How many runs will the Tigers score this week. Last week 18 in 76 innings if I did the math correctly.

That's one more run than the Orioles scored on home runs alone in their first two games against the Cardinals.

Keith Hernandez just said that he had the ability to guide the ball into the hole and not to the 2B. Maybe he should have used this ability to guide his career BA over .300.

Who are some realistic options that could clear waivers that would be an upgrade at DH for the Royals while Hosmer is out? Would Dunn or Willingham clear waivers? Pass on Rios, Byrd, please.
   5. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 04:20 PM (#4768797)
List of players who have cleared waivers, according to mlbtraderumors

To be honest I would have thought there would have been a lot more that had cleared waivers. I don't think that they have updated their list. (Kemp, Ethier, Crawford, Gardner, and Prado is pretty much all they have listed, and I find that to be a suspiciously low total. I find it hard to believe that the Phillies haven't tried to put Howard through already. ETC.
   6. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 11, 2014 at 04:37 PM (#4768822)
Those are only those players who have been reported to clear waivers. Its not information that always gets out their publicly.

Royals are said to be interested in Daniel Nava, which doesn't really fit since he hits righties, but not lefties.
   7. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 11, 2014 at 04:42 PM (#4768827)
Wow, how did Jon Niese clear waivers?
   8. DKDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 05:08 PM (#4768844)
The Mets put him on waivers and nobody claimed him.

The Padres just designated a fellow for assignment who the Royals could check out.
   10. CFBF Is A Golden Spider Duck Posted: August 11, 2014 at 05:52 PM (#4768877)
Braves are starting Julio Teheran against Kevin Correia tonight.

That's...about as close to a must-win as you're going to find on August 11.
   11. Ziggy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 06:00 PM (#4768886)
Why not Byrd? He seems like the perfect emergency-DH-fill-in. Since he only costs $8m next year, you could probably even trade him at the end of the season. (One assumes he gets released before the 2016 option vests.)
   12. Ziggy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 06:01 PM (#4768888)
Heck, I bet he wouldn't even make it through waivers. Lots of teams can use a little power off the bench.
   13. boteman Posted: August 11, 2014 at 06:23 PM (#4768905)
If Yordano Ventura becomes the Ace of the Royals, you know what his nickname would be?

Willingham must have cleared. To KC for Jason Adam.
   15. Every Inge Counts Posted: August 11, 2014 at 07:41 PM (#4768955)
Well we get shitty Verlander tonight. And there is no way the Tigers are going to score 4 runs so that makes my night easier.
   16. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 11, 2014 at 07:47 PM (#4768957)
Quite a botched rundown in Baltimore - Yankees score two, lead 3-1.
   17. DKDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 07:48 PM (#4768960)
Sometimes, I’m thankful to be listening on the radio rather than watching.

O’s allow 2 runs (!) on a failed rundown.

Down 3-0 now to an awful Yankees team.
   18. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: August 11, 2014 at 07:58 PM (#4768965)
Braves are starting Julio Teheran against Kevin Correia tonight.

Correia is perfect through 3 innings. No Dodger outfielder has even had to touch a batted ball yet.
   19. Pirate Joe Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:01 PM (#4768968)
Well we get shitty Verlander tonight.

But only for one inning.

   20. Brian White Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:05 PM (#4768970)
Eventually, the Dodgers are going to realize that Julio Teheran has a terrific pickoff move.

Yasiel Puig thought he could get back to first safely, while standing up. Yasiel Puig thought wrong.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:12 PM (#4768974)
Stanton with two homeruns tonight, the second was a bomb.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:18 PM (#4768977)
Jay with a two run shot to tie it up. Nice. At least the offense isn't completely dormant.
   23. DKDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:20 PM (#4768978)
Welp, things just want from bad to worse in Baltimore.

Machado is the one player the Orioles just can’t afford to lose.
   24. Brian White Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:28 PM (#4768983)
the second was a bomb.

Having just seen the highlight, you weren't kidding. Then again, the HR was on a pitch that was pretty much begging to be crushed about 475 feet to left center.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:38 PM (#4768985)
Stanton with a fantastic play to rob Wong of at least a double...
   26. salvomania Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:45 PM (#4768990)
The Marlins are making a months' worth of highlight reel plays in their game against the Cardinals tonight.
   27. Davo's Favorite Tacos Are Moose Tacos Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:48 PM (#4768992)
How long is Hosmer out?
   28. boteman Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:50 PM (#4768993)
#24 - Stanton hit one earlier this year that would have gone completely out of Marlins Park had the support beam not been in the way; stupid architecture!! This bomb tonight would have gone out if those giant traveling windows had been open (which would be insane since I just came back from dinner at the local sports bar and it is really hot and muggy in Fort Lauderdale).

