NYT: Araton: World Series Backdrop Comes in Red and Blue

Mayor Gavin Newsom vs. Mayor Tom Leppert (Batter vs. Pitcher Data is complete back to 1973 and mostly complete back to 1950…and still no luck!)

The men who manage the metropolises that will be competing when the World Series begins Wednesday night have played a little baseball in their time. In the case of the Dallas mayor, Tom Leppert, it was a few innings on the mound for the junior varsity at Claremont McKenna College in Southern California.

“They put me in when it was time for the outfielders to do wind sprints,” he said, jokingly.

Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco and a candidate for California lieutenant governor, was more serious about the game, starring at Redwood High School in Larkspur, Calif., and playing for two years at Santa Clara University.

“I was your standard 6-foot-3-inch first baseman,” he said.

Against the backdrop of the midterm elections, it seems fitting, even uncanny, that Leppert, a Republican, said he was a right-handed pitcher when he played and Newsom, a Democrat, proudly stated that he threw and hit from the left.

“Sort of the cliché,” he said.

So if a game goes 14 innings, bring in Newsom to face Leppert as the tiebraker?

And if the Rangers win, they bow to their Leppert messiah?

Note to world, Rangers don't even play in Dallas County.

Arlington's mayor is Dr Bob Cluck (there was a Bob Cluck in baseball, but he is not the mayor). Our Bob Cluck is most famous for appearing on a Tonight Show segment joking about how overweight everyone is in Arlington and revealing that his plan to combat obesity is a portable defibrillator.

I wonder what this means to Newsom. Is he trying to be self-deprecating, that he was just a big lug over there? Being Newsom, I sort of doubt it.

And he's still mayor?

That's now two attempts in one day to get a heated multi-hundred political thread raging, with no success so far. I like that a lot.

Agreed. I'd like to think that sports is one of those things that all sides can agree on. I remember there was a image last year of Hannity and Olbermann both enjoying a game, and close enough that they could take pictures of each other with their phones. I liked that.

Have you ever seen Arlington residents?
