So, the Weezer post-game show was entertaining last night. The game was not.

Rule 7.13 is ridiculously awful. Even in this case, the back of the plate was open. This rule has to get modified during the offseason. Just terrible.

It's been a while since I've seen the old Maddux-Glavine strike zone, but Colon was getting it that inning.

Five of the six outs in the first inning of the Dodgers-Braves game were strikeouts. Should be a barn(yawn)burner.

The Braves turn Carl Crawford into...well, Carl Crawford from several years ago.
   7. BDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 07:43 PM (#4770573)
Not many fans in Arlington to see the Rays tonight, but maybe a few hundred more than at Monday's vacant game ... Some big groups of cheerleaders here for some reason, making lots of noise. 93 degrees & utterly Texas-blue skies. This is BTW, seriously what we call a "cold front" for August.
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 07:51 PM (#4770578)
Cardinals scored their two runs early today.... 2-0 going to the bottom of the third for the Cardinals, hopefully Masterson can keep the Marlins below that, because that is likely all the runs he'll see.
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 07:56 PM (#4770581)
Today is the 35th anniversary of Lou Brock's 3000th hit, so they decided to show the five current players closest to 3000.... Arod, Ichiro, Beltre, Pujols, and.......Konerko...not a name that I thought I would see on that list. But he's been around for a while.

The Cardinals pitching, record 3 quick outs against the Marlins, and I do not believe that McCarver/Mclaughlin said more than two sentences about the action on the field.

OMG, I just wandered into an empty restroom and looked in vain for a urinal, before realizing what THAT meant. Perils of a deserted ballpark.

yep, I edited my commented after realizing my lack of realizing that it really is 2014.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:08 PM (#4770592)
Masterson is looking quite decent so far. (Of course I'm jinxing him and he's about to unleash a 4 run 5th, which would make the score 4-2 and an insurmountable lead for the Cardinals offense to come back against)
   15. Snowboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:16 PM (#4770600)
Martin Prado in RF for NYY (first start out there since 2009) has looked better than Delmon Young in LF for BAL.
Also with Machado being placed on the DL, Chris Davis has shifted over to play 3B today.
And Michael Pineda is perfect thru 4.
   16. Joey B. Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:19 PM (#4770602)
On what day did God create Kevin Frandsen, and why couldn't He have rested on that day too?
   17. Super Creepy Derek Lowe (GGC) Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:19 PM (#4770603)
Carry on, cfb. I was thinking to myself, "Brock played until 1989?"
   18. DKDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:19 PM (#4770604)
The Orioles hitters seem to think that tonight's game was rained out as they haven't showed up yet and it's the 5th inning.

Tillman gives up an early HR to a bad hitter in a bad lineup and Os trail.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:22 PM (#4770607)
Garret Jones is just not a good first baseman, sure it was in the dirt, but he should have dug it out. Cardinals leading 3-0 after Holliday hits into a routine double play(with runners on first and second) that the second baseman made a poor throw to give the Cardinals a run and put Holliday on second base.

Not sure why Garret Jones has a job. 98 ops+ and a poor defender.
   20. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:30 PM (#4770612)
Salty was safe at first on a really close play, umpire called him out, went to replay and they kept the call. Marlins got screwed.
   21. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:40 PM (#4770626)
McCarver is reading from the memo, which says that a Cardinal announcer must find fault with Taveras....
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: August 13, 2014 at 08:45 PM (#4770631)
McCarver has been railing on Taveras for about five minutes straight now.... What started as a pleasant surprise, McCarver being competent and prepared, has steadily turned into painful TV viewing, of a blow-hard who can't stop repeating the same point over and over, broadcast to broadcast.

C'mon Colon would be about the 20th most fattest player on an NFL team...

I'm late to the party, but Baez and Rizzo went back to back off Lohse in the third; the Cubs' first 4 hitters are 7 for 7 with a sac fly and 2 homers. Lohse left after 3 with a tweaked ankle, which he apparently injured while batting.

Woo hoo! Jonathan Schoop hits a game tying HR off Betances.

Did Girardi/Pena push their luck with a third inning for Betances, or does Schoop just completely own the Yankees?

The Yankees' problem is that they don't have a lockdown bridge between Betances and Robertson, and this was Betances' first attempt at a third inning. Baltimore's bullpen is a lot deeper.
   37. Every Inge Counts Posted: August 13, 2014 at 09:36 PM (#4770671)
What is this? Scoring runs?
   38. DKDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 09:37 PM (#4770672)
Andy, do you even passively root for the Yankees anymore? The Os are so much more fun.

