Oaktown: Go Go, GoGo Gio (Pitch fx analyis)

Takes a look at Gio Gonzalez’s debut using Pitch fx data. Gio’s got a lot of movement, maybe too much to control.

Oh yeah and the A’s lose again.

Gee how are those trades working out now? Nice to see that Beane traded one pitcher that goes on the DL alot for another pitcher that looks like he is going on the DL.

Not too well. It seems like just yesterday that people were thinking the A's were "contenders"; now they look like one of the worst teams in the A.L after Seattle.

If they lose tonight, I believe it's the longest losing streak of Beane's tenure, and it now looks like they'll probably end up with an even worse record than last year. The downward trajectory of the parabola continues.

Hey iamawesomer how does his pitch fx data compare to Zito (when he was good)? Do you see these two as similar pitchers?

People are still bashing the A's trades? I'm an A's fan but they were going nowhere this year despite the record, so make some deals for the future. Not sure why this is so hard to understand. We can debate how good the trades are, but that's hard to do at this point given that they were getting players for next year and beyond.

I think the trades have been better than expected so far. Eveland and Smith were better than advertised, Gonzalez's defense is better than expected and Gio was among the league leaders in k's in the PCL.

Haren has been awesome and signed a cheap extension but the team is probably better off this season and in the future due to that trade. Swisher has been OK this year but wouldn't have pushed them over the top or anything. It's hard to say that Harden or Blanton would have made much difference this year and it's way too early to say that the prospects haven't panned out.

Oh ya and Gallagher isn't on the DL (yet).

I think pitchfx data only goes back to 07 so Zito was well in to suck stage by then. I've heard the Zito comp before wrt to the awesome curveball/middling fastball velocity, having not seen Gio's start last night I can't say a whole much on how he looked compared to Zito.
