It's about f@cking time, Eso. America has been waiting!

Meanwhile, Cryce Harper made Brian McCann smile from afar.

Jordan Zimmermann looks ridiculously sharp for a guy getting over the flu. Well, except for just nailing Heyward in the legs there.
   3. Esoteric Posted: April 04, 2014 at 01:52 PM (#4679362)
You know, I dunno if Gamingboy is still around to post these/set them up on a regular basis, but if not then I wouldn't mind taking over for awhile at least, PROVIDED someone in charge is willing to grant me a set of 'keys' (limited ones, even) just to make sure that they go up on time. I know things got completely cocked up by the Burstnet Debacle, but I'd hate for the lovely tradition of Omnichatters to die.

BTW, has anyone seen Harveys lately?
   4. Bourbon Samurai in America Posted: April 04, 2014 at 01:56 PM (#4679367)
Hello from nats park. Zimmerman is dealing today. I wouldn't mind scoring a run before this becomes an official game
   5. Bourbon Samurai in America Posted: April 04, 2014 at 01:56 PM (#4679369)
Harvey's is fine, at least as of this morning

Why are random starters bolded?
   8. thetailor Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:09 PM (#4679390)
What's the bold?
   9. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:10 PM (#4679391)
I wouldn't mind seeing "insanely locked in" Justin Upton come around.
   10. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:12 PM (#4679394)
Jordan Zimmermann is fairly dealing in D.C.

Hale is not too shabby, although certain Nats are helping him out from time to time.
   11. Juan Uribe Marching and Chowder Society Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:14 PM (#4679399)
WHY IS ERIC STULTS NOT BOLDED?!?
   12. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:17 PM (#4679403)
It's nice to see the Braves are already in the Nats heads, to the point where they'll flip starters to get Zimmerman into this series.
   13. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:18 PM (#4679406)
JWerth never took the bat off his shoulder and just struck out looking on 1 strike and 3 balls inside. :-/
   14. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:20 PM (#4679409)
Clearly, the starters whose names are in boldface have something in common. But you must guess what it is.
   15. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:23 PM (#4679411)
Some observations on the Nats game in D.C.

1) Adam LaRoche moves like a pregnant yak dying mountain lion
2) Justin Upton not good in LF
3) George F. Will sighting behind 3B

more to follow
   16. Esoteric Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:27 PM (#4679416)
The bolding is merely for starters whose starts strike me as being of particular interest. Zimmermann in his first start of the year (and coming off the flu), Tanaka for obvious reasons, and Sanchez because he's just a fantastic pitcher.

You got a problem with it, then hey -- you're free to submit your own Omnichatter thread. Or would you rather I not have done this?
   17. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:28 PM (#4679417)
GATTITUDE!

Replacement McCann goes deep. I hope Sam is happy now.

Zimmermann in his first start of the year (and coming off the flu)

There was no flu.

So Yasiel Puig has been benched by Don Mattingly today for "tardiness."

Kid's got problems, I don't care how talented he is.

Zimmerman was sick so he got pushed back a day
   22. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:30 PM (#4679422)
Two three bunt K's from Braves rookie starters so far this year. (Wood, now Hale.) Somebody needs some work in the cages.
   23. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:31 PM (#4679423)
Zimmerman was sick so he got pushed back a day

No, Zimmerman was flipped to start the Braves series because the Nats wanted him against the Braves rather than the Mess.

flu like influenza or "flu" like stomach virus?
   25. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:34 PM (#4679427)
Stupid play, Andrelton. You don't run with Jason up. You run with BJUpton up.
   26. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:35 PM (#4679429)
"Flu-like symptoms" whatever that means. He doesn't look all that bad, but definitely looks a little worse for the wear.

He's getting everything up here in the 5th so I doubt he's long for this game.

Then Lobaton shows that he might not be just a backup catcher after all.
   27. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:41 PM (#4679432)
Betting on a challenge in D.C.

So glad they took 2 whole minutes to decide to challenge a judgment call.
   28. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:46 PM (#4679437)
Somebody with video access tell me how badly JUpton screwed up that defensive play in LF.
   29. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:47 PM (#4679439)
Ball went beneath the padding and stopped. NOT stuck, just sitting there. JUpton threw hands up as Desmond rounded bases. THEN he grabbed the ball and threw it in.

And now we see how replay speeds up the game. Fredi appealed, upheld, now Matty arguing the reviewed call. Joy.

Final ruling: Nats' run comes off the scoreboard, Desmond goes back to 2B with a double on a review of the f@cking GROUND RULES.
   30. Rickey! is all out of bubblegum Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:48 PM (#4679442)
? They upheld the HR call and now Williams is complaining about winning the challenge?!

Why does Jim Joyce hate baseball???

Relax. The Nationals are putting on should be checking into a baserunning clinic. I recommend the one operated by Livan Hernandez.