Time for Adam Jones to break out of his mini-funk here.

I'm split, but right now I'm just pulling for the team that has a chance of doing well in the postseason. The Yankees have been doing it with nothing but smoke and mirrors for the past two years. You gotta admire their heart, but the talent just ain't there.

Oh, and the tipping point was when the Orioles gave away those Wild Bill Hagy hats last Saturday. Even my completely non-baseball loving wife is wearing one as a fashion statement. (smile)

Britton looking a bit wild here. I hope this one stays uninteresting.

It's a good thing we were playing a steaming sh*t pile tonight. Any decent team would have beaten us.

Now, go Mariners...
   46. Jolly Old St. Nick Is A Jolly Old St. Crip Posted: August 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM (#4770698)
Last chance in the ninth inning, and who do the Yankees have to keep the game going? Stephen Drew (OPS+ 53), with Ichiro (OPS+ 85) on deck. That pretty much says it all.
   47. Every Inge Counts Posted: August 13, 2014 at 10:10 PM (#4770705)
Joe Nathan is pure ####. Ausmus stop trotting this piece of #### every 9th inning and pretending that a lead is safe with him pitching. You would think Ausmus would be managing for his job.

We got the Kimbrel-Puig ninth inning match-up we wanted. Kimbrel struck him out with runners on first and second and no outs.

Oh, and the tipping point was when the Orioles gave away those Wild Bill Hagy hats last Saturday.

Remember when Wild Bill became persona-non-grata at Memorial Stadium? I was at Orioles Park at Camden Yards in section 74 behind Brady Anderson in LF when a big commotion arose behind the 1B dugout. Later I discovered that it was Wild Bill's triumphant return to an Orioles game, although I can't be sure of that and he might have returned prior to that. Urban legends can be so hard to track, you know.

edit: Jonathan Lucroy just can not be stopped!

Hagy began to be alienated as early as the 1983 ALCS, when Edward Bennett Williams wouldn't let him and his friends buy playoff tickets together in Section 34. It went downhill pretty quickly after that, and when in 1985 he wasn't allowed to bring his own beer into the park, he left Memorial Stadium for good, and apparently never returned to an Orioles game until Cal's 2131.

I also noticed that those Wild Bill hats had an Orioles' logo on the front, but no depiction of Hagy himself. Kind of ironic that an entity that enforces its trademarks with such ferocity might be afraid of facing a lawsuit from Hagy's family for an unauthorized use of his likeness. My sense is that the Orioles like Wild Bill and fans like him a lot better after they're gone to their reward.

Seriously? Jesus Christ, what a piece of work you are.

Isn't it time for your diaper change, my little Brown Diaper baby?

Now pitching for Texas: JP Arencibia. The man can do anything.
   54. BDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 10:47 PM (#4770722)
Arencibia gets Matt Joyce to foul out.
   55. BDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 10:48 PM (#4770723)
Surrenders an infield single. Arencibia's out pitch is a 71-MPH fastball. He gets Loney to fly to CF.
   56. BDC Posted: August 13, 2014 at 10:49 PM (#4770724)
Out three is a medium fly to left. Piece of cake.
   57. boteman Posted: August 13, 2014 at 11:49 PM (#4770739)
The Indians had a mini-meltdown on defense in the 12th inning, so now the D-bags lead 1-0 with the Cleveland 9 down to their last out.

edit: Don't touch that dial! PH Lonnie Chisenhall pokes one into the RF corner for a stand-up double. Now Kipnis hitting with 2 outs.

edit2: Oh well, Kipnis waves over a 4-seamer to end the game. The bad guys won.

From the Shorter Games desk: check out the 2:06 shutout of the Athletics on Wednesday.
   59. shoelesjoe Posted: August 14, 2014 at 01:14 AM (#4770760)
The Jays get shut out in Seattle 2-0, putting them 9 back in the loss column with 40 games left to play. After tonight's comeback the Orioles are now 8 up in the loss column on the second place Yankees (who look like they're gonna have to battle just to stay above .500 the rest of the way). Baltimore has played 31 straight against teams with winning records and gone 21-10.

Is it over in the AL East?
   60. boteman Posted: August 14, 2014 at 01:18 AM (#4770764)
