Over the past 365 days, Brian Dozier has more homers than:

Mike Trout
Joey Votto
Robinson Cano
Evan Longoria
Jayson Werth
Justin Upton

...among others.

He's pretty good.
   2. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: May 19, 2014 at 11:18 AM (#4709453)
Dozier is 8th in WAR for AL position players. I think at this point he's at minimum an established minor star, no? The HR's are nice and he's really increased his walk rate to go along with it. How's his glove?

1. Donaldson (OAK) 3.5
2. Trout (LAA) 2.8
3. Ramirez (CHW) 2.0
4. Gardner (NYY) 2.0
Bautista (TOR) 2.0
6. Moss (OAK) 1.8
7. Gordon (KCR) 1.8
8. Dozier (MIN) 1.8
9. Kinsler (DET) 1.8
10. Kendrick (LAA) 1.7

#2-- Very solid to my eye. (I'm obviously and hopelessly biased, of course.) He came up as a shortstop, so I guess you could say he plays second base about as well as a guy who didn't quite have the range to make it at shortstop would play the position?

Riffing off of 1 and 2...with his three extra base hits yesterday, Brandon Moss now leads MLB in Isolated Power (ISO) since the start of the 2012 season (min. 500 PA):

Rk              Player  ISO   PA
1         Brandon Moss .281  970
2          Chris Davis .280 1363
3    Giancarlo Stanton .279 1200
4       Miguel Cabrera .274 1520
5          David Ortiz .269 1163
6    Edwin Encarnacion .267 1459
7        Jose Bautista .259 1128
8           Ryan Braun .253 1046
9      Troy Tulowitzki .247  889
10           Adam Dunn .240 1403

Moss had an ISO of .146 in 749 career PA before 2012.

Yeah, Brandon Moss...what the hell?
   6. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 19, 2014 at 12:11 PM (#4709497)
Yeah, Brandon Moss...what the hell?

I'm an A's fan, and I've been thinking this since July 2012: I still cannot believe they are this good, and yet I am very happy they are winning so many games.
(they've been on a 100-win pace over nearly two years now)

EDIT: also, Josh Donaldson IS your 2014 AL MVP.
   7. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 19, 2014 at 02:10 PM (#4709597)
The Royals have committed 28 errors this year, and 11 of them have been by their pitchers. That seems an enormously high percentage--is it?
   8. boteman Posted: May 19, 2014 at 06:31 PM (#4709776)
@joecapMARLINS: Marlins Miguel Tejada signed to a minor league contract.

I'm not sure about the syntax, but Miguel Tejada might want to be the next Julio Franco.
Born: May 25, 1974 in Bani, Peravia, Dominican Republic (Age 39.359)
   9. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:04 PM (#4709786)
Given that Tejada is the dope who once paid for his steroids with a personal check, he's got a pretty decent shot to become the first guy to get himself banned for life under the new drug agreement.
   10. PreservedFish Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:17 PM (#4709790)
I always thought that the 1998 A's were Beane's signature team. Is that the team that had Saenz, Jaha, Berroa, etc etc, the AAAA beer league softball team? But what he has now is clearly his greatest triumph. It's the team that the Moneyball A's were supposed to be.
   11. Al Kaline Trio Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:17 PM (#4709791)
So Jean Segura just bunted Carlos Gomez to 2B in the top of the 1st inning with no outs. I wonder if he was bunting for a hit.
   12. DA Baracus Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:22 PM (#4709794)
Wily Peralta is a pretty cool name, perhaps even more so since his name is actually Wily.
   13. Al Kaline Trio Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:23 PM (#4709795)
#10 You are correct that this is his best work yet. Even his free agent signings have been good (minus that SS from Japan but he was quickly replaced at a low cost). The A's even had extra money this last offseason to go for a super bullpen to round out the roster.

I'm thinking this coaching staff Melvin, Young and Chili are by far the best personnel he has found for on the field coaches.
   14. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:27 PM (#4709796)
Uh oh. That's the kind of error that usually triggers total nuclear meltdown...
   15. PreservedFish Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:29 PM (#4709797)
Everyone else sees it as Wile E. Peralta, right?
   16. Fred Lynn Nolan Ryan Sweeney Agonistes Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:30 PM (#4709798)
The A's have a rep right now of a team where guys feel very lucky to land. There is absolutely a lightning-in-a-bottle feeling to the A's this last couple of years: remember, June 30 2012, they were 37-42 and 13 games out of first place, and since then they've played at a 100-win pace for nearly two full seasons.
And, yes, the players seem very happy (and productive) with this coaching staff.
   17. DA Baracus Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:30 PM (#4709799)
Two walks and a passed ball and Chris Johnson swings at the first two pitches.

Everyone else sees it as Wile E. Peralta, right?

