Not a single Blue Jay pitcher currently on the roster has as many as five wins this season (Stroman and Daniel Hudson had 6, but they gone.)

Even the Tigers have three, the Royals have three and the Orioles have two.

There have only been four Boltons in the history of baseball, and two of them - Rod and Tom - both pitched in the 1993 season!

And Michael Bolton had a triple platinum album that same year. Coincidence? I think not.

Take a good look, not likely to see this Yankees lineup ever again:

Gleyber Torres, 2B
Brett Gardner, CF
Gary Sánchez, C
Edwin Encarnación, DH
Didi Gregorius, SS
Gio Urshela, 3B
Mike Ford, 1B
Clint Frazier, LF
Tyler Wade, RF

Nestor Cortes Jr. vs Edwin Jackson.

That's a matchup for the ages ...

stat of the day/ trivia:

Of the 4 categories
team bases on balls drawn (most)
team batter strikeouts (fewest)
team bases on balls allowed (fewest)
team pitcher strikeouts (most)

which is the ONLY one that the Astros do NOT lead all 30 MLB teams in?
   11. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 10, 2019 at 06:37 PM (#5878208)
I'm pretty sure they lead in both the strikeout categories...so I'll guess they don't lead in BBs allowed.

Though I do believe they still haven't issued a single IBB all year.

Johnny Cueto makes his 2019 debut tonight for the Giants, so there's that.

What does this have to do with Frank Tanana? My room overlooks the Nenana River which flows into the Tanana River.

Mookie with another leadoff homer. He's hit 4 in the last 7 days, I think that's the 2nd or 3rd lead off homer this week.

Though the GM by committee Red Sox are now part of the also-rans I will continue to try to post as I know you all are interested in their performance until the end of the season...

   17. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: September 10, 2019 at 07:37 PM (#5878231)
Man, Gardner has been a godsend this year. 113 wRC+, with average or better D in CF. At age 35.

The Yanks OF would be in bad shape right now if they had decided to save money on him. I'm guessing he's back next year too.
   18. TomH Posted: September 10, 2019 at 07:54 PM (#5878235)
#11 is correct. The Stros are a mere 6th or so in fewest BBs allowed. he Dahdgers are blowing everyone away in that category; there really is no arm on that team you would call "wild".
   19. rconn23 Posted: September 10, 2019 at 07:55 PM (#5878236)
The Yankees seem to always play bad baseball in Detroit. Six-run lead officially gone.
   20. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: September 10, 2019 at 07:59 PM (#5878238)
A 6-run inning based on 6 singles a fielder's choice, and a Sac Fly. I don't know if I've ever seen that before. It's certainly shocking in today's game to score 6 without an extra-base hit, much less a HR.
   21. rconn23 Posted: September 10, 2019 at 08:01 PM (#5878240)
And just like that, Gleyber does Gleyber things. Makes up for a costly error and hits #36 to give the Yankees the lead again.

Eovaldi still not 100% right but battling through. Has given up 5 hits through 3 1/3rd but no BB and has 5Ks. I think the signing will be ok in end and the Sox will get the value they paid for over the next 3 years

heh, ozuna steals second w 2 out, rockies immediately call for a replay, cards broadcasters concede he's out, the replay goes up on the scoreboard, everybody leaves the field even ozuna before the umps are finished talking to new york.

A's come back nicely after getting crushed 15-0 in Houston last night: Oakland now leading 9-1 going into the bottom of the 2nd inning.

In the A's 7-run first inning, Khris Davis blasted his 20th home run of the season, and with two hits (so far) he's raised his batting average to a robust .221.
Davis will need to hit about .440 the rest of the way to preserve The Streak. #questfor247
   29. rconn23 Posted: September 10, 2019 at 09:22 PM (#5878251)
Yankees back up 11-10. Maybe Boone will actually use his top relievers now to try to win a game when they're fighting for homefield in the playoffs.

