Omnichatter 4-22-2013

Today, we will discuss games like A’s vs. Red Sox, Cards vs. Nats, Jays vs. O’s, Yankees vs. Rays, D-Backs vs. Giants and, perhaps best of all (going by record), Braves vs. Rockies.

Or we might just discuss Doctor Who, whether feathered dinosaurs look cool or stupid, and whether a Oriole could beat a Blue Jay in a actual fight… because BBTF is WEIRD.

Time for the A's to get back home to sunny and warm Oakland and face some birds and other flying creatures ! Not saying it will get easier though ! sighs

This is the first time this season that Dan Haren has made it into the 6th inning, and with runners at 2nd and 1st with 0 outs he might not be much longer for this game.

The other "before they were famous" person I can remember from Doctor Who is that Andrew Garfield from Amazing Spider-Man and The Social Network showed up as depression-era New Yorker fighting Daleks.

Yadi, the best catcher in baseball, gives the Cardinals a lead..

If clutch exists, yadi has figured out the proper sacrifices needed to receive it's gifts.

Jeez, this game (Orioles-Blue Jays) is rocketing. Bottom of the sixth already.
   106. Esoteric Posted: April 22, 2013 at 08:37 PM (#4422720)
I am feeling really pessimistic about the Nationals right now. Can't seem to score against decent teams, can't seem to field the ball without puking all over themselves, can't even pitch all that well.

Rum for Jobu.

Oh, and sacrificing the live chicken before this game. That's what got him that base hit.

Haren? More like Has-Been.

Well, there goes Haren's bid for a complete game.

Chris Young can't be called up soon enough.

Having to be seen in public with that neck tattoo seems sacrifice enough.

Oh, and Simon Pegg too... but I think by then he'd already gotten a cult following. And apparently basically everyone in England wants to be on Doctor Who to impress their children or grandchildren.

Orioles have a chance to get a run here....

Base-loaded GIDP.... Jon Jay having a rough game/week/season.

C'mon a dp..we have only scored one run. Our pitching is going to allow a minimum of one run in the immediate following half inning.

Simon Pegg was awesome in that episode...the episode itself was only good, but Pegg was his usual fantastic self. Here is hoping that Abrams finds a role for him in the new Star Wars movie.

The Nationals, respecting his awesome power, intentionally walk noted slugger Pete Kozma.

I think the problem with the Cardinals is that they have a player with two last names and two players with only first names. They need to get that squared away to regain some nomenclatural balance.

Piniella and the whatsisname blaming the WBC for Rodney's ER total so far this year. "No doubt".

Even if true, I seem to remember Rodney saying something along the lines that he doesn't give a crap.

Bases loaded nobody out and we don't score....this is the Cardinals of a few years ago. I'm too spoiled with us scoring runs at will with two outs.

Who has two last names..Trevor Rosenthal>

Man, Nats wriggle out of a bases-loaded nobody-out jam without any of 'em scoring....

The only wriggling the Nats did was get Haren the h3ll off the mound. Don't worry, once he hands the ball to "closer" Storen it will be shades of NLDS Game 5 all over again. This one is as good as the Cards' right now, they're just going through the formality of playing it to satisfy the sponsors and the players' union.

Shelby Miller. That's two surnames together right there.

I forgot about Lance Lynn. It seems they have an even bigger problem in the first name department.

   129. Gamingboy Posted: April 22, 2013 at 08:51 PM (#4422755)
It's kind of weird watching "Arrow", with John Barrowman and Alex Kingston showing up on a relatively regular basis. I keep wondering if Tennant will show up as the Clock King or some other C-List Batman villain.

Shelby sounds like the name for a dog...

But the Royals did sweep them in a doubleheader yesterday!

That would be great. Of course pretty much anything Tenant is in, is going to be great. (There was a really weird version of Hamlet that he was in)

Cardinals are putting runners on base, but wiping them out with tons of dps.

