NYBD: Silva: John Rocker on New Book, the Mets, Bud Selig, Steroids, and Politics

Rocker? Erudite? Ain’t that someone who hates Euro’s?

It’s been over a decade since his infamous Sports Illustrated interview with Jeff Pearlman that published on December 27th, 1999. If Mets fans are expecting the same brash and cocky individual they remember from the 1999 NLCS, think again. Rocker was extremely open, honest, and erudite during a 35-minute interview on the program. Here are some highlights.

...- He had some interesting things to say about Selig and the aftermath of the SI article. “When the SI story came out, the commissioner’s office and Selig were extremely upset with me,” Rocker said. “They asked me on four different occasions during the two week period to take a steroid test. The first three times I refused. The fourth time my agent literally pleaded with me saying please, the commissioner’s office is extremely upset with you; you need to take this test. You take the test, possibly pacify them, they go a little bit easier on you when they render their reprimand.”

- He finally took the steroid test and admitted to failing it, but the league denies knowing the results. “I finally succumb; ok I’ll take the test. Of course, I failed it miserably. And you mean to tell me the commissioner’s office who insisted over two weeks over four different occasions that I take a steroid test, they don’t know the result of said test?”

- I was surprised by his admission to taking steroids, so I asked him again if he was taking some sort of PED in 1999. “Yeah, of course I was. I mean who wasn’t? Let’s be honest here, who wasn’t?”

Narcissists don't feel guilt, only shame.

Rocker was on steroids? Who would have ever guessed?

The bar for erudite is now Snooki level, I see.

We are all erudite like we are all Spartacus. Crucifixions for everyone!

It's interesting about the steroids, admission, though. I wish someone who's not a complete ass would be as forthcoming.

Barry Bonds wasn't.

Now, now, we must respect Roman citizenship. Do you have no regard for due process?

Crucifixions for some, beheadings for other, tiny American flags for everyone!

I actually don't think Rocker lacks "intelligence." (FWIW, his father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher.) His Wisdom, however, is about a 3 on a scale of 3 to 18.

Derek Jeter?

Derek Jeter?

If Jeter would shock people, people haven't been paying attention or are living in a dream world about this issue, the kind of world that six year old children inhabit.

Didn't people stop being "shocked" after one or more of Palmeiro, Clemens, Pettitte, ARod, Manny et al got swept up in this? Take your pick.

Ray, you're wrong. Jeter would shock people. This website, for one, would explode.

Based on what?

It's not a political thing -- I would be fine with someone calling George Will erudite... or Bill Buckley... or PJ O'Rourke... I probably wouldn't bat an eye at Ron Paul being called erudite.

Now... Newt... Newt's 'intelligence' seems to be largely based on pretension and the fact that he's one hell of a carnival barker for his own public arena stardom.

As for Rocker -- I don't care who his parents are, what they did, or even his academic credentials. Simply not drooling on yourself or butchering fairly well known cliches doesn't make you erudite. Further, I'd say exhibiting the most of base of base level provincialism counts as a pretty good example OF your lack of eruditeness.

Based on what?
I dunno, based on what one means by "erudite", I suppose. I don't think he lacks intellectual capacity, is my point. He does, however, decline to fill it up. (And obviously if one of your criteria for being erudite is that he say #### that makes sense, he fails that as well.)

Taking a look at the '99 Braves:

Definites: Brian Jordan (mandatory in the NFL), Ozzie Guillén, Randall Carlito Simon (he knew the way), John Smoltz, Ryan Klepto, and Bret Boone.

But Glavine?, Maddux? Chipper-well yeah probably.

I was probably unclear. I agree that Jeter would shock people. My point is that these people would be stupid or naive, because there's no good reason to be shocked by this anymore.

I put together a list once of people who it would shock me if they were on PEDs (non-greenie division). I think David Wells was #1. Not because I think he was morally opposed, but because I can't imagine who took so little care of himself that he ended getting gout would bother with a performance enhancing drug.

Only on BBTF can I feel like joe-six-pack in a sea of nerds ;-)

Edit: I guess comic book and sci-fi conventions would do it too.

Friedman had a great take on Newt: "He's a stupid person's idea of a smart person".

Or a spy novelist's conception of the perfect Democratic mole. Cui bono and all that.

What are you guys talking about? I was just using the standard 3 to 18 scale that people use all the time. "That mediocre movie gets a 10", "That girl's a perfect 18!", etc.
