NYT: Tenor Adopted and Disowned by Yankees Leaves Town

The Reduction of Ronan Tynan: There are many ways to be reduced. Fame. Power. Love. Location, Location, Location.

Ronan Tynan became a walk-on Yankee star in 2000, when he stepped onto the field with his artificial legs and clarion voice and belted out “God Bless America” during the seventh inning stretch of important games.

But that stopped on Oct. 16 of last year, when a woman accused Mr. Tynan of making an anti-Semitic remark. Since then, the charmed existence he enjoyed since emigrating from Ireland in 1998 has soured — from famous to infamous, as he puts it.

...Now Mr. Tynan is headed to the anti-New York, as far as baseball is concerned. He has sold his apartment on the East Side of Manhattan and bought one in Boston.

He insists he has not given up on New York — he will keep a rented apartment here. Nor is he angry at the city. He said he was moving mainly for a change and because he had family and friends in Boston.

...His decision to move to Boston was reported online this week by The Irish Echo in an article that envisioned Mr. Tynan singing for the Red Sox.

Asked if this might ever come to pass, Mr. Tynan would say only that he had had no contact with Red Sox officials. As for the possibility of developing feelings for the Red Sox, he said, “We’ll see how it goes.”

They gave Tynan a 2000 World Series ring?!?!

How long would it take him to sing "Sweet Caroline"?

They gave Tynan a 2000 World Series ring?!?!

And yet the Yankees have brought shame upon the franchise, by never properly acknowledging and rewarding Rednex.

Really? That's what you're going with, New York Times? What's next, an Arts & Leisure retrospective about Roger Ebert's jaw sessions with Siskel?

social discussion board, brought to you by Repoz ; )

It's sad when just a whiff of the remotest possibility of controversy damns you. Tynan is John Proctor. There's nothing else I'd expect, but on the surface it's sick how the Yankees circled their wagons on this. The whole 'we wish him the best' rings like a lame kiss of death; if that's the Yankee line in this matter, they clearly DON'T wish him the best.

No siree, nobody does the, "Let's celebrate our differences/discrimination! discrimination!" toggle better than America. I guess Tynan goes on Oprah this week, right?

<Blockquote>Tynan is John Proctor.

If, after his time in New York, he had artificial arms instead of artificial legs, he'd be Scott Proctor.

Boston's not the anti-New York. Los Angeles is the anti-New York. In baseball terms and in big city terms. I've now lived in both. I prefer baseball in LA and everything else in New York.

Boston and New York are the two most similar cities in America in terms of lifestyle.

There should be a difference between PC-ism and bigotry. Tynan was fired over worries about the Yankees image, nothing more.

While I agree that there's a difference between being un-PC and being bigoted, the Yankees in particular have to be very sensitive about issues surrounding anti-Semitism, given that probably 10%, if not more, of their fanbase comprises Jewish people.

And?
   12. YR Denies Jesus Montero Posted: March 07, 2010 at 08:51 PM (#3474437)
I don't think Tynan should be faulted for his comments about Jews; he's an Irishman and thus likely drunk.

And remember he has less body mass than a typical person his size.

Forget the singing, I want to see Ronan Tynan race David Ortiz from home plate to the Green Monster and back.

This is where Trivial Pursuit jumped the shark. They'd include a Ronan Tynan question under S&L;, instead of A&H;.

I see...so you've never lived in BOS?

They better not let that jackass into Fenway. Games last long enough as it is.
