NY Daily News: Price: Bad Ollie, very bad Ollie

Oliver The Eighth

Fifth Day.

Speaking of signs (this one of the bad variety), I nearly cringed this morning while listening to Omar Minaya on the FAN with Carton and Boomer. When asked about Pelfrey, Maine and Ollie, Omar said he felt good about them because “they take the ball.”

That’s right, our GM was putting stock in the fact that these guys will take the ball every fifth day. 3 guys who combined for 60 starts last year (Pelf had 31 of them) are now going to pitch well because they will be out there every fifth day. Unreal.

As I type this, Ollie Perez is getting lit up by the Cards. I guess if he only lasts 2 innings, he will be ready to go again in four days.

Anyway, back to our results-challenged trio. Yes, health is a factor, and if they all make 30 starts, that’s great, but if they can’t get anyone out or can’t go more than 5-6 innings a game, do we really want them making 30 starts? It baffles me how everyone, from Manuel to Warthen to the pitchers themselves have pretty much brushed off their miserable spring numbers. Well, the numbers count starting next week kids, they better get their acts together, quick.

He also likes Matthews Jr. because he takes the bat every plate appearance.

I think if they let Perez do his thing he'll be OK. He must be terribly frustrating to watch start to start because he goes through stretches were he is helpless but I think if they let him make his 30 starts he'll wind up league average or thereabouts. Yeah, there will be the occassional 2 8 7 7 4 0 line but I think the overall will be OK.

Washburn is still out there. It's not too late to try and snatch him up.

Oliver Perez is good because he helps a team outperform its Pythag! :)

200 innings of league average pitching is nothing to sneeze at. Provided it actually is league average. Granted, it's not sexy to say a pitcher can answer the bell every five days, but it's not worthless.

I don't think any Met fans is sneezing at that; more the implication that Maine and Perez will be able to give it to them.

I'm fairly confident Pelfrey can give them 32-33 starts at something resembling league average performance. (As close to confident as you can be that a SP won't get injured; Pelfrey has been very durable for the Mets) I think Maine will likely be above league average, but not ridiculously so, in closer to 15-20 starts. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from Ollie.
