NWI: Castle: Fukudome belongs at No. 2 as sparkplug

Whereas a worn out sparkplug not only wastes fuel but also strains the whole Cub ignition system!

Such skills are beyond the ability or discipline of present No. 2 hitter Alfonso Soriano.

On Monday, Soriano struck out twice, flied to right and slapped a weak grounder to first. Brewers ace Ben Sheets had something to do with that feeble output. But with 32 more home games being played in the cold-weather months of April and May, the Cubs need every element of “small ball” at their disposal to play under the winds and eke out low-run victories. They need to get off to a good start and pile up victories to counterbalance the inevitable pratfalls on dog-day road trips.

I don’t think Soriano is a $136 million bust. He’s simply a slugger who through various incarnations and his ability to run when younger convinced himself he was a top-of-the-order hitter.

Players must inevitably change for their team’s overall good. Soriano is unwilling or unable to adapt to situations. Fukudome is. Get him as many at-bats as far up as possible—now.

Well I learned something new from this article, really.

Tell the truth, how many of you out there knew that there was a Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times Newspaper?

"You said she was a real sparkplug."

"No, I said buttplug. She's heinous."

The two men's performances in one game do nothing to demonstrate their relative capabilities; you can be sure there will be many days where Soriano goes 3-for-5 with a double, a bomb, a stolen base and 4 RBI while Fukudome goes 0-for-4.

Castle is obviously right though. Actually, Fukudome really should be the Cubs' leadoff hitter.

Bat Soriano leadoff to keep him happy, Fukudome #2, and The Riot #8.

I agree with Justin that Fukudome #1 and Soriano #2 would be better, but I just want Soriano to be happy and perform.

If Fukudome continues to perform well, he won't stay in the 5 hole. Whether that means he goes to the top 2 where he belongs, who knows.

Can I just say that the awesomeness and fun-ness of Fukudome's debut almost offset the disappointment of the loss? Damn, that was a blast.

There isn't. There's a Times of Northwest Indiana. It also covers parts of south suburban Chicago (It may fly some Illinois Times banner, but it's merely a zoned edition of the Times of NW Indiana).

And it was never located in Gary. That's the Post-Tribune, which is now located in nearby Merrillville.

George Castle and his pedantic writing make my brain hurt.