*slow clap*

Wow, well done.
   19. boteman Posted: May 19, 2014 at 07:39 PM (#4709804)
Billy Hamilton took a sightseeing tour of CF tracking down a fly ball just now.
   20. Brian White Posted: May 19, 2014 at 08:10 PM (#4709828)
Khris Davis went after a Freddie Freeman home run that barely snuck over the fence. The ball hit his glove, and knocked his glove off as the ball went over the wall. A fan had to retrieve his glove and throw it back to him.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the Moneyball movie. A team acquires the reputation of just being flat out smarter than everyone else, then goes after a specific player who is up-and-coming or down-and-out, a journeyman or a bit player, that player probably feels pretty great. "If these guys want me, then I must be something special." I have no idea if that translates into on-field performance, but winning ballgames sure doesn't hurt that line of thinking.
   22. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 08:36 PM (#4709837)
McLouth would suck in the Deadball Era. Rarely in history has such an unproductive hitter gotten this much playing time at a corner outfield spot.

I bet they also have prettier girlfriends too, which helps a guy's batting numbers, according to Moneyball.
   24. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: May 19, 2014 at 08:46 PM (#4709841)
KC native Scott Carroll allowed the first five Royals - the worst offensive team in baseball - to reach base, and all five scored. That's very generous of the local boy.
   25. PreservedFish Posted: May 19, 2014 at 08:50 PM (#4709843)
Kluber turned into a great pitcher pretty quick. Also, Autocorrect suggested that Kluber was really "mulberry."

His father smelled of elderberries.

I'm trying to watch the Tiger @ Indians game on the Tiger broadcast. There is some damn Clevelander that is yelling obnoxiously constantly. I think I am going to have to change games.

Do the people doing the Tiger broadcast not hear this jackwagon? Can't they filter it somehow?
   28. boteman Posted: May 19, 2014 at 09:09 PM (#4709848)
Switch to radio audio?
   29. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 09:30 PM (#4709861)
It just suddenly occurred to me for the first time that I no longer have a mini heart attack on every ground ball to third base.

It's a feeling I've been used to having for so long now that it feels weird that it's gone.
   30. morineko Posted: May 19, 2014 at 09:41 PM (#4709867)
It's the team that the Moneyball A's were supposed to be.

It's got all of the arm injuries, all right.
   31. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 19, 2014 at 09:44 PM (#4709868)
Who is this guy playing first for the Indians? Aguilar? He looks like he's about 270 pounds and he's hitting eighth?
   32. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 09:59 PM (#4709873)
Alright Hairston!
   33. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:03 PM (#4709877)
The shift backfires on Cleveland as the ball gets hit to the 2B, who throws it to the 3B who's covering 2B, who drops it.
   34. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:08 PM (#4709880)
Small milestone tonight: Ryan Doumit just hit his 100th career home run. Good for him.
   35. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:12 PM (#4709885)
Opposite field home run for Justin Upton. When he's right....

I'll also say this for Justin: he does a little strut when he thinks he's hit a home run, and I don't believe I've ever seen it burn him. He has a 100 percent success rate with that strut. And quite a few of those home runs have barely sneaked over the fence.
   36. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:28 PM (#4709894)
Lyle Overbay to pitch for the Brewers!

The Braves are up 9-3. That seems like the closest game in which I can ever remember a position player taking the mound.
   37. morineko Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:32 PM (#4709895)
All those homers were coming off a low-A pitcher who is inexplicably in the Brewers bullpen. (Rule 5)

Lyle Overbay in for Milwaukee to get the last out of the 8th.
   38. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 10:39 PM (#4709898)
Ok, the good relievers are gone. Lets end this thing boys.
   39. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: May 19, 2014 at 11:07 PM (#4709907)
Geez, this Wang guy on the Brewers already had a 12.86 ERA. Now he's given up 5 homers and 15 runs in 7.2 innings. How long before he's back with the State College Spikes?
   40. boteman Posted: May 19, 2014 at 11:12 PM (#4709910)
Some crazy baseball in the Districk if you can stomach it. Game was about to be over, but Phillips makes a great diving catch to end the inning.

Geez, this Wang guy on the Brewers already had a 12.86 ERA.

Huh. I would have bet money it was the reanimated corpse of Chien-Ming Wang, but I'm surprised to find out it's a different pitcher named Wang who currently sucks.
   42. Joey B. Posted: May 19, 2014 at 11:26 PM (#4709914)
Holy moly, what a game. One of the best so far this season.
   43. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: May 19, 2014 at 11:37 PM (#4709918)
The Reds are 2 for 23 with runners in scoring position tonight.

Unreal, these defensive plays.
   45. boteman Posted: May 20, 2014 at 12:11 AM (#4709934)
The Reds defense.

That is all.

And, of course, I just remembered Brent Mayne pitching against (and shutting down!) the Braves in a tied extra innings affair at Coors Field in 2000.

So, the status quo, basically. They do play some D though.
