N.Y. Post: DEREK DEFENDS ROGER (RR)

Not according to Dewan’s Plus/Minus system…

Derek Jeter wants everybody to wait until all the facts are in before declaring Roger Clemens guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs.

“It seems right now people are rushing to judgment,” Jeter said of his pal, whose name headlined the Mitchell Report last week thanks to the testimony of former personal trainer Brian McNamee. “You have to let it play out a little bit before you say he is guilty or not guilty.”

I think this means Jeter's on 'roids too.

I think this is just another example of his painfully slow reactions. Another weak grounder up the middle.

wait until the facts are in? what kind of nonsense is that? we all know that being accused = guilty

and any ballplayer who says that clemens might could deserve the benefit of the doubt must be shooting up along with da rogah

And yet he had no kind words for ARod when he was up a creek. Of course, Rajah is a True Yankee.

Well, naturally. Roger waddled on board to try and get a ring and got carried to two by his teammates. Alex got on board, played better than anyone else but the team was weaker and couldn't win it all. Naturally Cap'n Jetes! feels more positively toward the former.

Are you serious? Jeter and A-rod hang out all the time during every game. Trying to interpret any sort of riff between the two because Jeter didn't come out against A-rod's boos (or Mo's or his own) but did speak out for his teammates facing steroids issues (Giambi and Roger) is pretty weak.

I don't know, even though I wouldn't go so far as to say Jeter hates ARod (because none of us know them), I do think it's weird that he didn't defend ARod but has jumped to the defense of other teammates. I don't know why.

And it's "rift"--they're not playing guitar together. :)

I am still amazed that A-Rod re-upped to play in NY. He deserves whatever crap he gets from the fans, the media and his teammates from now on. It was one thing to go there the first time, hoping things would work out. Now he knows what kind of insane asylum it is -- and he went back to it.

I will never feel even the slightest pang of sympathy for him again when he catches crap for no good reason. Not that I felt much in the first place for the $252 Million Dollar Man (Is he now the $275 Million Dollar Man?).

Well said, Srul. On the other hand, maybe this means that all the bashing of him for not winning championships really doesn't bother him.

Did you know that Alex Rodriguez routinely participates in such exploits as cashing paychecks in single dollars, only to burn the pile of bills?

I picture him like Krusty. Eating condor egg omelets and lighting cigars with $100 bills and pearl necklaces.

The only proper historical analogy for this brouhaha is the dustup involving Dean Acheson (Jeter), Alger Hiss (Clemens), Whittaker Chambers (McNamee) and Richard Nixon (Mitchell), the details of which should be common knowledge to this erudite crowd. And what is past is prologue.

Is Bonds Kim Philby?

The issues with Giambi and Clemens are much different. Giambi had a tumor and steroids issues. Clemens has a tremendous legacy that is under serious fire due to steroids allegations. A-rod got booed for a couple months. These are not the same issues, and not surprisingly, the captain of the team has not reacted to them as if they were.

ARod has money, but he doesn't have Krusty money.

Philby was a cold, cold man ... the first time I read about him I was literally frightened that someone could get that far down in the dirt, whatever their ideology.

Exactly. If you watch Jeter & A-Rod during stretching and warmups, they're usually together yakking away pleasantly. They get along fine as teammates. It's a bigger story if there's a rift, so some of the press goes out of the way to suggest that is the case.

Didn't A-Rod say just last year that their relationship wasn't that close. They may very well get along fine as teammates, and it's quite possible the relationship improved in 2007 where they were hanging out every game, but I'd hardly call this entirely media-created (especially since the discussion centers around an event that happened before 2007).

And I agree wholeheartedly with Srul. I wanted A-Rod to sign elsewhere in the offseason, but once he came back, I figure he's earned whatever crap he takes going forward.
