NYT: Kilgannon: Why Short Al From Brooklyn, Talkative Fan, Calls No More

Bruce from Bayside likes the Cleveland Indians, while Bruce from Flushing is a Yankees man. There is Marc in the Bronx (Denver Broncos) and Miriam from Forest Hills (Islanders and Mets). Regular listeners know that Jerry from Queens is Jerry Seinfeld, a proud FANdroid and occasional host of the show.

Short Al from Brooklyn was a Mets devotee who, having been a regular at Ebbets Field since boyhood, provided an old-timer’s perspective. He called in the predawn hours nearly every day since WFAN went on the air in 1987, becoming a favorite of Steve Somers, a host known as “The Schmoozer” who shared Al’s love for the Mets but prodded him to get to the point by saying, “Time is short, and so are you.”

Short Al suddenly disappeared from WFAN’s airwaves last year, leading some listeners to worry that he had joined the great lineup of FANdroids who have died, including John from Sandy Hook and Doris from Rego Park. “I can’t tell you how many times people called in and asked, ‘Why hasn’t he been calling? What happened?’ ” said Marc Malusis, another of WFAN’s overnight hosts.

The mystery is here answered!

Short Al is 5-foot-4, and he tells the story of his life as a baseball fan as though writing a script worthy of Kevin Costner.

Growing up in Coney Island, he said, he worked as a child in a penny arcade on the Boardwalk for money to go to Brooklyn Dodgers games. In 1934, at age 7, he went alone to his first game at Ebbets Field, by bus, trolley and subway. On June 15, 1938, he said, he was there when the Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Vander Meer pitched a no-hitter against the Dodgers — four days after pitching a no-hitter against the Boston Braves, the only major leaguer ever to achieve such a consecutive feat. Short Al himself did not play serious baseball, but he ran track at Lincoln High School.

“I got my speed by selling ice cream illegally on the beach,” he said. “You had to be fast, to run away from the cops.

“I started boxing at age 7 because I was a little guy and got beat up in school,” he added. “I had 130 amateur fights and I was never knocked out because I have no neck, which is good for boxers and baseball catchers. Look at Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench.”

Costner started his career in mostly good to great movies (Night Shift; Silverado; The Untouchables; Bull Durham; Field of Dreams; Dances With Wolves; JFK; A Perfect World*; and Tin Cup). Yet if you are under 30, you know him mostly as a star whose movies mostly suck (The Bodyguard; Wyatt Earp; The War; Waterworld; The Postman; Message in a Bottle; 3000 Miles to Graceland; Dragonfly; Rumor Has It; The Guardian; and Swing Vote). I wonder, then, if saying Short Al's story is "worthy of Kevin Costner" is saying, Short Al, your story sucks?

*Never saw it, but heard it's good. Most of Costner's low-rated movies I never saw, as well, but based on their bad reviews I'm putting them in the dog category.

I don't see the answer to the mystery. But I don't really care either. blah blah blah

It has to do with him sleeping with his daughter, but it's not incestuous.

I haven't listened to FAN in a couple of years but used to enjoy Somers' overnight show. Doris (cough cough) was annoying. Short Al and Bruce from Bayside were bores. Bruce from Flushing was pompous.

Where does No Way Out fall?
I thought it was a pretty good movie, but I saw it when I was younger and much more impressed with movies that had "twist" endings.

Somebody needs to get Short Al a laptop and a wireless connection. He'd be a nice addition over here.

I think Eli "Whitey's Out to Get the Black Man" from Westchester is dead.

I forgot about No Way Out. That's a great movie. Gene Hackman was good in it, too. I think that was late 1980s -- I won't bother to look it up -- which fits in the period in which most of Costner's movies were still mostly in the good-to-great category. I should note that Costner has made a handful of quality films since his bad period started*, but he's made enough bad ones to keep his infamy going.

*Waterworld and The Postman were the original disasters which in my mind tarred him with the "makes bad movies" broad brush. So despite making Thirteen Days and Open Range in the last decade, Costner has not yet shaken his bad reputation in my mind.

Silverado sucked. And I -love- Westerns.

Kevin Costner's only flaw is that he is a horrible actor. I mean, he's good enough at what he does, but the man has zero emotional range. All he can be is Kevin Costner in various iterations.

Speaking of actors who make so many bad movies that their presence alone is a good guide post to avoiding a film, I heard Eric Roberts interviewed a few days ago, promoting some action flick he is in. Roberts was in The Dark Knight last year, and that was a good movie (as comic book movies go), but he might be the reigning champion for sheer number of lousy films.

I'm looking at a list of his movies and these are the ones which come to mind as stinkers: Witless Protection, Phat Girlz, National Security, Spun, Mercy Streets, Most Wanted, The Prophecy 2: Ashtown, Heaven's Prisoners, The Specialist, The Best of the Best 2, Rude Awakening and The Coca-Cola Kid. Roberts started out in the early 1980s making very good movies (Runaway Train, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Star 80 and Raggedy Man), but fell off the quality cliff 20 years ago.

Costner was great in The Big Chill.
   19. Rich Rifkin Posted: July 05, 2009 at 07:00 PM (#3242652)
I wonder if anyone told Costner before he screened the final film that his part was removed entirely in the editing? It's not as if he was a star back then. He was basically a bit part actor (in what would have been a bit part in The Big Chill). I could imagine Lawrence Kasdan just not bothering to call one of his bit part players to let him know in advance that his bit part was deleted. Then Costner shows up to the screening with his family and friends and watches the whole film and thinks to himself, "Did I come to the right movie?"

I believe you mean "TV's Eric Roberts".

Well, that's the thing, Eric Roberts is in movies that aren't good. I don't know how good a guide post he is necessarily, just because you don't really need one for most of his films. Look at the list you just made. How many of those movies do you recognize by name? I count 6 for myself. Of those, I've seen one (The Specialist), and it was no better or worse than every other crappy big-star action movie. It's Broken Arrow or Walking Tall or whatever. Watch it on USA at some bizarre time.

The other four, I didn't need to hear that TVER was in them. I could already tell they sucked by what I knew/saw. And now take a look at those you don't know by name and just decide based on the names. These are ones I know, but "Witless Protection"? "Phat Girlz"? "The Prophecy 2"? You could see that in a listing with no other info, just a two-hour white box with a label, and you're not turning those on.

TVER shouldn't be the poster child for this. His movies aren't that bad, he doesn't sabotage what would have otherwise been good product anyway, and part of the reason he's in so many bad movies is that he's in so many ####### movies. Look at his IMDB. Dude has 113 acting credits in the last 10 years. He has 10 movies and a voice role in a game that are coming out. I did learn from his page that there was an LA Confidential miniseries, 13 episodes, supposed to air on HBO, starring Keifer Sutherland. I can't believe HBO didn't ask for more episodes and then when they went ahead and filmed them and shopped it to Fox, they just didn't show them all.

Oh, and as for Costner, he was a Mac before that dingleberry stoner/hipster/whatever.

They should have him replace Long for at least one commercial. I bet he and Hodgman would have great chemistry.

(EDIT) This is linked on that page, and is freaking hilarious: Drunken Jeff Goldblum for the iMac.

I'm no fan of Costner, but I thought he was quite good in Swing Vote (no joke, no qualification like "for him,"). It's not a movie I went out of my way to see (I saw it on a long-distance flight), and I can't really recommend the movie itself, but Costner himself (who I don't like in just about every other movie I've seen him in) was not just "watchable" or "bearable" but (in my opinion) outright "good." He was almost good enough to recommend watching just for him.