Felix has 5 Ks through two innings. He's already lost the perfect game or no-hitter, but 20 Ks is still very much in reach.
   137. boteman is not here 'til October Posted: April 22, 2013 at 08:58 PM (#4422765)
Zimmerman would've had that...and then with his tender shoulder hamstring thrown it into RF.

I already tried this topic in [24].

I tried explaining the cultural concept of Dr Who to the wife in between eps of the Spies of Warsaw miniseries. It wasn't really working out. I tried Bond films as an analogy since she's wild about those, felt that got somewhat close to the heart of the matter.
   143. cardsfanboy Posted: April 22, 2013 at 09:05 PM (#4422774)
Let Miller finish this inning. Do not bring in Kelly until we score 5 more runs so that he can keep it close.

Nats TV just put up Kelly's BA splits: equally poor against RHB and LHB. I see what you mean.

Don't worry, the Nats can still counter with Drew Storen. No lead is safe!

Moore's final (I'm assuming) line: 7 IP, 8 Ks, 2 hits, 3 BBs. So not unreal, but he was never in trouble other than Cano's bomb. One of these days he is going to start K'ing 10 guys a game.

King Felix still at 5 K's through 2 and 2/3s. Bummer.

Has there been ANY explanation put out there for Sabathia's missing velocity? He seems to have settled in at 89-91, which is nearly 3 MPH down from 2012 and a solid 4+ down from 2011. He still looks like he'll be a good pitcher, but I find it hard to believe a guy can lose that much velocity without some kind of underlying issue.

Didn't he hurt his elbow last year? And Girardi has been riding him into the ground for years now. If I had to guess, I would bet it is probably some lingering elbow issue caused by throwing too many 120 pitch games when he doesn't have his best stuff.

Dumb AB from LaRoche. Guy just finished walking Harper, and he swings at a first pitch outside at the knees? Hes lucky he didn't roll over that right to second for a 4-6-3 DP.

I was going to say something similar.... I have never understood people swinging at the first pitch with a guy who is struggling to find the plate...of course on the next batter Rosenthal had no problem finding the plate so I deleted my comment before posting it :)

@ZuckermanCSN: Then Desmond takes 98 mph right down the middle to kill #Nats rally. Still 3-2 heading to 9th. Storen entering. Kozma leading off.

Oh well, what else is on?

Mujica and Choate(in his proper role)

I think Kelly and Rosenthal should be good, but haven't found consistency yet. And I love Salas's movement but he just hasn't figured out how to get that to work for him.

Nice play...Pfffft.

I saw that on average 5 or 6 million people watch DW live every week in the UK. That's somewhere between 15 to 20 percent of the UK's population. The most watched drama in the United State in the 2011-2012 season was NCIS, which averaged about 19.5 million viewers. That's "only" about 6.21% of the US population. So, basically, adjusting for population sizes, Doctor Who is more than twice as popular in the UK than the most-watched drama show in the United States. Heck, it's twice as popular in the UK as Sunday Night Football is in the United States.

(Full disclosure: I have no idea how many channels British cable systems get, so admittedly it could be comparing apples and oranges.)

1-1 in the top of the ninth. Johnson on for the Orioles.

   180. cardsfanboy Posted: April 22, 2013 at 09:51 PM (#4422839)
I'm thinking the search for a closer is over now. We've latched onto the guy who probably should have been the first choice all along. Mind you I defended the Boggs decision because of his performance last year, but throughout his career he hasn't been such a hot reliever, so you have to think that some of his performance last year was fluky.
   181. cardsfanboy Posted: April 22, 2013 at 09:54 PM (#4422843)
Well, obviously he has it, whereas Boggs does not.

Problem is too many people in St Louis were saying that Mujica doesn't have it. "Just look at his numbers in his career in the 9th inning."

Everyone wants Rosenthal to be the closer, but I wanted to see how he performed this year after his post season heroics last year and the rest of the league gets a scouting report.
