Oakland’s own MC Hammer to throw out first pitch at A’s wild-card game

By now, you’ve probably heard who’s starting on the mound for the A’s in Wednesday’s AL Wild Card Game as the team hosts the Tampa Bay Rays.

... and it’s MC Hammer.

The Oakland native rapper/entertainer will get ceremonial first pitch honors for the Green and Gold in front of a hopefully robust crowd of 50,000 screaming fans.

Hammer, AKA Stanley Burrell, was born in Oakland and served as the clubhouse assistant and batboy for the A’s from 1973 - ‘80, according to an A’s press release. This was around the time he earned his nickname “Little Hammer” due to his resemblance to none other than Hall of Famer Hammerin’ Hank Aaron.

[Insert your own punchline here]

He's widely loved in the Bay where he was born and continues to live. He does a lot of charity work and puts on shows for kids. He's a big fan of baseball and the team, and has worked with them before. This is great.

Makes sense. I too have heard that he's always been and continues to be a huge A's fan.

But please, please, please have him wear those parachute pants....they were epic.

Last weekend my kids expressed interest in seeing the new Addams Family movie, which gave me an excuse to play Hammer's "Addams Groove" in the car. They begged and begged me to turn it off until I couldn't stop laughing.

Am I crazy or has he already thrown out a postseason first pitch for the A's?

I sat a few rows behind him on a flight a few years ago. He was energetic and gregarious, signing autos and doing selfies, very cheerful fellow.

This is some solid dadding. Thumbs up.

How/why did you have "Addams Groove" available in the car? It's like an Open Bottle (of Suck) violation just waiting to happen. I love technology, but we need less Can We and more Should We when it comes to wanton Pandora abuse.

He should definitely throw a curveball.

I remember this too. As TFA and [1] mention, Hammer is still very involved with the A's (and the community, etc.), he's definitely done things at A's games before.

They should have Stomper swing and miss at the pitch and play "U Can't Touch This" as Hammer walks off the mound.

I once played a poker game in Vegas in which the dealer swore that she was MC Hammer's mother. She gave us a great story about how her irresponsible son blew all the money that he made and she was reduced to dealing cards in a Vegas casino, instead of riding around in a limo like she did back in the 90s. I didn't do well in that game, but I made sure to tip her well.

He's thrown several. I think this is the first:

Lou Gehrig wore Hammer Pants.

If Hammer breaks 80 with the opening pitch there are some playoff teams who could use him in their bullpen...

He threw a pretty good first pitch last season, but at age 57 I don't think he's hitting 80 anymore.

I always liked this story about MC Hammer.
