HOW WILL THE YANKEES LOSE TODAY????
   3. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 21, 2018 at 07:25 PM (#5676835)
Soto the third guy up this inning.
   4. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: May 21, 2018 at 07:30 PM (#5676839)
First pitch in the major leagues, Soto puts it out, a no-doubter to the opposite field. 3-run homer.

19 years old! Nice start.

I thought the same thing, but the MLB Network guys are saying he struck out as a pinch hitter yesterday.

Oh, rats, he did too do that. Still, pretty awesome AB.

Thomas Boswell @ThomasBoswellWP
Juan Soto hit the first pitch of his first game in the Nats starting lineup over the leftfield bullpen, directly over his own name being shown on the the LF board & into the bleachers above/beyond pen. A long HR for a RH hitter.

I'd call him Fat Bastard, but I think Colon ATE Fat Bastard ...

Ugh, wasted.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:20 PM (#5676870)
Mikolas has looked completely different in the real season than he did in spring training (to be fair his last two starts in spring he looked about as good as advertised)

As it stands though, he's been one of the best bargains in baseball up to this point in time. (non-pre-arb division of course) and of course as I type this two back to back hits.(although Garcia should have had that second one)
   12. Count Vorror Rairol Mencoon (CoB) Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:25 PM (#5676871)
Report in, BDC, are you at the ballpark?

Matt Carpenter with another double, he has 13 this year, and I think he's gotten 5 of them in the past 5 days. ----double checking---- 7 in the past 6 games(counting this game)
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:31 PM (#5676879)
Mets reportedly showing interest in Jose Bautista.

I don't see why a team wouldn't be interested in at least kicking the tires on him, provided he's willing to go to the minors.
   16. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:38 PM (#5676884)
I missed Didi's first-inning flyout, dammit
   17. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:40 PM (#5676886)
Jason Vargas actually pitched well! Too bad the Mets can't score any runs.
   18. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:41 PM (#5676888)
GLEYBER!!! 3-0 Yanks
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:43 PM (#5676890)
Gleyber Torres 2-run HR adds to Yankee lead. It's a shame the Yanks had to give up Aroldis Chapman to get him, I'd really like to have both . . . oh, wait.
   20. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:46 PM (#5676894)
Colon's career ERA against the Yanks going into tonight's game: 6.11

How bad is that? It's even worse than Kenny Rogers', if such a thing is possible.

You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.

Sir Didi takes the hit away!
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:53 PM (#5676900)
Cardinals just attempted a 9-3 putout on Ian Kennedy... didn't quite get it, but it was kinda close.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 08:54 PM (#5676901)
Jon Jay has been hot lately..... damn him getting a single against us.

Torres touches up Colon in the second. But Colon is a marvel. He's throwing some pretty nasty cut fastball's and front-door two-seamers to lefties. Maybe he'll pitch forever.

Anyone hear anything about his thinking on the future? He's had to beg for a job three different times in the past couple of years... at some point in time that gets old, unless you just do not want to quit.(which I couldn't blame him for doing... If I was a ballplayer, you would have to drag my cold carcass off the field before I ever gave it up)

   29. Bote Man is no David Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:05 PM (#5676909)
Noted home run hitter Mark Reynolds hits his 2nd home run of the game, his 4th since joining the Nationals MLB squad a couple weeks ago (if that).
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:06 PM (#5676911)
Carpenter gets his average over .200 with that base hit.. he's raised his average from .140 on May 15 to .206....which may not be a 'great' average, but it's been a nice week for him.

I know one team who'd love that, and I don't mean the Rangers.

Walker crushes one!
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:12 PM (#5676921)
Soler is not a good defensive outfielder, not sure why he is playing in right.
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5676926)
Torres was 4 months old when Colon debuted in MLB (not kidding). no respect for elders

also, Mets have walked 3 of the last 5 Marlins hitters in the 7th - and needed 3 RPs to do it
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:14 PM (#5676927)
O'Neil with his third homerun of the season, three in the last three games, and he's yet to actually make solid contact on any of them.... well the first one was solid but had no lift.
   38. phredbird Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:14 PM (#5676929)
wow. this o'neill guy is making the most of his opportunity. that was a moon shot.

it wasn't deep, but it was really high. at first i thought he had popped up.

all this scoring with two out ... nice.

wow. this o'neill guy is making the most of his opportunity. that was a moon shot.

