MLB.tv, which worked fine all spring training, is jumpy as anything during the first.

The Giants have a different Opening Day left fielder for the 13th consecutive season. That's pretty amazing.

Well, I'm ready for Opening Day. I have tickets to see Perfume in two weeks. I haven't listened to their music for a while, but I've got six of their albums on my iPod, so I'll watch the three ESPN games with the sound off, and refamiliarize myself with their songs...

In the first year A.G. (After Goldschmidt), the No. 3 batter for the Diamondbacks on Opening Day is Wilmer Flores.

I can't watch the game, but it looks like they are making contact on deGrom. I wonder how his stuff looks.

I may actually be more interested in the Mets this year than my Yankees. Cano helps.
   19. Lassus Posted: March 28, 2019 at 01:27 PM (#5826191)
Hopefully deGrom's first inning was nerves, because they definitely were hitting the ball.

Very much yes. The final out from Zimmerman was a rocket.

Scherzer definitely looks more like he's in midseason form, the home run notwithstanding.
   21. JJ1986 Posted: March 28, 2019 at 01:30 PM (#5826195)
Max looks like he's going to be able to throw nine innings today.

It's not unusual for a player to let down after he signs a big contract. Could be a long five years...

So this will be a record year for Ks league-wide, I assume.

DeGrom destroys the 6-8 hitters! (Scherzer hitting 8th) DESTROYS them! WS here we come!

   28. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 01:40 PM (#5826208)
10 K's through the first 3.5 cumulative innings..

Good god, Luke Voit.

Monster shot to CF, following hard opposite field singles by Judge and Stanton, and Andujar followed Voit with a warning track fly. Not a bad start.

Mets get a break when Victor Robles holds at third on a groundball and then starts running (into an out) after it's thrown to second. I don't think the Mets were turning two the normal way.
   31. CrosbyBird Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:00 PM (#5826219)
There's no way they could have gotten the runner at first.
   32. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:16 PM (#5826227)
Nice start for the revamped Redbirds: three up, three down, all strikeouts against Jhoulys Chacin.
   33. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:18 PM (#5826228)
By my reckoning that's 22 K's now in 15.2 pitched innings so far today..
   34. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:24 PM (#5826233)
Miles Mikolas cruises through the bottom of the first in efficient style, 11 pitches, "only" 1 strikeout. The laggard!
   35. Baldrick Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:26 PM (#5826237)
17 strikeouts through 5 innings in Washington. I mean, it's Scherzer and deGrom so it's more fun than if it were a parade of anonymous relievers. But...ugh.
   36. JJ1986 Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:26 PM (#5826238)
Mets trivia question is two Mets who hit a grand slam on opening day. One is Collin Cowgill who probably had 4 RBIs his whole Mets career.

The relaxed Kolten Wong bops their first homer!

2-0 Birds

Wong and Bader give the Cardinals a nice 3-0 lead, 7th and 8th place hitters hitting homeruns..

Early season tootblan by Washington in a way that helps the Mets makes me optimistic.

First post on facebook from a friend of mine about this season is complaining about how bad the Cardinals offense was in spring training and afraid that they will continue that performance going forward.

Am I being my typical fanboy to think that the Cardinals probably have a top three offense in the NL going into the season?
   45. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:44 PM (#5826256)
Trea Turner has stolen 3 bases, and its only the 6th inning.

Bases loaded nobody out for Luke Voit...

Am I being my typical fanboy to think that the Cardinals probably have a top three offense in the NL going into the season?

I've stopped paying attention to spring training performances by the "regulars" as having any predictive value for the real games.

Too many years I've seen them lighting it up down in Florida and then they begin the year in an offensive funk, and vice versa.

   48. The Yankee Clapper Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:48 PM (#5826265)
3 BB & a HBP lead to Yankees 5th run, still no one out. Andújar SF makes it 6-1. Orioles look to be on the way to a difficult season.
   49. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:48 PM (#5826266)
Yankees have scored two runs this inning, still have two on, and haven't had a base hit...
   50. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:49 PM (#5826267)
I didn't realize Goldschmidt struck out 173 times last year, but he's on pace to shatter that in 2019..
   51. Dale Sams Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:50 PM (#5826268)
Im afraid by the time the Sox get to play the Orioles, they will have converted Davis to astarter where he can do less harm.

Is it me, or has "Birds" always meant the Orioles? The Cardinals are the "Cards" or the "Red-birds".

I pay attention mostly to reports than anything else, and the last few games of the season when they are really trying. But they have done some basic studies on predictive performance of spring stats, and for the most part outside of extreme performances, it really doesn't tell you much about how the players will play going forward. I guess the only real data to gather is whether a guy might be ready for the leap to the majors, but beyond that, I don't care how Goldschmidt or Carpenter etc... performed in spring training. Especially guys who's tool includes the ability to walk, because you don't go to spring training to work on walks, you go there to get the kinks out of your swing.
   55. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:51 PM (#5826272)
Could this Met game be more "deGrom-ish"? Two freaking hits.

deGrom needs to throw shut-outs to get a win.
   56. JJ1986 Posted: March 28, 2019 at 02:52 PM (#5826273)

He got handshakes and Lugo's still throwing.

I've used it for the Cardinals almost all my life, but I prefer Redbirds or Cards personally, but I'm not giving the Bird moniker to the Browns...

Scherzer still in? Kinda surprising even though he's dealing.

Lugo got them through the 7th. Familia for the 8th, Diaz for the 9th and we can have a happy recap.

I would like at least a couple more runs, though.

Is it me, or has "Birds" always meant the Orioles? The Cardinals are the "Cards" or the "Red-birds".

I grew up in St. Louis where everyone (well, a lot of people, maybe not everyone) used "Birds." "How bout those Birds?" "How'd the Birds do?"

   66. salvomania Posted: March 28, 2019 at 03:09 PM (#5826290)
Those back-to-back homers by Wong and Bader are the only Cardinal hits through four... looks the spring training malaise has carried through to the regular season!

Red Sox Notes @SoxNotes
This will be the first time in franchise history the Red Sox have 9+ players make consecutive Opening Day starts for the club (Sale, Vázquez, Núñez, Devers, Bogaerts, Benintendi, Bradley, Betts, Martinez). No team has done that since the 2011-12 Yankees (source: @EliasSports).

Interesting tidbit.
