NY Daily News: Eduardo Nunez taking over for Derek Jeter at short stop is part of future plan

But first, they’ll trade for Hanley Ramirez…

No, the real deal-breaking prospect, as far as the Yankees were concerned, was infielder Eduardo Nunez. Yankee GM Brian Cashman was willing to sacrifice Montero - despite all the scouts’ raves about his power potential - because he has a surplus of catchers. Nunez, on the other hand, is viewed by Cashman as a big part of the Yankee future which is why, when Mariners’ GM Jack Zduriencik asked for his inclusion in the deal as a substitute for injured second-base prospect David Adams, the Yankee GM essentially said: “Enough!” Turns out Zduriencik was right about Adams being potentially damaged goods - the hard-hitting second baseman never came back from the severely broken ankle he suffered at Double-A Trenton and then underwent additional surgery after the season, precluding him from making up for all the lost time in winter ball – but in asking for Nunez he was asking for the player the Yankees are now viewing as Derek Jeter’s successor. Though no one in the Yankee high command is ever going to even speculate about the future after 2011 - especially with the very sensitive contract negotiations with Jeter about to get underway – but it’s becoming increasingly clear the plan is to phase out Jorge Posada next season when his contract expires, opening up the DH slot for Alex Rodriguez, thereby allowing Jeter to move to third, making room for a more athletic shortstop, which would be the 24-year-old Venezuelan, Nunez, who hit .289 with 50 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 118 games at Triple-A Scranton this season.

So what’s the deal with Nunez? Is he the real deal? Here’s what a couple of scouts had to say about him - and Montero.

“Nunez is your consummate ‘tools’ guy,” said the first scout. “He’s got a plus arm, he can hit, has some pop and can run. He has a tendency, however, to get lackadaisical in the field and he needs to learn not to chase so many pitches.”

“Do I think Nunez can be a ‘plus’ major league shortstop?” asked the other scout. “Yes, but he’s still got a lot to learn. The ability’s there. Will he perform to it? I don’t know. I’m just not sure about the makeup. (Robinson) Cano was the same way when he was that age, and he grew up. It says a lot for Nunez that he batted third most of the season at Triple-A. He hit a lot of mistakes which he won’t see that much of in the majors.”

Avoid running at all times.-S. Paige Posted: October 31, 2010 at 05:05 AM | 19 comment(s) Login to Bookmark

I don't think it's a given that Jeter can be better defensively at 3B than A-Rod, and nor do I think it's a good idea to not have power at the corner infield spots.

I haven't paid much attention to baseball this year, but this sounds a lot like "Bubba Crosby is our centerfielder".

There's a strong possibility that Jeter will be much worse than Rodriguez at 3B, given that he's older and has always been much worse than Rodriguez was at SS.

Just having Nunez on the roster, though, might save the Yankees several million. At least he's a plausible lie to bring to the table when negotiating with Jeter.

Or "Chuck Knoblach is our leftfielder".

A .721 OPS in AAA becomes .620-.640 or so in the majors (ML Splits is down). Whoopee.

Of course, (a) Nunez could improve, he is only 23 (b) the average OPS for an AL shortstop last year was .669, so if Nunez is a plus defensive player, he could actually be an asset there, even with that batting line.

"so if Nunez is a plus defensive player,"

The problem is, he's not a plus defender, at least not yet.

He's 23?! Yeesh, I had figured he'd be 20 or 21. At 23 his numbers seem pretty underwhelming.

This seems like BS. ARod is in all likelihood a much better 3B than Jeter, and will be for the next 3 years.

Plus, you need DH open for Montero if he can't hack C, or if Romine or Sanchez comes on strong.

I'm starting to hope Jeter is an intransigent bastard, ask for 4 years of ARod money, and the Yankees let him go.

ARod has not looked too good to me recently. He looks slow and creaky. I don't know if he's better than Jeter anymore - I think I'd rather have Jeter playing shortstop.

ARod was the superior defender when he was 28, sure, but I think it's time we updated our scouting reports.

Even if A-Rod is a better defender, the best way to use him may be to spare him wear and tear by plenty of DH time.

You know, a Derek Jeter-less Yankees is not the end of the world.

Sure, they should go get Beltre if they want A-Rod off 3B.

EDIT: On the other hand, are we sure the cataclysms prophecied for 2012 wouldn't be triggered by Jeter leaving? Better give him a five-year deal to be on the safe side.

Oh, I agree he should get ~40 games a year at DH, and limit him to ~110 Gs at 3B.

But, I think it's too soon to be thinking of him as a full time DH. In any case, they need DH for Posada/Montero this year.

You know, a Derek Jeter-less Yankees is not the end of the world.

As a Yankee fan, I heartily concur. I'm actually starting to hope it happens this year.

I wonder if this is a potential "Of course Bubba Crosby is an adequate center field option (Johnny, sign here)" feint.

The big problem with that thought is that I don't know of any freely-available shortstops that could step in.

Juan Uribe, Jhonny Peralta, and Edgar Renteria are all FA's, and none of them was any worse than Jeter this year.

SHUT UP!! (standard Jeter article response)

Is there a reason you do this in every Jeter thread? It's not funny and just plain stupid and annoying.