Edit: Nevermind. This game is stupid. Apparently all Yankees pitchers are content to just throw garbage tonight against a AAA lineup.
   30. Ziggy is done with Dominican discotheques Posted: September 10, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5878253)
Home runs are boring. That's the third homer in the inning. A's up by 15 in the 4th (with zero outs).
   31. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: September 10, 2019 at 09:46 PM (#5878254)
A's well and truly off the mat, drop another 6-spot on the Astros in the top of the 4th, now 17-2 with nobody out.

unable to EDIT, but: Coke, sure. Hell, I'll buy a round for whoever's left at MMP by the bottom of the 9th.

The Astros are down by 17 and it's a September game. Why are any of the regulars still playing? Surely the call ups could use some reps in a game that doesn't matter any more.

First 7 runs all scored on singles.
Next 11 runs all scored on homers (5 two-run shots, and a solo).
Last 1 (and counting) on a double.

Mets win
Phillies win
moments apart

Mets lead 3-2 in 9th, leadoff man on, a bizarrely hit knuckler to Polar Bear Alonso at first base. he leaps ()! to grab the ball, but this is an unintentional sacrifice to 2nd base.

next is a soft liner that the Bear nearly pounces on, but not quite. leaves the Dback runner at first "in jail," so the Bear scrambles to get the batter at first and now only has to toss to second to get the runner into a game-ending rundown.

instead - an ironic brain freeze by a Polar Bear - Alonso throws to 3rd, no dice. then Frazier a high throw back to second, and the Dbacks survive.

and here comes ex-Mets icon Wil Flores, who lives for the big spot. and he whiffs on Justin Wilson's 34th pitch!

good stuff
   38. rconn23 Posted: September 10, 2019 at 10:16 PM (#5878262)
What a terribly played game and horrible management by Boone. Chance Adams has no place on even an expanded roster.
   39. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 10, 2019 at 10:16 PM (#5878263)
Can someone explain Boone's thought process? The Yankees had a golden opportunity to go a game ahead of the Astros, and the only real reliever he allows in the game was Britton. Why wouldn't he go with Kahnle, Britton and Chapman once they got the lead in the top of the 7th?
   40. rconn23 Posted: September 10, 2019 at 10:24 PM (#5878264)
"Can someone explain Boone's thought process?"

No one can rationally explain Boone's thought process. It's the same rationale that will cause him to bat the team's least selective hitter -Didi- in the 3-spot in the playoffs. The Yankees have a real shot to win the WS if they didn't have Boone as a manager.

Kahnle was unavailable due to “wrist tendinitis”, but Britton pitched an inning, as did Ottavino.

5 runs won't win this one.

2 nights in a row Zo airmails an inning ending dp that leads to runs, more today. Q really had awful luck that inning, and his ERA too an undeserved hit.

I know it's only the Pirates, but Cueto with 5 scoreless so far, allowed only 1 hit (by Kramer, not Newman) and 1 BB and 4 K.

he used to be pretty pretty good.

Very much agreed. In the 1912 WS, it took less than 18 hours to play all 8 games - and two of those were extra innings.

Meanwhile in 2019, A's up 21-5 in the bottom of the 9th.

Juiced-ball dinger for Bryant on a low and outside curveball. He was already entirely on his front foot when he made contact and just flipped it into the left-field seats. Long arms (and juiced ball) FTW.

It's funny, I'm not sure I've actually seen Good Chatwood with my own eyes until tonight. The few times I remember him pitching memorably well I've been listening on the radio. Watching him on a good night, you can see what got him signed in the first place. I wonder if there is some sort of "one time through the order" role that they could craft for him where he could succeed.
   58. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 11, 2019 at 12:21 AM (#5878295)

After pickoff throws, the first-base coach pretty much always says something to the runner, presumably about the pitcher's move or strategy. How does the first baseman not overhear that and report back to the pitcher?
