NYT: Giants’ Jose Guillen Linked to Drug Investigation

All his HR records are bogus!

Jose Guillen, the San Francisco Giants outfielder, was kept off the team’s postseason roster shortly after federal authorities informed Major League Baseball that he was tied to an investigation into shipments of performance-enhancing drugs, according to several lawyers briefed on the matter.

...Just days before the postseason began, federal authorities called Major League Baseball officials to tell them that they were investigating shipments of human growth hormone that were sent to Guillen’s wife in the Bay Area, according to the lawyers.

The lawyers spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing an ongoing federal investigation. The commissioner’s office opened an investigation of its own and told the Giants that they should consider leaving Guillen off the postseason roster. The Giants did just that.

A spokesman for M.L.B. declined comment.

The latest in a long line of fate overruling the designs of Giants' management

Jonathan Sanchez needs a second offseason surgery, motivating the team to re-sign Juan Uribe.
Nick Johnson and Adam LaRoche turn down larger offers from the Giants to join other teams; the Giants, desperate for a 1B, call Aubrey Huff.
Aaron Rowand is forced to the DL when he catches a fastball in the eyesocket, Andres Torres, struggling mightily at the time, is pressed into service as the starting CF.
Mark DeRosa needs surgery (again), leaving the Giants without a single competent corner outfielder, and spurring the team to sign Pat Burrell.
Todd Wellemeyer injured, expedites Madison Bumgarner's promotion to the majors.
Jeremey Affeldt and Dan Runzler, the only lefties in the Giants' bullpen, are injured around the trade deadline, forcing the team to acquire Javier Lopez
Now, Jose Guillen, the starting right fielder for the last six weeks of the season, left off the postseason roster when he comes under investigation for PEDs; Cody Ross happens.

What a horrible blow . . . to the Braves, Phillies and Rangers

Fate can't deal with the Wilpons, either.

Yeah, not really the best time to criticize Giants' management. Besides, it's been done to death.

I get all the other ones, but I don't quite see the connection here.

I misinterpreted the concept a bit. Wow, those are a lot of lucky breaks there. My original point still stands though. Also, I am wondering about the same thing #9 is.

This Giants team seems reminisent of the 1993 Phillies... wonder if that means someone .... oh say Cruz ... will hit a walk off HR in game 6 to win the WS or something

I think he meant Freddy.

Ahh
That makes sense.
   14. Bhaakon Posted: October 29, 2010 at 10:05 PM (#3679631)
Yeah, I mixed up Jonathan and Freddy.

Giants can't always tell Jonathan and Freddy apart.

When they gave Freddy a new deal, they sent out an email about it. With a picture of Jonathan.

"Andres Torres, struggling mightily at the time, is pressed into service as the starting CF."

Torres was struggling? Last season, he was the Giants best position player. This year, he was one of their two best most of the season, though he did have some problems after he came back from the DL (appendectomy).

I know OMG CF and all that, but the Panda was awful good last year. He had a 4.8 WAR season and everything.

Mmm, I think some guy named Sandoval might have been a little better.

But, yes, Torres was terrific in the utility role in 2009.

he did have some problems after he came back from the DL (appendectomy).

Actually, Torres's real slump came before he went down with the appendicitis. In his final 12 games before going out, he went 5-for-47 with 1 HR, 0 walks, and 17 strikeouts. Upon his return, he finished out the regular season 8-for-33 with 2 HRs, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts.

Yes, struggling. Andres Torres did not have a good April at the plate. IIRC, he was 0-for the season when Rowand went down (albeit in a handful of at bats, because he was used mostly off the bench).

A handful? Try a thimbleful. Torres was 0-for-8 when Rowand was injured and Torres replaced him.

That isn't struggling. That's rusting.
   21. Bhaakon Posted: October 30, 2010 at 04:47 AM (#3679772)
he had a .696 OPS in September, whatever the reasons for it. The point is that he wasn't getting off the bench and into the everyday lineup any time soon without Rowand's injury.
