NY Post: Jeter, A-Rod To Start In All-Star Game

The Post has learned the identity of every All-Star Game vote winner from the AL and NL for the July 15 game at Yankee Stadium and the starting pitchers.

Major League Baseball will announce tomorrow that Derek Jeter Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez Alex Rodriguez will start for the AL club at short and third, respectively, and that there are no Mets New York Mets among the NL starters. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will be named with the other pitchers and reserves. The plan is for Rivera to pitch the final All-Star inning in Yankee Stadium history.

Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb will start for the NL and Cleveland lefty Cliff Lee goes for the AL.

Is it a recent trend for them to make preliminary announcements about the starters? If not, this seems like an article in which the "source" is actually just someone taking the previously announced results and applying a bit of common sense extrapolation to them.

What happens if he blows a save and the game goes extra? Or if the NL is leading and the AL ties it in the 9th?

Is this whole plan just designed with the assumption that the AL will win in a walk?

I'm hoping he gives up four runs in a third of an inning, but Francona doesn't pull him just so that the Yankee fans can have their memorable Yankee Stadium moment.

That would provide nice symmetry, since in the other All-Star game at this Yankee stadium, Sparky Lyle gave up the eventual winning runs in the 8th inning.

I foresee a great number of Rays and Rangers on the "snubbed" lists that will appear instantly after the roster announcement tomorrow. Though I could be wrong.

It helps that Petunia is winning the fan voting, so Francona can't add him to the roster in addition to some other 2B and therefore keep Kinsler out. but we shall see.

I was thinking today. What if there's like a 4-day rainstorm over the scheduled days? Is the game just canceled? That kind of rain really isn't out of the question at all in July in New York.

I hate everything about the All-Star Game now, especially the fan voting. They got half of the starting line-ups wrong, if this list is at all accurate (that's not the real Ken R. by the way...).

Volquez should get the nod by a hair over Lincecum and Lee is rightfully starting for the AL.

He will pitch until the game ends whether it kills him or not.

Um, Kinsler is a close second to Pedroia in the voting. So, if Pedroia weren't winning...it would presumably be Kinsler. How is that helpful?

If I were Francona, I'd get Rivera up in the pen warming up starting in about the 7th, and just let him warm up until the 9th, then bring in a Sox pitcher to finish the game without Rivera ever actually taking the mound.

About 6 weeks into the season, I had Pedroia and Kinsler on my roster. I was alternating using them in a haphazard fashion, so I decided to deal one of them to get help at another position.

I dealt Kinsler. For the next month, I was dying every time I looked at the box scores as Kinsler was going nuts with the bat while Pedroia was just doing "okay". I'm glad to see that Pedroia is finally putting together a string of games to make me feel just a LITTLE bit better about the deal.

It would be good for Francona to pull a Gaston - have the home team player warming while one of his own pitchers ends the game.

Of course, that is part of why Mussina is a 4 letter word in Toronto (he decided to warm on his own in the 9th despite knowing he wasn't going to come in).

I didn't realize anything like my suggestion has ever actually happened before in the ASG. That makes me smile, though I'd much rather see Yankees fans get pissed than anyone else.

Ichiro probably should not be starting over Milton Bradley, Youkilis may not deserve the nod over Morneau, Griffey's numbers obviously don't warrant his inclusion, but I think Pedroia is very far off of Kinsler and lacks the lifetime achievement quality of the Griffey and Ichiro selections. I don't care about the Rangers or Kinsler, but that would be my first edit.
