N.Y. Daily News: Mets interested in Freddy Garcia

Its a thing to do, fans will laugh at you
So do the Freddy

The Mets tried to trade for Freddy Garcia last December, but the Phillies made a better offer and got the hulking righty from the White Sox.

The Mets, though, remained interested, and now that Garcia is a free agent, they’ve called his representative several times to discuss signing him. Garcia, 32, is rehabbing from shoulder surgery on his labrum and rotator cuff and should be ready to pitch by midseason, perhaps as early as June.

“The Mets have shown considerable interest in him, and some other teams, too,” said Peter Greenberg, Garcia’s agent. “Omar (Minaya, the Mets’ GM) has called several times. Omar likes him. The Mets were one of the top contenders when the Phillies got him.”

Garcia is not a bad bet on a Lieber-like deal (though I haven't checked if he's an A or B level FA, which would affect the previous statement).

Garcia is a B level FA, so the Mets wouldn't lose a pick. The Phillies would get a sandwich round pick.

Yup, keep blocking Pelfrey, Humber, et al with this kind of guy. Yuk.

I don't think this deal is about blocking the younger players as much as it is about supplementing the older players. Glavine gave them 200 innings last season, and I don't see a pitcher on their roster who can do that. Garcia should be available at about the halfway mark of the season. The Mets, hopefully, should get decent production from Martinez and Hernandez for half a season. However, it is very likely that they will have to miss some starts due to their age/injury history. Yes, the Mets could call up some guy from AAA to spot start, but Garcia has the potential to outperform the minor league pitcher. Garcia would allow the Mets to rest their veteran pitchers while having a very capable pitcher take their place. It may not be the most efficient use of money, but the Mets don't really care about that.
