N.Y. Post: BOSS JR. FIRES A SPITBALL AT ‘INGRATE’ JOE (RR)

Flashing some of his father’s famous feistiness, Hank Steinbrenner fired back yesterday after hearing Joe Torre say he was insulted by the team’s offer to manage the Yankees for a 13th season.

“Where was Joe’s career in ‘95 when my dad hired him?” said the new Boss. “My dad was crucified for hiring him.

“Let’s not forget what my dad did in giving him that opportunity - and the great team he was handed,” Steinbrenner told The Post by phone from Tampa, Fla.

...“You can’t take credit for success when you’re going good, and then not take at least some of the blame when things change,” Steinbrenner said. “I’m sorry he feels insulted, but that was not the intent.”

I love how this logic works.

The contract was offered as a way of blaming Torre for the playoff losses. But it wasn't an insult. It was just an honest assessment of his failure, in contract form.

Yeah, can't imagine why anyone would ever take offense at that.

(I will note that Repoz is correct, and there's some awesome Murdochian journamalism going on here. The word "ingrate" appears in quotes in the headline, but Hank is never quoted as using that word. That's some serious hackery.)

In his press conference, Torre was very clear to thank the Yankees and the owner for that opportunity.

Owners such as Steinbrenner takes the responsibility for the Yankees recent "failures". Managers such as Torre takes the blame.

As 1970s comedian David Frye said on an album about Watergate as he imitated Richard Nixon: "I take full responsibility. But not the blame. Let me, let me explain the difference. People who are to blame lose their jobs. People who are responsible do not."

Look at the bright side, Joe. At least the Steinbrenners are not asking your brother Frank to return the heart the Yankee job was able to get him in 1996. Yet.

Hank and Hal should just shut up. Nobody likes heirs to sports or newspaper franchises when they first came on. They have no rapport or credibility with the fans right now. Any quotes just prolong the Torre story without any benefits to their family or the team.

The Yankees are united on Alex Rodriguez, he said, but they won't offer him a new contract should the slugging third baseman opt out of his current deal. "Obviously, we'd love to keep him," said Steinbrenner. "But if he opts out, goodbye."

Apparently the word "tact" is not in the Steinbrenner dictionary.

Suppose the "Young Elephants" as Vater Steinbrenner calls Hank and Hal turn out to be just like him in stereo for the next 35 years? "The Post" and the "Daily Trash with Mike Lupica" will have to publish a morning and an evening edition to keep up. Is the youngelephant.com website available to set up a 24/7 video feed to broadcast these guys?

you think it is more manly or whatever to pretend you got no ancestors of the man persuasion?

you use the word "father" in a public statement to talk about someone you gave you half your dna who you got zero emotional connection to. it is like saying - the former owner/ceo/whatever

when you say dad (or mah daddy, like we do here) it shows both love and respect.

you don't just say some guy or the former owner or EVEN "my father" let alone be careful not to even mention him and pretend he don't exist. THAT is rude and disrespectful

and it is no wonder that males are so disrespected as parents in this society. look at YOU guys and YOUR attitude

I'd like to point out, given all the repeated media references to "Young Elephants" and "kids," that Hank Steinbrenner is FIFTY YEARS OLD. His brother is in his late 30s.

It was George himself who used the phrase "Young Elephants" in the interview to Ian O'Connor during the ALDS. I wonder if he done this in the 1960s when he was raising money for the Democratic party if he would referred to Hank and Hal as the "Young Jackasses".

He could've just said "we" and been correct. Love doesn't need to enter into a situation like this.

I suppose being the son of George could well make one insecure.
