NY Times: Former Met Keith Hernandez Shaves His Mustache for Charity

Pay for Mister Gray

The impetus for the public depilation was what Mr. Hernandez, now a Mets broadcaster, said “was a flippant remark on the air” raising the prospect of shaving his mustache for charity. The event raised $10,000 (contributed by the Schick razor company) for a Brooklyn day care center for Alzheimer’s patients named in honor of Mr. Hernandez’s mother, Jacquelyn, who died of the disease in 1989.

Coming up in November: Mo-vember, a worldwide event in which people grow facial hair and solicit donations for men's health (e.g., prostate cancer research). It can be fun with the right group, and you get to look grungy for a whole month.

Full disclosure principles require me to add that there is a related "Have Sex with a Guy with a Mustache Day."

Now he looks like the guy in the lobby who tries to sell me newspaper subscriptions.

“He should keep it,” said Marsha Landar, 54, a retired real estate broker from Queens Village, Queens. “My second husband looked like Keith Hernandez. That’s why I married him. I wouldn’t let him shave his mustache. C’mon, it’s sexy.”

As someone with a mustache, I am mourning the loss of Keith's. It was truly great.

He looks awful without the mustache. Eek.

You gotta give him a chance to tan the under-mustache skin.

He can do what he wants. *HE'S* Keith Hernandez.

I can honestly say that I would not recognize a demustachioed Keith Hernandez on the street.

It's like Trebek losing his mustache, just doesn't seem right.

I did this last year. I will not be doing it again. I looked like someone who should be hanging out with Jerry Sandusky.

What is the "Mo" part of Mo-vember?

Well, at least now people won't mistake him for Tony Orlando.
