Omar Vizquel gets chance to tie the Babe at Yankee Stadium

Plus starting Omar Vizquel and his 36 OPS+ gives the Yankees a good chance of breaking any tie situations with the O’s.

Omar Vizquel does not get to play much anymore. But his manager will certainly let him play when the Toronto Blue Jays visit Yankee Stadium this week.

“I’d be crazy not to,” manager John Farrell said.

The 45-year-old Vizquel had two hits, including an RBI single that snapped a scoreless tie in the Blue Jays’ 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox. He needs one more hit to tie George Herman Ruth—yes, the Babe—for 41st on the all-time hits list.

To see Vizquel match Ruth’s hit total of 2,873 in Yankee Stadium “would be very fitting,” Farrell said.

Vizquel plans to retire after this season, capping a 24-year career. The three-game series that starts Tuesday night will be his last in Yankee Stadium.

“Not even in my wildest dreams I was going to think that you can bring the name of Babe Ruth right next to mine,” Vizquel said.

Would there be two more different players with similar hit totals (over 1000 hits)?

two more different players with similar hit totals

A quick look shows Rick Burleson and Darryl Strawberry with the same hit total. Also Tim Foli / Larry Doby, and Smoky Burgess / Terry Moore. Not as different, I reckon.

Adam Dunn & David Eckstein both currently have 1,414 hits.

Dave Kingman has exactly as man hits as Ivy Olson. Olson his 13 homers in over 1,500 games and was a defensive specialist.

Richie Ashburn/Manny Ramirez are both at 2,574.

Josh Vitters has the same number of hits as Mike Mussina.

You and me both, Omar. You and me both. Yeesh.

Omar will probably drop out of the top 1500 in MVP shares after this year.

Its been just a treat listening to Pat Tabler and Buck Martinez talk about how great a hitter Omar has obviously been over his career to have as many hits as the Babe.

And it really is hard to overstate how special it would be for Vizquel to accomplish this feat in a completly different stadium than The Babe. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

In other news, Denard Span is just 2 away from matching Mel Ott in stolen bases!

I thought he was going to tie a babe. Which can be exciting, if done right.
