I am just saying - as a Blue Jays fan - that a team should not take a lot of pride from being able to beat the Blue Jays.

The most amazing thing about the Yankees week is that it has been a muggy, disgusting week here and they still have yet to have a game called off.

But tonight looks bad.

Trout is slugging something like .830 this month. He's had a couple of .800+ months in his career, including one when he was 20 years old!

The Angels were 7 games under .500 at one point. The Angels shouldn't be one of the worst teams in the league. Getting Ohtani and Upton back and rolling has been great, getting Harvey and Cahill and Allen out of the active roster has been great, and getting to play some struggling teams has been great.

Charlie Blackmon rebounds from his measly one-hit game yesterday by homering to lead off today's game against the D-Backs.
   10. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 20, 2019 at 04:31 PM (#5854223)
I want to fall in love with Blackmon's season, but that .245/.281/.367 road split makes me still feel like I need to give his overall performance a Coors Effect discount. (I know he's on the road today.)

Wow ... not just not everybody, looks like there are only 12 games on 4 July and then only 13 on 5 July (a Friday)

On top of that, the Nationals first pitch on July 4th is 11:05 ostensibly to allow people to get where they're going for cookouts and to watch the fireworks on the National Mall that night.

This season's schedule is whacked... about half the teams played on Memorial day also. When you make a schedule you should kinda insist that every team plays on the Monday holidays, and any other major holidays, and ensure that Toronto has a home game for Canada day.

Charlie Blackmon is playing on the road today...

But I was curious as to what his last 162 home games look like.

.374/.439/.698, 41 doubles, 18 triples, 45 HR, 106 RBI, 104 XBH

looks like there are only 12 games on 4 July

old NYC sports talk guy was griping the other day that the Mets are off on July 4.

he said every team must play on Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.

July 4 is not controversial, and I can see Labor Day as well (never mind that hundreds of stadium employees don't get the 'labor' day off).

but wouldn't a truly old-school guy say that it's disrespectful to play on Memorial Day?

After a 30 minute rain delay the Nationals are now hosting the Phillies in the 3rd and final game of this 4-game series. It's the battle of "prospects" as Erick Fedde faces off against former Nats 4th round draft pick Nick Pivetta, who shamefully and inexplicably went to Philly in exchange for noted choker Jon Papelbon.

They already have 1 TOOTBLAN a piece, but the Nats have 3 runs courtesy of an RBI double by Juan Soto to score Rendon after his own double (Soto tried to stretch it, but was thrown out at 3B) and a 2-run circuit clout by Lenn Sakata. Trea Turner made a magnificent stop of a hotshot groundball, barely keeping it in the end of his glove, then leaping up and throwing a bullet to the plate to nail Kingery 5 feet from the plate.

He'd have to be pretty damn old-old school, since BITD "Decoration Day" was when one of the season's three scheduled doubleheaders took place. 95% of the other doubleheaders before WW2 were the result of makeup games.

Maybin with a comical 39 pct Hit Percentage this year.
.307 BA, .243 xBA

.256 career BA. age 32. playing for his 9th team for a reason. they couldn't get a box of balls for him.

enjoy the memories, but he's a goner. if the Mets claim him, he'll hit .156 for them.

I don't care who's coming back, if the Yankees DFA Cameron Maybin, it's time to riot.

The Yankees can postpone a decision on Maybin for a while by doing without an ineffective reliever for a bit, but that option disappears with Severino, Betances, German, and perhaps Montgomery coming back. The other aspect is that there will be relatively few ABs available for Maybin. He’s a righhanded bat, like just about every other Yankee, so there’s no platoon advantage, and Judge, Stanton & Encarnación don’t need that many days off anyway. Maybe yet another injury will open up some playing time, but a trade may be the best option. The Yankees should be able to get considerably more than their acquisition cost after his performance.

Well, Alzolay pretty much killed it in his debut. A few balls that were hit pretty hard, but 5 K against 1 BB, and no hits allowed in 4 innings in relief. And man, he works fast.

I guess Joe could run him out there to finish off the game, but I can't imagine why. He's letting him bat in the 8th though.

I have to say, as a Cubs fan I wasn't devastated that the Cubs didn't sign Harper, and nothing's happened so far to make me think I should have been. In a way, I kind of feel bad for the guy, although I can't really say why.

He was a starting pitcher in Iowa and it's not a save situation. And with the defensive substitution in CF, we get Adbert Alzolay and Albert Almora in the game at the same time. If only Arismendy Alcantera were still around to play second base.

And as I type that, the kid's perfect debut is spoiled by Todd Frazier. Probably should have let him quit while he was ahead.

It just seemed like, why push it? The kid finished 4, they got as much as they could have possibly have hoped for from him, everything was good with the world. He just got here, let him take a few days to bask in his near-perfect outing, meet with the coaches, get used to being in a major-league clubhouse doing major-league preparation for his next outing, whenever that'll be.

And it's not a huge deal, it's not like 2 bad PA in the ninth will ruin him or anything. There was just no real upside to letting him go back out. And now you spot Cishek a run and a baserunner if he's off.

I was very surprised that Maddon brought him back out for the 9th - well, more that he let him bat in the bottom of the 8th, which kind of made it obvious that he was probably coming back out. I tend to agree with you. My weak defense of Maddon would be that I think they want him to be a starting pitcher so it was worth seeing how long he could go.

Anyway, all's well that ends well. The kid had a really nice debut and earned his first major-league win to top it off.

Cards down 2 in the 11th, battle back to score one on a double by Molina, then PR Jack Flaherty gets picked off 2nd to end it. That's his second game ending TOOTBLAN in a week, although the other was getting thrown out at the plate by 10 feet, so I blame the 3B coach for that one.

True. The risk in using a pitcher to PR is that they really don't know what they're doing out there. He took his eye off the pitcher with the infielder standing right at second base.

In fact I think that's why he took his eye off the P. The fielder standing right at the base distracted him and he kept looking over there. Romo caught him doing it and threw back there at just the right time.

"enjoy the memories, but he's a goner."

I don't generally bag on players.. and I don't really care about appearable effort (the stupid crap that everyone praises Pete Rose for and bag on Puig for.... I think that is a really dumb ass way to analyze something.) but at the same time... I do care about situational awareness... and Flaherty failed on that at all levels. He missed out on the fact that he was a pitcher pinch running and that there is a real possibility that the other team is going to take advantage of that fact... he missed out on the obvious attempt by the team to try and pick him off, and instead of hugging the base and recognizing the fact that he was a pinch runner because he wasn't slow, not because he was a good runner, was just stupid on his part.... his job was to be faster than molina on a base hit... pure and simple... those extra 5 feet he was leading off by was not important.

Shildt takes responsibility for it -- "I put him in that spot....it was the right move....The reality is he wasn't prepped well enough. I'll take responsibility for that...put him in a spot where he wasn't able to have success."

But I agree it's totally on Flaherty. Shildt protecting him is nice and all, but it's bullshit. It's 100% on Flaherty.

It's at least decent of shildt to show some type of action in the public that backs up his mythological persona that was whole handededly created by media spin telling stories without any action or direct quotes to back it up.

so if The Cardinals Way (TM) has Flaherty as their best pitcher pinch-runner as of mid-June, and he spits the bit twice in a week, that's "totally on Flaherty"?

that seems ..... odd. either the Cardinals never bothered, in 6-8 weeks of boring spring training, to work with Flaherty to make him useful in that spot - or they mistakenly thought he was capable.

or something, other than it's totally the clueless pitcher's fault. somebody dropped the ball, and it ain't just Flaherty.