Ironically, Fox Sports Marlins put up a graphic quoting Matheny as saying something to the effect that he's seen 112 games and the Cardinals just are not a home run-hitting club. Then seconds later Jay (I think?) hit a 2-run homer to tie it up. Jinx.

Then another TV showed Manny Machado grabbing his knee as he collapsed in pain after a tough checked swing. That's a huge blow to the Orioles.
   29. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:51 PM (#4768994)
Rays 3, Rangers 0 after 1½. Now the suspense is in seeing if Smyly can throw a no-hitter.
   30. DKDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 08:53 PM (#4768995)
Manny's knee.

Not the same knee he blew out in September.

   31. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:00 PM (#4769000)
I know that it's not his real talent level, but this year, I love it when the other team brings in a lefty to face Jay.

edit:oops...thought the Cardinal announcer said the Marlins were bringing in a lefty.... must have heard wrong.
   32. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:01 PM (#4769001)
Dodgers score 3 runs on a bunch of ground balls.
   33. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:02 PM (#4769003)
A couple of Rays fans are sitting in the front row of the second deck in Arlington, in Desmond Jennings jerseys, and they have perched a little Desmond Jennings voodoo doll on the rail. Adorable.
   34. DKDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:11 PM (#4769009)
Chris Davis hits a go ahead HR. Still no update on Machado.
   35. TerpNats Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:25 PM (#4769017)
Dodgers score 3 runs on a bunch of ground balls.
One of which was hit by Correia (his second weak single of the night!); he came around to score. "Weird beard" Wilson followed with a 1-2-3 seventh. Idle Nats thinking blue for the next few days, and it could pay off tonight.
   36. TerpNats Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:26 PM (#4769018)
A Dodger win boosts Washington's NL East lead to four games.
   37. boteman Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:30 PM (#4769021)
So far the Dodgers are winning the Correian War. Meanwhile, the Marlins survived a Mike Dunn outing.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:31 PM (#4769025)
This could get ugly....Stanton up with two men on base, and no outs, facing left handed pitcher Sam Freeman.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:33 PM (#4769026)
AJ just gave the Marlins a run. Where as the Marlins are playing elite level defense, the Cardinals are playing like they are shell shocked.
   40. Ulysses S. Fairsmith Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:44 PM (#4769031)
It seems that it wasn't shitty Verlander, it was injured Verlander.

The rubes are getting restless down there in Hooterville.
   42. madvillain Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:53 PM (#4769042)
Gotta love the Baez line two weeks in:

281/281/625.

He's going to have to hit a lot to make up for that lack of walks, but I don't see any reason he can't.
   43. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:57 PM (#4769044)
Interesting play just transpired. Up for the Rays, a LHB named Kiermaier. Outfield playing normal, till Gary Pettis signals insistently from the Texas dugout that they should play him the other way. The CF and RF finally trot over, and Kiermaier promptly hits one into the RF corner for a triple. You don't know whether to smile wryly or weep.
   44. TerpNats Posted: August 11, 2014 at 09:59 PM (#4769046)
I don't know what Joey said (took the hint and put him on "ignore"), but the Braves were kicking the ball all over the place in the eighth as LA scored three runs.
   45. boteman Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:00 PM (#4769048)
Mark Lemke's voice.

That is all.
   46. Jolly Old St. Nick Is A Jolly Old St. Crip Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:04 PM (#4769050)
Still no update on Machado.

It's being called a "sprain", but that doesn't necessarily tell us everything. Full examination tomorrow.

Davis's home run was monster, with a 101 MPH bat speed. The one Cruz just hit was 106,
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:06 PM (#4769053)
Cardinals with slight life still as Wong hits a triple to make it 6-4... Hecheveria(sp) has been fantastic today...Holliday drives in Wong to make it 6-5(Holliday with his 4th hit of the night) Matt Adams up to bat.... it's either him or Holliday who you want up in this situation.
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:09 PM (#4769055)
Oh well... another lost in the books. If Aj doesn't throw the ball away on a wild pitch, this game might still be going on.
   49. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:14 PM (#4769061)
man how ed sedar keeps a job sometimes is a mystery. sends braun around third as the shortstop is catching the relay throw. braun was out my five miles.