I want to see him "really" launch one. He's extremely strong and can take less than perfect contact and launch it, but he has Stanton level of power in him with a solid hit, and I want to see that.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:21 PM (#5676937)
O'Neil and Bader were supposed to duke it out for the fourth outfield spot (assuming that Jose Martinez is the starting first baseman) his injury in spring training prevented him from getting a chance to compete.... but right now it's Ozuna who should be looking over his shoulder and not Bader... (not that Ozuna isn't going to obviously bounce back or that he has to look over his shoulder)

that was a swing. criminy.
   45. phredbird Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:25 PM (#5676944)
man, double play and martinez doing the martinez shuffle (quick foot off the bag after the throw)
   46. rconn23 Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:25 PM (#5676945)
The Yankees really will need another starting pitcher by the deadline. Another dreadful start by Tanaka.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:30 PM (#5676952)
I'm at the grocery store yesterday, and listening to two of the stockers, and one guy was ######## "fans and teams need to realize that no matter what, at some point in time EVERY team needs to rebuild and I think that is what the Cardinals are failing to realize."....

and I'm thinking the Cardinals have one of the youngest teams in baseball, are going into a huge off season where they are adding a ton of money to their coffers, and have one of the better minor leagues in baseball....it's not impossible to win and rebuild at the same time.
   48. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:32 PM (#5676953)
Rangers started one guy hitting over .250 (Mazara .275) and bottom 4 no better than .203

ALL RISE! The Honorable Aaron Judge has gaveled a HR (#12) to the grassy knoll in Texas, giving the Yankees the lead again, 5-4.

So, is O'Neill a first-ballot Hall of Famer, or will he have to wait a couple years?
   54. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:44 PM (#5676965)
O'neill is getting a fan club apparently.... just ripped that one into the corner....
   55. phredbird Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:45 PM (#5676967)
53, all he has to do is keep hitting a home run every game. piece of cake.
   56. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:48 PM (#5676970)
Apparently Jordan Hicks was pissed off at Herrera taking so much time in the batters box, that he decided to add a little bit more giddyup to his pitches against him.
   57. rconn23 Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:50 PM (#5676975)
Yankees really tempting fate by keeping Tanaka in this game. He has absolutely nothing.

Starters don't get pulled before completing five innings, it's as silly as some teams reliance on the lefty specialist, but that is the game today. In the past, if the guy has nothing, the manager had no problem pulling him in the third or fourth, in today's game, that isn't happening.

Gleyber Torres plugs Colon for another HR, knocking him out of the game.
   62. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:59 PM (#5676984)
Didi adds a groundout and a K, and I missed both. clearly I am not dedicated. now hitting .244

Colon still pitching in the 6th - won't the Rangers look foolish if he gets hurt!
   63. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 09:59 PM (#5676985)
Early in the game, the Cardinal announcers listed a stat for Ian Kennedy....among the 671(from memory) pitchers who have started 9 or more games against the Cardinals. Ian Kennedy has the 8th highest era with 7.41(again from memory so I'm assuming both of those numbers are a bit off)
   64. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:00 PM (#5676988)
Gleyber Torres plugs Colon
Please tell me that was intentional.
   65. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:00 PM (#5676989)
Another injury for the Cardinals, Greg Garcia is out.... He isn't the biggest household name, but we are still talking about a guy with a 95 ops+ who plays three up the infield positions at an average level.... pretty much what you want for a bench guy.
   66. Randomly Fluctuating Defensive Metric Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:01 PM (#5676990)
There's been so much baseball news (especially Soto) that I missed the Cards calling up O'Neill. And he's raking. That could be like the Buhner trade. Except Ken Phelps is probably better than Gonzales.
   67. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:06 PM (#5676995)
Pham with his fourth strikeout of the day.... I'm thinking he needs to talk to his eye doctor again.

