bollinger to stick on the roster very long, considering the players coming back from injury soon, but he has a chance to open some eyes, and perhaps get more of a chance later in the year, or find other opportunities via trade. Quite a step up from 3 years without a Major League affiliation.

So far the only two outs of the Royals' three-run 10th inning have been runners nailed at home plate.

I'm just grateful that after tonight the Yankees will have only 10 more night games outside the Eastern time zone, and only 4 of them will be on the West Coast. They should make all West Coast intersectional night games start at 7:05 Eastern time.

   39. Bote Man Posted: May 23, 2018 at 07:13 PM (#5678457)
I haven't even looked, but it seems like there's a magic token that is passed to each team which then goes on a tear for a few games to a week. Then the token passes to the next team so they go on a similar streak while the previous team falls off. I wonder if there's something to that? Dbacks were unstoppable, now they can't buy a win. The Nationals bolted out to start the season with a 4-game win streak, then they floundered for a while, then opened May with a 6-game winning streak, to name just 2 teams.

It vaguely emulates a large railroad network, where one rail yard gets so congested it seems that nothing moves. Later it clears up and another rail yard becomes so congested, usw. Weird stuff. Or maybe I'm just weird.

If the Dodgers win tonight, they'll be 3 1/2 out of first. Same as fellow NL divisional favorites Nats and Cubs.

Well, this is certainly a surprise - Lenny Dykstra Arrested For Threatening Uber Driver, Drugs:
The Uber driver told the police that he picked up Dykstra in Linden, and when he refused to change the agreed-upon destination, Dykstra pulled out a gun, pointed it at his head and threatened to kill him. The man said he sped into a parking lot next to the Linden police station, honked his horn and fled the vehicle.

According to NJ.com, police did not find a gun but did find cocaine, marijuana and ecstasy and took Dykstra into custody at 3:30 a.m. ET. Dykstra took to Twitter to respond to the allegations by, among other things, citing lyrics from Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson.

"But I keep cruising, can't stop, won't stop moving. It's like I got this music in my mind, sayin' gonna be alright,'' Dykstra tweeted, referencing the Swift hit "Shake It Off.''

When one Twitter user suggested the encounter was the Uber driver's fault "for not respecting a legend,'' Dykstra responded, "I'm not sure yet that that's the defense with which we are going to go.''

Ozuna was benched by the Marlins in 2015 after showing up late for batting practice. Ozuna that day: "It was my fault. I say sorry, and it's not going to happen again."

Marlins are channeling their inner 1985 Rusty Staub, moving INF-by-trade Dietrich between LF and RF depending on the batter. Shuck is the other 'switcher.'

Bruce hit a lazy fly to Dietrich in LF, though, who botched it