   50. salvomania Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:15 PM (#4769062)
it's either him or Holliday who you want up in this situation.

Big guy's been sliding lately... 2 for his last 21 with 7 Ks, .477 OPS over last two weeks, .560 OPS with 1 homer over last four weeks.
   51. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:16 PM (#4769065)
I'd hate to jinx him, but Smyly is throwing a one-hitter after 7 1/3, on 84 pitches. The one hit, a drag bunt Smyly fielded but lobbed over the 1B's head back in the third …
   52. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:17 PM (#4769066)
Jinx I guess, Beltre singled to CF. But I've never even seen a TWO-hitter.
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:21 PM (#4769067)
Big guy's been sliding lately... 2 for his last 21 with 7 Ks, .477 OPS over last two weeks, .560 OPS with 1 homer over last four weeks.

Yes, but he's still the guy you want this year, he's shown that he can hit this year, something you won't get from Taveras, Wong, etc... and Carpenter is more concerned with walking than getting a hit this year, that if he comes up, you might as well assume Wong is going to be the guy you will need for the clutch... Peralta hasn't done much in the clutch this year, most of his damage is in the first two thirds of the game. (yes I know it's not a predictive stat, but it doesn't change the way things feel to an observer)

   54. TerpNats Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:25 PM (#4769071)
NL East: Washington now up by four.
NL West: Los Angeles now up by five.
   55. Joey B. has reignited his October #Natitude Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:26 PM (#4769072)
And the Cobb County Cornpones go down 6-2.
   56. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:27 PM (#4769073)
i know folks had some fun with the harrison kid from pittsburgh being in the all star game but he's hitting .318 now in mid-august with an .856 ops.

sure it's a career year most likely but it's some kind of year
   57. boteman Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:27 PM (#4769074)
Carl Crawford moves like a pregnant yak chasing down the fly ball all the way to the wall as Freddie Freeman scores on Gattis' double, making it 6-2 Dodgers. And that's the final score.
   58. salvomania Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:31 PM (#4769075)
something you won't get from Taveras, Wong, etc.

In 5 weeks since coming back from the DL Wong is hitting around .290 with an OPS near .900. He's been the best-looking hitter on the team since July.
   59. zonk Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:38 PM (#4769078)
I always thought Harrison had an extreme platoon split, but his career totals are actually slightly better against RHP... I also forgot he was a Cubs farmhand (acquired for Grabow and Gorzelany... Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio were the big chunks going to Pittsburg).
   60. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 10:43 PM (#4769081)
OK, Smyly has a 3-hitter for the Rays now, I seen them before. Heck if I leave before 3 outs in the ninth, though.

I am not a doctor, but that looks like a torn MCL to me.
   72. Dan Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:00 PM (#4769103)
It seems that it wasn't shitty Verlander, it was injured Verlander.

Question now is how long he was pitching with a sore shoulder but didn't say anything. That sure would explain the year he's been having.
   73. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:00 PM (#4769104)
Meanwhile time stands still in Texas, 2 outs bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th, as the managers trade PHs & OOGYs.
   74. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:05 PM (#4769106)
My gosh, it's the ninth inning and there are like sixteen people left in the ballpark.
   75. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:08 PM (#4769108)
brewers win. hold off the pirates and push the cards/reds a bit further back.

that helps.

and you know, that mark reynolds signing may be the pickup of the offseason
   76. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:10 PM (#4769109)
Rays take 7-0 lead, this should glue us in our seats.

Well the last time the Royals took 1st place, the Tigers went to a hot streak. Perhaps the same can happen again. But nothing is going our way right now.
   79. BDC Posted: August 11, 2014 at 11:22 PM (#4769119)
It's 7-0 and being played at the pace of an extra-inning Game 163.

I am not a doctor, but that looks like a torn MCL to me.

Manny was taking questions for about 5-10 minutes at a postgame press conference. He said it was just a bit sore, and it didn't look like he was in any great pain, but we're not going to really know anything more concrete until tomorrow.
   84. DKDC Posted: August 12, 2014 at 12:19 AM (#4769143)
Countless armchair doctors diagnosed Manny with a torn ACL last September and were proven wrong.

I'm certainly not optimistic - I think it's at least even odds that Manny is lost for the year - but let's wait and see.
