Oakland A’s Stunner: Weeks sent to Sacramento

OAKLAND—Second baseman Jemile Weeks, one year removed from a standout rookie season, was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday to clear a spot on the 25-man roster for new shortstop Stephen Drew.

Yeah not sure why anyone expected that his stunning batting average would have kept him in the Majors. Even in the Bermuda Triangle of suck that has been the A’s middle infield all year.

Weeks was the one untouchable on the roster, in the offseason. Beane built a team around him.

Weeks has been awful, so this really shouldn't be surprising. Shooty Babitt had a better year at second for the A's back in the early eighties.

This was weird.

OAKLAND -- A's players found out they had a new teammate during the seventh inning of their Monday game against the Minnesota Twins, when it was announced over the public address system.

Before shortstop Adam Rosales stepped to the plate, it was announced over the in-stadium speakers that another shortstop, Stephen Drew, had been acquired by Oakland from the Diamondbacks for Single-A infielder Sean Jamieson. Moments later, Rosales popped out.

Rosters expand in 10 days ... unless Sac is going to the playoffs, Weeks will be back then. And, sure, it was awkward timing but I assume Rosales becomes one of the 2B options for the rest of the season.

Also it's the A's ... Drew will now hit 100/090/110 and Rosales will look like an exciting option.

A Pennington/Rosales platoon should be at least as good as Weeks, assuming Penny picks up 2B quickly enough (he has played some there before).

This would have been the perfect year for Wes Timmons to finally get a big league role, but he just started off the season so horribly.

Also, Anderson looked pretty awesome last night.

It's 9 days...I'm assuming it's just a temporary middle-infield roster crunch. And I'm guessing Weeks was sent down due to Options issues with some of their other struggling players.

If the A's go to the playoffs, how long back would we have to go to find an infield in the playoffs that hits that poorly. 1B, for the first time since early Hattaberg is doing really well, so that might scew the numbers.

I would guess the 1981 A's, in all seriousness. They were pretty bad.

Are all the Molinas accounted for? Are we sure that some of them haven't decided to expand their market to 2B and have cleverly hidden their transition by appearing to be too fast to be suspected as Molinas?

They could have optioned Rosales, who has already been optioned this year. Or Pennington, to have him adjust to 2B in the minors. Not that I would have preferred the latter.

2009 Twins... yea thats pretty bad. If you include the catcher the A's are much worse though.

Wow, 81 A's are a facinating group. All the outfielders and the DH are around 130 OPS+, and all the infielders and catcher are closer to 80-90.

Noone tests positive for testesterone, its either synthetic or elevated levels. Otherwise I would hope all male atheletes would fail this test. Which one it is says a lot about what may have been taken. I still have not read seen any intelligent concensus on what Melky had. Ive read both so far.
