Gee spins gem in unforgettable Majors debut

WASHINGTON—Considering his injury history, Dillon Gee was thrilled simply to be in a Mets uniform Tuesday evening at Nationals Park.

He certainly wasn’t anticipating this.

Gee took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his Major League debut, ultimately settling for seven innings of two-hit ball in a 4-1 Mets victory over the Nationals.

Willie Harris broke up the no-hit bid with a homer leading off the sixth.

Aside from that hiccup, Gee was plenty sharp, striking out the side in the fourth inning. Starting in place of injured lefty Johan Santana, the 24-year-old rookie walked two batters before allowing a hit.

Also got his first hit and RBI. Not bad for a guy drafted in the 21st round.

Between him and Misch, the Mets should have the #5 slot pretty solidly covered next year. Both guys throw strikes, which has been rare amongst Mets pitchers.

The first time I saw Gee I thought "this is a big league pitcher" then I kept reading that he wasn't a prospect. I couldn't see why. Nice contrast from watching Valdes, Igarashi and Ollie the day before.

Santana, Pelfrey, Niese, Dickey, Mejia/Misch/Gee for next year's rotation. I'd expect Niese and Dickey to fall back from what they did this year. And I think Pelfrey is going to settle in as a 3/4 starter, not a 1/2. All in all a deep, but middling rotation.

Misch isn't a very good pitcher. Just too hittable.

I have probably been the biggest supporter of Gee around here but let's not get ahead of ourselves after one good outing especially considering he did give a dinger, which is something that will plague him as a big leaguer.

In addition, the Met starting pitching has been surprisingly good at throwing strikes this season. Santana, Dickey, Pelfrey, and Niese all throw strikes and Takahashi did so when he was in the rotation.

Gee also coughed up a 4.96 ERA in Buffalo- despite striking out 9 per 9- it looks like he may have a BABIP problemo himself

I think Misch is fine as a no. 5 starter/long bullpen guy. He doesn't get enough swings and misses, and doesn't K enough guys, but he's a Jimmy Key lefty so he can still survive with a good infield behind him.

I don't see either Gee being more than a 4.00ish ERA guy, but he looks like he could be consistent and can work deep into games. That's valuable and would fill a need on this team (much like Figueroa would have.)

We're not really disagreeing, but I would keep Gee and Misch on the 2011 roster, Gee as the frontline no. 5 starter candidate and Misch as the 12th guy in the bullpen.

It's the gopher balls. His HR/FB rate in 2010 is a remarkable 12.3%; his FIP w the Bisons was 3.75. He's a much better pitcher than Misch, and should have been up as soon as the Mets were out of it, say in late July, getting starts towards being slotting into the rotation in April, 2011. These are the Mets, though, so who the hell knows what they're thinking. Maybe they have something crazy going on like Mejia inked in as the 5th starter for 2011.

At any rate, Gee should sit for the rest of the year. Coming off a torn labrum 160+ innings is just fine. I hope they don't push him.