   34. boteman asks Where's My Ring? Posted: April 04, 2014 at 02:58 PM (#4679454)
Harper should've thrown his hands up and given up on the ball just like JUpton. Fair is fair.

While they're "honoring" the U.S. by singing GBA in D.C., if a play does not NEED to be reviewed by replay or if replay would yield even less evidence than on-field observation, is the crew chief obligated to use the replay system once a manager initiates a challenge? Or can the umps simply inform the manager on the spot of their decision and let it go at that?

@ZuckermanCSN: Just to tie up a loose end: Ground-rule doubles are challengeable/reviewable. For that matter, so are home runs.

Rain delay and I guess Ausmus didn't want Sanchez to go back out, plus Smyly's start got pushed back because of the rainout on Wednesday so maybe killing 2 birds with one stone.

Miguel Cabrera got his 2,000 career hit on a 2 run home run. Tigers just pounding the Orioles today.

Pablo Sandoval and Hunter pence are both 0 for 1 with a walk.... in the first inning... 6 runs! batted around!

   62. dr. scott Posted: April 04, 2014 at 04:52 PM (#4679541)
I do not like Mike morse... Ryu on the ropes and he swings at the first two not so great pitches. hes a horror show in the outfield also, but honestly, the giants have not had the best defense period these first few games.... maybe its in the water.
   63. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: April 04, 2014 at 04:53 PM (#4679542)
Yeah, Ryu didn't have it today. After two starts the local media was hyping up the new and improved Ryu so it seems fitting this would happen.

So Yasiel Puig has been benched by Don Mattingly today for "tardiness."

Kid's got problems, I don't care how talented he is.

the problem with punishing him for every transgression (which is the tact that the dodgers have apparently taken) is that if the behaviour doesn't stop, the severity of the punishment will inevitably increase disproportionately to the severity of the transgressions.

and let's not forget that mattingly owes his job to puig. without puig hitting like a madman fresh out of AAA, mattingly would have been fired because his team was a lifeless mess full of albatross contracts. in a just world, mattingly would be on his knees thanking puig for saving his career before every game.
   75. dr. scott Posted: April 04, 2014 at 06:20 PM (#4679607)
Actually Hanley Ramirez hit better than Puig for longer and it was his introduction into the lineup that coincided with the dodgers finally starting to win again last year. Puig came a week or so later and helped quite a bit as well.

Detail of the batted ball that somehow became permanently stuck with epoxy under the LF wall at Nationals Park, resulting in a review that recalled Ian Desmond's inside-the-park HR back to a double.

Another view of the same ball.

Fredi Gonzalez came out to discuss it with the umpires for about 1.5 minutes, then they reviewed it for some strange reason, then of course Matty Williams had to go out to have his say. All calm and cordial, but a big waste of time because as soon as JUpton held up his hands it became a dead ball and Desmond should have been awarded a double. Since they did not stop play with all the evidence right before their tired eyes it's logical to assume that they did not recognize Upton's signal while Desmond charged home, so it should stand as an ITPHR.

So they basically reviewed either the ground rules of Nats Park or the major league rulebook or else a judgment call, none of which fall under the replay purview. Then there's this: The official ruling on Ian Desmond20's HR, overturned to a double, was that the ball was lodged in the padding of the wall. Rule 7.05(f)

Just a puzzling play all the way around.

I think Puig's attitude shows that he agrees with you on this point. Mind you, it wasn't Puig that carried the team, I think Hanley's return was as big, if not a bigger factor in the Dodgers success(Puig joined the team June 3rd, Hanley returned June 4th). At some point in time, you have to expect the same professionalism from everyone on the team. As it stands, if Hanley and Kershaw can abide by the rules, no reason for Puig and others to not.

The Jays commentators said he got his cleat stuck in the turf and either twisted his ankle or hurt his hamstring. He tried to stay in the game, but a few pitches later he motioned to the bench and was taken out.

In the early going, I'm going to expect that this will happen fairly frequently. Just read the rules again, and there is no reason that play should have been reviewed. The closest is the Non–Home Run Boundary Calls but this rule clearly states it's only about fair/foul and not ground rules.

In the Mets-Reds game they were just discussing pitchers getting hit by line drives (apparently Mejia was hit on the leg or something, but was okay), and they showed what happened to Chapman. Yikes. I hadn't seen it before, and kind of wish I didn't now.

I'm scared to look at the Chapman play.

Speaking of Mets-Reds, Duda just hit his second homer of the game.

Alvarez picking up where he left off last year, 2 homeruns this game against the Cardinals.

Miller gave up a homer to Travis Ishikawa?

Not as bad as Cole giving up a single to Miller.... (which Carpenter promptly took advantage of by hitting a homerun to make the score 3-2)
