N.Y. Times: Yanks May Be Scratching Surface of Sox Items at New Stadium

On MSNBC’s “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” on Monday night, Olbermann reported that the construction worker who buried a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete foundation of the new Yankee Stadium told friends that he had buried other Red Sox memorabilia.

According to the program, the worker, Gino Castignoli, told friends that while he worked at the stadium for one day last summer he buried an official scorecard from the 2004 Yankees-Red Sox American League Championship Series in hopes of jinxing the Yankees.

...Castignoli “isn’t telling anybody where” he buried the program, Olbermann said, according to a transcript of the broadcast.

“That could pose a problem,” said Olbermann, who toured the stadium several weeks ago for a segment on “Countdown.” “The new park is pretty big.”

And when you’re done…don’t forget to add the steel mesh and expansion strip over the Shelley Duncan Era. Thank you.

I'm guessing he's making this one up.

But if the heroes - oh, wait, they don't want to be called heroes - who dug up the Ortiz jersey want to look for it, I'm all for it.

Anybody else just flash on an image of a forlorn Hank Steinbrenner sitting among the ruins of the new Yankee Stadium, crowbar in hand, a la Harry Caul?

Castignoli is in the running for 2008 D'bag of the Year. And even though it's an election year, I give him 3-1 odds to take the crown.

As silly as digging that jersey up was, it raised a lot of money for charity, a real lot.

Someone on SoSH mentioned that he met a different construction worker from the new "Stadium" at a bar (the guy showed him his security pass)who told him that he had buried a bunch of stuff in there (Mets and Sox batting helmets were mentioned, along with '04 WS commeritive coins). Whether it's true or not, I don't think this story is going away.

Love the Harry Caul reference.

Love the Harry Caul reference.

Gene Hackman in the Conversation? Just wanted to check my memory before running to IMDB.

edit: Hurray for me!

Oh, it's not. I think Yankees fans believed in curses more than Red Sox fans did. When something goes wrong in 2009 - and the odds are good that something will - someone will start to wonder aloud if there is any truth to it. The more bad things happen, the more people will "blame" the curse brought on by the worthless memorabilia. And maybe they'll dispatch construction workers on overtime pay to look for it all, again.

I thought they just thought that they need Paul O'Neil.

If this story is true, the something that goes wrong in 2009 will be the stadium collapsing because it's built on a foundation of memorabilia.

Where exactly did they bury Bernie Williams?
