Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray drafted ninth by A’s, plans to play football

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley made it clear over the last few days that he believed quarterback Kyler Murray would stay with the Sooners and play football this fall instead of immediately turning pro in baseball if he was drafted early. Turns out, Murray was drafted earlier than anyone expected ... and Riley was still right.

Though Murray was selected No. 9 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft by the Oakland A’s on Monday night, he confirmed a few hours later that he will play football for the Sooners this fall. Moreover, he noted that the A’s are OK with his plan. (It would be unfathomable for them not to be if they’re drafting him that high.) Murray had previously been mum regarding his future.

This seems... ill advised.

So he's, like, Kyle Murray, only more so?

Hope he doesn't pray before the game.

I wonder why he falls short of being the Kylest.

Schwarber.

EDIT: Or Kyle Rote Sr. :-)

He's got to be like the original Kyle, doesn't he?

Apparently yes ... per his Wiki page ...

Rote jr. said of his father, "To me the most remarkable thing about him from a football standpoint was that he had fourteen teammates who named their sons after him."

So including his son, that's 15 Kyles right there he's responsible by, give or take, 1965 or earlier. With exponential growth of Kyles ...

I believe the Jays tried this with Anthony Alford. Though they took him in the 3rd round.

I'm not sure who is crazier. The guy drafted 9th who is going to play a sport likely to injure him as an amateur or the team that blew their first round pick on a guy who doesn't want to play their sport.

Maybe they think the 2019 draft is stronger than 2018. If you're going to punt the pick, might as well do it with a football player.

If they were looking for a punter, its too bad Vince Coleman wasn't in this draft.

One of the talking heads compared the Pirates' first-rounder to Darin Erstad. Does that count?

Who knows where he'll be in the fall, but this is certainly the right thing to say to open negotiations.

The Pirates have a salary cap, the Sooners do not. My guess is that it is as simple as that.

@15: Ha! True.

Eh. No one makes real money in college sports except the coaches and administrators. That's why it's such a scam.

$4.5M is nothing to sneeze at.

Not really. Vince Coleman is 56 years old.

Julio Franco wants to know what the big deal is.

Generalissimo Franco is...still dead.
   21. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 06, 2018 at 01:17 PM (#5687034)
John Franco is enjoying retired life in Manhattan.

James Franco is probably stoned with Seth Rogen somewhere.

   24. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 06, 2018 at 01:35 PM (#5687053)
Apparently Franco-American has been phased out and Spaghetti-O's are branded Campbell's now.

With exponential growth of Kyles...

By 2100, everyone will be named Kyle: men, women, children, pets, household plants. Approximately 50 million people will have Kyle as both a first and last name, and they will live together in the technologically-advanced African nation of Kylandia. (Also, all radio stations will be re-named KYLE, even if they are east of the Mississippi.)

Did the A's draft any signability falls in later rounds? I'm wondering if there's any such evidence that they aren't really intending to sign Murray.

They've already agreed to terms.
