N.Y. Daily News: Harper: Mike Mussina clean, but not angry

Mike Mussina, roids, the HOF…and boy, Harper’s bizarre. Astonish me, indeed.

You’d think Mike Mussina would be angry, full of resentment for the steroid users, big names and small, teammates and opponents. In some ways he is the quintessential example of a player who paid a price for pitching in the steroids era while resisting the temptation to take the plunge himself.

Over 17 seasons, Mussina has won 250 games and been an elite pitcher. He falls short on the Hall of Fame scale, but not by much, and, who knows how much closer he’d be to the magic number of 300 wins if the game had been clean throughout his career.

...But what about the possibility the users cost him a spot in the Hall of Fame?

“What would the difference have been?” Mussina asked. “A couple of games here or there? Who knows? And, if it changed the way other guys performed, it wouldn’t change the criteria of what it takes to go to the Hall of Fame.

“So I’m not upset about that. It doesn’t change the way I look at what I’ve been able to do. If I get a chance to go, great, if not, I’m not disappointed in anything. I’m glad I had the opportunity.”

I think he might have a point. Guys like McGwire and Palmeiro who are borderline HOFers are getting their chances lowered because of a strong suspicion of steriod abuse. Should another borderline HOFer like Mussina get their chances boosted because of a a strong suspicion that they didn't use steriods?
Discuss.

Moose definitely is running lpow on gas but there are times when he really pitches well. He has enough in his tank to win 50 more games. If he gets close, he should get consideration for staying clean all these years.

I can't see Mussina getting to 300 without a nice return to form and a trip to the NL where he might be a viable pitcher for an extra year or 2. I could see 15ish wins this year with the Yankees if all goes the best it reasonably could. Maybe that could get him reupped for a year and another 10-15 wins. He would be 41 then and still need 20-25 more wins... possible but highly unlikely imo.

If Mussina had been willing to participate in conventional weight training over the last several offseasons, as the Yankees have requested, he may have been able to gain a couple of miles on his fastball and pick up 10 or more wins.

OK, so Pedro's clean and angry, Mussina's clean but not angry. Where are the old men who know where they are and care, but don't drink?

Harper's Bizarre, huh? I was just listening to them today. Transferred me right back to the 60's.