DIDI DOUBLES, DEDICATES IT TO HOWIE. And Yanks double up on Rangers, 8-4

whoa. i turn my back for a minute and carp launches one!
   70. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5677008)
It's the homerun inning for Make-a-wish foundation..... as soon as McLaughlin gets done reading that script... Carpenter sends one over the fence.... 6-0 Cardinals.
   71. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:21 PM (#5677013)
crappy call by the ump there for strike three on Martinez.
   72. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:31 PM (#5677018)
Mikolas completed the 8th inning at 96 pitches. It will be interesting to see if he goes out there for the ninth in a 6-0 game(currently)
   73. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:34 PM (#5677019)
4th constructive strikeout by Cardinal batters....
   74. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5677024)
Mikolas out to pitch the ninth, Jon Jay helps him along by flying out on the first pitch, and Soler is swinging at everything to speed the game along.
   75. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5677026)
Two outs, top of the ninth at 101 pitch, Cardinals let Flaherty go to 120 yesterday, so not seeing any reason to think that Matheny won't give Mikolas a good chance to complete this game. (by mlb.com gamescore, he's at 93)
   76. Howie Menckel Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5677027)
Didi doubles a run!

ok, my work is done there

Does Matheny even have anyone up in the pen?
   78. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:42 PM (#5677032)
Dangit... Mikolas allowed the first walk he's allowed at home all season. Game score drops to 91....
   79. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5677034)
...and future Hall of Famer O'Neill snags the last out. Tip of the cap to Mikolas, that was a hell of a game, even if it was against KC.
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:43 PM (#5677035)
Does Matheny even have anyone up in the pen?

I haven't heard any mention of anyone warming up. Someone should be at least pre-warming up, but not actually warming up....

not that it matters complete game for Mikolas....and back to 93 game score.
   81. phredbird Posted: May 21, 2018 at 10:47 PM (#5677038)
uh, and i turn my back for a couple of minutes to do some chores and the game is over. nice. good win.

Brad Brach really is the worst.

From the broadcast, there seems to be a lot of Yankee fans at the game tonight. Rangers fans must be boycotting their obsolete ballpark.

If a manager visits his pitcher in the on-deck circle (after the previous batter has made an out) to ask whether the pitcher can pitch the next inning or whether he should pinch-hit, shouldn't that count as a mound visit? It may not surprise you to learn that the manager who just did that was Dave Roberts.

If a manager visits his pitcher in the on-deck circle (after the previous batter has made an out) to ask whether the pitcher can pitch the next inning or whether he should pinch-hit, shouldn't that count as a mound visit?

Why is that different than talking in the dugout? If Roberts waves the pitcher to come toward him, instead of going toward the on-deck circle himself, is it any different?

That should count as a visit too. Any discussion (non-injury I suppose) that interrupts the game, regardless of where it takes place.

That should count as a visit too. Any discussion (non-injury I suppose) that interrupts the game, regardless of where it takes place.

There are on-deck circle conversations between managers, or hitting coaches, and batters fairly often. Throwing a flag on them when the batter is a pitcher seems excessive.
   89. Howie Menckel Posted: May 22, 2018 at 12:19 AM (#5677074)
well, the "6-visit rule" is a ridiculous solution to a minor problem, so I support whatever maneuvers reveal it to be even more ridiculous.

has any team all season even reached a 5th visit mound?
I would fire the dope who came up with this bizarre fix (not that I want 6 mound visits, either).
   90. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: May 22, 2018 at 12:29 AM (#5677077)
a minor problem
Didn't watch any of the postseason last year, eh? Anyway, I agree that expanding the rule to cover other visits wouldn't have a big impact, by why not do it? The exact same principles apply to other visits, and it seems kind of arbitrary to differentiate based only on location.
   91. Perry Posted: May 22, 2018 at 01:04 AM (#5677079)
Interesting end to the Rox-Dodgers game in LA. 2 out in the 9th, 2-1 Rox, Matt Kemp grounds one to the SS hole, and is safe as Story's throw bounces past Desmond. Kemp takes one step toward 2nd after he sees the throw get away, and catcher Tony Wolters, hustling all the way to 1B to back up the play, throws back to Desmond and gets Kemp diving back in.

I agree that expanding the rule to cover other visits wouldn't have a big impact, by why not do it?

The umpires in the Nationals game WASTED more time standing around and debating whether it counted as a mound visit than the actual mound visit consumed. The cure is worse than the disease!

(This presumes there is actually a disease in need of a cure.)
