MLB receives Mitchell Report

Cripes! 60-80 names to be mentioned…that’s an awful lot of pitchers.

Major League Baseball officials are reviewing George Mitchell’s long-anticipated steroid report at the former Senate majority leader’s law offices, 21 months after commissioner Bud Selig asked Mitchell to investigate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.

Officials arrived at Mitchell’s Manhattan office Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic, and began what is believed to be a 48-hour review period before Mitchell releases the report on Thursday. The report is believed to contain the names of 60-80 former and current players, according to sources, and is based in large part on information provided to Mitchell by former clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski.

Radomski is the only significant source?!?!?

Let's see...when was he with the Mets...
1985-95. There were well over 60-80 players on the Mets during that time. Joe Orsulak, Jeff Innis, Mackey Sasser, Ron Darling, Rafael Santana, Mark Carreon, Wally Whitehurst, Daryl Boston, Terry Leach, NONE of you guys are getting into the Hall of Fame!

Will the majority of the players outed be Mets? Did the Yankees fund this investigation? Is this even legal?

I'm going to stick to Diamondbacks or ex-Diamondbacks that haven't already been named somewhere.

1. Luis Gonzalez
2. Tony Clark
3. Steve Finley
4. Jay Bell
5. Danny Bautista
6. Richie Sexson
7. Royce Clayton
8. Luis Terrero
9. Craig Counsell (just for fun)

What I don't understand is this: If the powers that be really wanted everyone to take this seriously, why in the world would Selig appoint someone who is in a position to have a potential conflict of interest? No matter what the report says, there's going to be some group of people who will ALWAYS be able to bring up the fact that Mitchell has a conflict of interest, and therefore some or all of the findings are invalid.

Why should I believe this any more than the Blue Ribbon Economic Report?

5 years ago I came up with my top 2 "likely" roids users.

#1) Melvin Mora
#2) Doug Mientkiewicz

The "eye-ball test" is over used in this art of roids speculation. Ray Buchannon CB in the NFL, was likely the smallest football player in the league, yet he was busted for roids.

Looking forward to watching Mora fans suffer!

I'm getting a bit bothered by this "named in the report" meme. I know the media is going to go through the thing and identify every player whose name appears in it, regardless of whether they are severely implicated or just the subject of a vague rumor or even mentioned in a neutral way. Vague suspicion based on nothing can be funny, but vague suspicion based on a tiny shred of truth that gets twisted is a concern.
   42. Shooty: Applying to be Fearless Leader Posted: December 12, 2007 at 02:39 AM (#2641942)
There are 60-80 names in the report. My guess is most of the names are guys no longer playing and most are players no one gives a #### about. I just don't think this is going to be the gossip goldmine a lot of people are hoping for. Sorry guys! Of course, if you vote Shooty in 2008, everyone will be a 'roider!

Ok, seriously, a NFL team doctor was caught ordering a distributing roids to players and nothing much came of it. 60-minutes did an expose on NFL PEDs. 10-12 NFL players were named in the BALCO investigation just like baseball. In fact, Elway and Marino were both implicated in PED use. The entire Steelers team, Panthers and mid-late 90's Broncos have been found to have adopted PEDs that have been banned.

Am I wasting my breath?

Remember when William the "Fridge" Perry was 290 and we were all amazed? Now a guy will go undrafted if he is under 290.

Cal Ripken, if on the list, is possibly the one person who would bring the whole damn sport down if his name was released. He isn't on the list. I hope. (Although I wouldn't be surprised if he used Greenies every at one point or another, and that's coming from a guy who went to Cooperstown to see him inducted.)

I have found that the random page button of B-Ref is a perfect thing to figure out who's on the list.

Pat Duff, Ray Barker, Jackie Sullivan, Francisco Oliveras and John Newell thought they could hide forever. But Mitchell has no doubt found the terrible truth. And if I was Mike Kume, I wouldn't feel safe either. NOBODY is safe, not even Harry Moore!

Edgardo Alfonzo

I always thought he was that gay NY baseball player. Remember that story?
   77. MSI Posted: December 12, 2007 at 04:27 AM (#2642051)
Jeff Bagwell, Miguel Tejada, Jim Thome, Jeff Kent, Richie Sexson, Hank Blalock, The Yankees, Gabe Kapler, Jim Edmonds...

and to the list of unbelieveables, don't forget Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey Jr., and John Smoltz.

Also, remember that there will probably be more pitchers than expected...and that 60 to 80 players is about 2 to 3 players for each team, on average.

Have you folks learned nothing from recent threads? Here are my 5:

1. Alex Gonzalez
2. Ryan Braun
3. Steve Ontiveros
4. Jeff D'Amico
5. Bobby Jones
   82. Kiko Sakata Posted: December 12, 2007 at 04:38 AM (#2642065)
my 5 guesses:

Paul Molitor
Ben McDonald
Kerry Wood
Kyle Farnsworth
Sammy Sosa

If the last one's too obvious, I'll go with John Valentin.

Believe it or not, there's a very slight method to my madness.

I could see Molitor.

Yet another Selig Brewer and HOF. That would have a huge impact. No doubt his name is being scrubbed from the list as we speak--if it were true. Yet, Selig and Molitor never cared much for eachother, Yount was Selig's fav Brewer.

I am curious what, if any, impact there would be on future HOF voting if somebody who's already in the Hall is found to have used steroids. Personally, I think it's pretty likely that somebody in the Hall of Fame used steroids, although I think it's much less likely that we'll ever find out for sure.

"J.D. Drew"

I would be very surprised if he named any Red Sox players.

Aw, what the hell:

Rich Aurilia
Scott Spiezio
Kevin Brown
Trot Nixon
Mike Sweeney
   88. Crispix Attacks Posted: December 12, 2007 at 04:51 AM (#2642085)
I thought Spiezio had already been implicated. Maybe that was for recreational drugs.
   89. Posada Posse Posted: December 12, 2007 at 04:57 AM (#2642094)
Spiezio went to rehab last season for recreational drugs, but I've never heard him be implicated with steroids before. I could be wrong though.
   90. zoobird Posted: December 12, 2007 at 04:57 AM (#2642096)
Pat Burrell
Marcus Giles
Ricky Henderson
Jeff Kent
Luis Gonzalez

I'm blanking on the name of one guy I wanted to include. Middle reliever on the Mets and bunch of other teams. Pretty good for a while. I think his first name was Dennis.

Cook.
   92. Kiko Sakata Posted: December 12, 2007 at 05:00 AM (#2642107)
I'm not really sure why, but I think finding out that Rickey Henderson used 'roids would probably upset me more than anyone else.

It's hard to make the majors when you're under 4 feet tall any other way.
   94. zoobird Posted: December 12, 2007 at 05:03 AM (#2642112)
Robinred - Thanks! That's him. I'll count him in my five instead of Burrell.
   95. Neil Kinnock...Lord Palmerston! (Orinoco) Posted: December 12, 2007 at 05:09 AM (#2642114)
If you want Dennis Cook, might as well put Turk Wendell in too.
   96. zoobird Posted: December 12, 2007 at 05:11 AM (#2642115)
95 - Haha...I actually thought of Wendell first, but decided Cook was slightly more likely.

Plus Guillermo Mota and Scot Schoeneweis, but they probably don't count since they've already been suspended/named.
