Rumor is ~$5m guaranteed, plus incentives.

No one knows what the A's are doing, but they are doing something, that is for certain.

That's not a bad price for Plouffe, if healthy. He's lacks a tactical hook but has been a solid defender in the past, has some pop, is generally decent.

Now for Oakland? I dunno.
Question I've been expecting to hear but haven't: are they under pressure to increase payroll? I think so. That said, I'd rather than go with more of a stars and scrubs approach or invest more in other areas than in 30+ semi-regulars but I'm not privy to their particular political environment.

What pressure could be applied to Oakland to increase payroll? The new CBA strips them of their $34 million/year in revenue sharing. I guess they could phase out the revenue sharing faster (currently scheduled to decrease to zero over four years).

So, Oakland fans, I was looking at an MLB depth chart for the As the other day, and holy crap!

Is Plouffe mainly insurance in case Ryon Healy craps the bed in spring training? Would they play him at first over Alonso and whatever other odd options they have there? Is he a candidate for left field, maybe? (That outfield is a little scary.)

4 - I'm not sure Danny, just reading tea leaves.

Word is moving Healy off 3B to be 1B/DH.

They are signing guys to be placeholders for all of the guys in AAA who aren't quite ready.

3B Plouffe (Chapman)
2B Lowrie (Baretto or Semien)
SS Semien (Baretto)
1B Alonso (Olson/Nunez)

Their OF is pretty bad minus Khrush who is around average in LF.

With Butler's contract ($10 million), Plouffe ($5 million), Lowrie ($6 million), Rajai ($6 million), Axford ($5 million) coming off the books after this year the only guy making more than a few million will be Madson at $7.5 million.

If the young guys come up they should be able to compete in 2018 and will have a lot of payroll to play with, especially if they get the ballpark issue settled. 2019 and 2020 look even better.

This year will be a sub 75 win season again I'm guessing unless the young pitching goes bonkers.

It was a while ago, but Plouffe has experience playing the outfield, second base, and even shortstop (he started their 45 times in 2011). Since Billy Beane's new thing is "defense doesn't matter at all you idiots*", there's a chance Plouffe becomes their much shittier version of Sean Rodriguez or something.

*Just look at this glorious infield for their May 11th game in Boston:

1b: Billy Butler
2B: Chris Coghlan
SS: Marcus Semien
3B: Yonder Alonso

3B Plouffe (Chapman)
2B Lowrie (Baretto or Semien)
SS Semien (Baretto)
1B Alonso (Olson/Nunez)

Wait a minute, how can one guy be a placeholder for Semien and Semien be a placeholder for another guy. And then it all ends up with Baretto playing two positions at once.

I just meant that in 2-3 years hopefully Barreto and Semien are holding down SS and 2B. I'm just not sure which alignment is better. Kind of like Addison Russell and Castro swapping midseason.

I'm a bit of a Plouffe fan. He's not a star and he has obvious deficiencies, but he's got power and he can play a lot of positions. I've long been of the opinion that utility players are underrated. That said, if this means they're moving Healy off third, they're either much lower on his D at 3B or much higher on his bat than I am. Healy hit the snot out of the ball in the bigs last year, but his pre-2016 rack record is weak.

That said, maybe that's the kind of bet that a team like the A's needs to make. Anyway, this is a signing I would be happy about if my team made it, if my team didn't already have K Seager, Cano, and Cruz.

I have trouble seeing how less revenue will motivate them to increase spending. More likely to motivate them to move.

I do think the MLB should require 100% of revenue sharing to be spent on payroll, sorry the Players didn't get that in the CBA.
