N.Y. Times: Posada Likely Headed for Disabled List (RR)

The Yankees’ injury troubles took another discouraging turn Sunday when Jorge Posada was a late scratch from the lineup with a recurrence of the shoulder problem that bothered him early this month. This time, the injury seems serious.

The Yankees said there would be no announcement until after the game, but Posada, who has a tear in his subscapularis muscle, is expected to visit Dr. James Andrews and will most likely be placed on the disabled list.

Posada has already shared his magnetic resonance imaging results with Andrews, and Posada has said that surgery would not be necessary. But the problem has not improved as Posada hoped, again raising the specter of an operation.

Posada re-injured himself trying to throw a runner out yesterday. I don't think the umpires noticed it, but on the replay Posada clearly winced immediately after making the throw.

The Yankees will have one of their doctors examine Posada, likely on Tuesday. Then he will go see Dr. James Andrews on his own. It was Andrews who repaired his torn labrum in 2001.

There is little chance of that. If you listen to the emotion in Posada’s voice or saw him talk on YES, you know this is a serious matter. Surgery is a possibility. This could be a serious blow to the Yankees. Hopefully, for Posada’s sake, it’s not.

How long would an operation keep Posada out? Would they need to trade for someone, or could they work with a Molina behind the plate?

Catchers I would guess are available: Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, Corky Miller, Humberto Quintero, Paul LoDuca? Johnny Estrada? Ronny Paulino? Brad Ausmus? (feel the veteran presence)

The Yankees' young pitching strategy is obviously not working out and has to be sacrificed for the more pressing short-term needs. Ian Kennedy for Ramon Hernandez and Steve Trachsel would be a good move.

Robby Hammock should be available for the right price. He once caught a perfect game! Basically, he's the only guy qualified to replace Posada other than Pudge.

I'm pretty certain the Yankees are going to go with Molina, and if they're looking for anything, it's a backup catcher.

Offensive catchers are too rare a commodity to look for a replacement. Suck it up and go with what you got.

Quality arm in terms of strength and accuracy. Once threw out Grady Sizemore trying to steal second twice in one game -- with knuckleballing Charlie Haeger on the mound for one of them.

Thanks Pastor. I've got his average projection at .248/.300/.379, so I guess he'd have to be good defensively to make up for that.

Indeed. He threw out better than 50 percent of basestealers in his last year in the White Sox organization. OTOH, that projection seems optimistic. He's a weak contact guy.

Let's talk Melky.

Yes, 5 HRs (leads the team) and he hit 8 last year. 9 walks to 12 Ks and BB/PA is back to where it was his rookie year. His P/PA is up. He looks so good at the plate, a clear plan and refined discipline has allowed to wait for his pitches and hammer them instead of flailing at anything near the strike zone like he was last year. Defense consistent with his good performance last year. Way exceeded my expectations. Almost makes up for Cano.

Or Wang?

6.23 K/9, an added change and a better slider have made made him look like a strikeout pitcher when he's on. He's been awesome to watch this year. Struck out 9 today!

Cabrera, who was nearly dealt to Minnesota in a proposed trade for Johan Santana, is hitting .291 with 5 home runs and 11 runs batted in. He is tied for first on the team in homers, ranks second in runs (14), and has a better on-base percentage than Alex Rodriguez.

“Melky’s in a zone right now; he’s in a very good place,” Rodriguez said. “But what I know is he’s just in phenomenal shape. He’s probably 10 pounds lighter now than he was at this time last year. I think that’s a big part of his start, and he’s got a big energy level. He’s our battery on this team.”

I bet he would love one of those 4 year "Over the Hill Respect Contracts" too, but i am guessing he would do it for half the price, and half the years. The best part, like Posada, Piazza can even DH in a pinch. :)
