NYT:  Rangers Turn to Wilson, Their Ace and Student of the Game

When he was 13, Wilson read Seaver’s book “The Art of Pitching,” an analytical study of various approaches to pitching, from which Wilson can still recall specific passages and illustrations.

*  *  *

Despite being left-handed, Wilson holds Seaver in such great esteem as a pitcher that he still cannot forgive the five voters out of 430 who did not put Seaver on their Hall of Fame ballot.

“Who’s the jerk that didn’t vote for him?” Wilson said. “That’s what I want to know.”

This guy could be a Primate!

He's right, of course. What possible argument could someone put forth asserting that Tom Seaver is not qualified for the Hall of Fame?

This has been discussed before. Three of the five ballots were blank, to protest Pete Rose's enforced absence. One of the remaining two ballots was submitted by a writer who blamed recuperation from recent open-heart surgery as the reason he failed to spot Seaver's name. He said he would have voted for him, but messed up. Ballot #5 belonged to one of those "I never vote for first-year players" guys, and is thus the only overt "Tom Seaver, you do not get my vote" ballot.

So you got one bad unrelated circumstance (x3), one mistake, and one dumb argument.

I don't think "If I can't vote for this guy, I won't vote for anyone" is any less dumb than "If this guy didn't get 100%, neither should this other guy". YMMV.

In the "how much less dumb is it?" sweepstakes, I'm going to go with "somewhat!"
