NYT: Terrible/Hilarious Baseball TV Spots (RR)

Last week for a post about Rick Ankiel, we linked to this commercial for the Cardinals’ website, and then this morning we saw this goofy commercial for the Twins featuring the Minnesota pitching staff singing Beethoven’s Ode to Joy with terrible pitching-centric lyrics.

This leads us to believe that there is a treasure trove of good and bad local baseball commercials out there over the years. Here are some for this year’s Blue Jays and a classic Yankees one (for Adidas) featuring Orlando Hernandez, David Cone and an inquisitive Luis Sojo.

Damn it, I had this idea and was going to do a post on it. Screw you, New York Times!

Speaking of Miller Lite, the one with Bob Uecker in the nosebleed seats was my favorite.

Great seats, eh buddy?.... HE MISSED THE TAG!

That Roger Clemens ad implied that his fastball was faster than a 40-MPH or so speed limit. Was that "Legs" playing in the background?

Yeah, I didn't understand the relevance of "Legs" either.

Though I can say, the Legs video ushered in puberty for me.

The future Mrs. Chuck Finley did it for me in that Whitesnake video. She received invaluable assistance from the future Mrs. Matt Williams in Blame it on Rio.

Chicks dig the long ball.

That aside, the Miller Lite commercials were the best.

I still wander up to people for no reason and ask, "Hey Coney, why don't you have a dance?"

What idiot takes down commercials from youtube because of copyright? It's free ads people! (Jays ones are down...they have an idiotic marketing department)

The greatest commercial of all time was one from the 70s where this basketball player walks up to a mom and boy who are trying to decide with brand of hot dog wieners to buy, and the kid says with a maximum of joy and awe, "Harthorne Wingo!".

I followed basketball as well as I could back then and even I did not know who Harthorne Wingo was. (I figured the kid was trying to say "Hawthorne" but that was the best he could do.) And once I figured out who he was, it became even more ludicrous--I lived in the Midwest, who in the world was Harthorne Wingo to me?

It's not a commerical, but the new Orioles Magic video is an instant classic.

Bronson Arroyo is currently strumming his guitar for JTM meats here in Ohio. They're almost as painful as watching him pitch (last night's performance notwithstanding).
