Nothing to Rollins’ benching, Sandberg claims | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

Who cares?

However, Sandberg’s there’s-nothing-to-see-here story became a little tough to believe when it became clear he was bothered by a recent comment that Rollins made in the Philadelphia Daily News.

On Monday, with the losses and the 0-fers piling up, Rollins said something to the effect that he wasn’t concerned about the way things were going because it was just spring training.

“Who cares?” he said.

The comment hit the paper Tuesday morning, the same day that Rollins was abruptly scratched from the lineup. (Sandberg said it was a simple lineup change with no connection to Rollins’ comment.) Rollins also sat Wednesday and Thursday. He will play Friday in Bradenton.

I find that handling these types of issues by using the media as your point of communication is usually the best way to go.

“He was referencing himself and where he’s at right now as far as his offensive stroke and what he’s doing on the field,” Sandberg said. “So he was speaking for himself, that he wasn’t that concerned with it being that early in the spring."

I will optimistically give the two-headed Old School team of Sandberg and Bowa until June 1 before they completely lose this clubhouse. The oldest team in the MLB with two field general types on top is a perfect recipe for disaster. At least Ruben's eventual implosion will be entirely his fault, but this is setting up to be a ****show of a season in Philly.

But maybe they need to lose the old guys? This isn't Valentine in Boston. This is a team that needs to realize it has to rebuild. I don't see why you would want a manager catering to the old guys in that situation. Maybe his dickishness gets Ryan Howard to lift his partial no-trade and they can try to see if an expanded market allows them to get a little something back.

A disgruntled Howard for 3/$75 -- sign me up! :-)

I don't now if Sandberg will lose the clubhouse or not (although having Bowa on hand makes it highly likely) but while the Phils "need" to lose the vets, they need to lose them OUT of the clubhouse, not in it.

Anyway, it's early. Sandberg didn't handle this well but he can learn. (Rollins didn't handle it particularly well either.) But if Sandberg wanted to be a hard ass to show the non-existent kids what it takes to make it in the big leagues, he needed to convince the vets of his vision.

Yes! But that's a sunk cost at this point. It would doubly foolish to decide to cater to them just because you're stuck with them.
