I hate the gimmick uniforms so, so ####### much.

Adam Eaton HR gives Nationals a 1-0 lead @ Wrigley, heading into the 2nd.

The all-white (Cubs) & all-black (Nationals) uniforms don’t look great on TV, IMHO, and make it almost impossible to read the numbers & nicknames (IT’S PLAYERS WEEKEND!) unless there is a close-up shot.

All things being equal, GO CUBBIES!

Infield hit, steal, sacrifice & SF gives Nationals 2-0 lead, as MASN broadcasters wax poetically about small ball.

Possibly the worst broadcast team in the bigs. Shameless homerism.

I am disappointed that the A's were not given anyone to whomp on this Friday, because JFC those guys are rolling: 13-5 so far in August to move atop the AL Wild Card, including a 6-1 homestand against the Astros and Yankees.

Oakland's monthly win %:
May: .600
June: .607
July: .625
August (so far): .722

If this keeps up, they'll win the World Series by 10 games.

How will the Mets win today?!

Representing the bbtf crowd in our customers Section 330.

Players Weekend is kind of silly, but it doesn't bother me.

Player of the Month for August: Isan Diaz of the Marlins. 191/264/277. Mostly batting first or second. OPS+ 17. Also 6 errors for a field percentage of 878. I just realized he was in the Yelich trade

Kris Bryant bunting a popout on the first pitch, after the Cubs garner their first hit. smh...
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2019 at 04:06 PM (#5873843)
If I read it correctly, every team will be in all-white or all-black uniforms for the entire weekend. Home team gets 1st choice.
   15. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 23, 2019 at 04:17 PM (#5873848)
They're just ghastly. They look like a mistake. I wouldn't be surprised if, by Sunday, some team refuses to wear them.

"They gotta play 'em one day at a time. I'm just happy the ballclub is there. I just want them to give it their best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out."
He said, through a tight smile.

Kris Bryant bunting a popout on the first pitch, after the Cubs garner their first hit. smh...

The past week Bryant has been chasing the first pitch a lot, with quite a few of them not being hittable so getting himself out easily. I guess the bunt attempt was really trying to mix it up.

I love Lester and all, but he's been really bad lately - his ERA is 5.48 in his last 17 starts (and that'll go up after today), with him giving up at least 4ER in 8 of those.

Do we know what Chris Sale thinks about them?
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2019 at 04:38 PM (#5873858)
Juan Soto continues to impress - 3 hits [so far] today, including a HR to make it 8-0, Nationals. Soto is climbing the Age-20 Leaderboard, besting some all-time greats in several important categories. Attention should be paid.
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2019 at 05:05 PM (#5873864)
Anibal Sanchez with a 1-hit, 8-0 shutout through 8 innings, at 98 pitches. Might be bullpen proof, but a couple of tack-on runs wouldn’t hurt. Oh, wait, no one up in the Nationals bullpen, so it may be a CG attempt.

EDIT: 9-0.

Aww, was hoping for better from my Springfield dude. At least he'll always have that home run against deGrom.

The purge has begun, Orioles Fire 11 Front Office & Scouting Personnel:
Orioles general manager Mike Elias has fired 11 members of the scouting department and front office as part of an effort to turn around a team in the early stages of a major rebuild. Elias announced the personnel moves Friday. The rookie GM would not reveal the names of those people dismissed, nor the positions impacted.
Seems silly to withhold the names, it’s not going to be a secret for long.
   23. JJ1986 Posted: August 23, 2019 at 07:34 PM (#5873911)
These uniforms are just the worst.
   24. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 07:38 PM (#5873913)
If I read it correctly, every team will be in all-white or all-black uniforms for the entire weekend.

I want to see a fielder on a team wearing black jerseys throw to an umpire by mistake.
   25. JJ1986 Posted: August 23, 2019 at 07:50 PM (#5873923)
deGrom is wearing the wrong color hat (black when all the other Mets are wearing white.)
   26. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 08:10 PM (#5873930)
At least the white uniforms make it easy to tell who has been diving in the dirt and who has been playing it safe.

Oh wait! Those must be a bunch of Good Humor ice cream men out on the field. How will the kids get out there to buy from them???
   27. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 23, 2019 at 08:17 PM (#5873933)
I assume that when they were deciding on all-white uniforms with white batting helmets for Players’ Weekend, no one in the room was old enough to remember Woody Allen’s “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex,” and specifically the scene where he’s dressed up as a sperm.
   28. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 08:27 PM (#5873934)
deGrom is wearing the wrong color hat (black when all the other Mets are wearing white.)

Pitchers in white are wearing black caps. Same thing in Miami, por ejemplo.

Annnnnnnd replay gets another call wrong. So glad we have this waste of time delaying the game for the betting houses.
   29. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 08:42 PM (#5873938)
OUCH! Nido just got whacked on the back of his head (helmet) with Josh Donaldson's backswing. He stayed crouched down grasping the back of his skull for about a scary minute, but is now standing and talking to the trainer. Slow motion replay shows the bat splitting the two parts of his helmet/mask combo, so it couldn't have been in a worse place, but he looks like he's staying in the game. Scary moment, but I hope he doesn't suffer a concussion from it. The Nats can beat them at full strength anyway.

it's stupid uniform weekend. the cards look like little leaguers.

oh well, let the kids play blahblahblah...
   33. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:04 PM (#5873949)
Now Tomas Nido has left the game, replaced by Wilson Ramos, who apparently has a hitting streak on the line.
   34. phredbird Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:15 PM (#5873957)

ouch! pitch runs in on arenado, and he can't stop his swing, it hits him on an unprotected part of his forearm and ricochets off the jawline of yadi's mask. they both went down.

   37. Perry Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:34 PM (#5873962)
Jeez these uniforms are making this borderline unwatchable. Actually the Rockies look sort of okay in all black, since they wear a lot of black normally anyway, but the Cardinals in all white... yeesh.
   38. phredbird Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:41 PM (#5873963)

argh, these uniforms.

flaherty, pitching for st louis, has 'love you ty' as his nickname on the back of the uniform, in honor of tyler skaggs. but he is also wearing a '45' patch on his sleeve, which i assume was skaggs' number on the angels, but for a horrible moment i thought bob gibson had died.

edit: and now i see everyone is wearing 45. sheesh, pay attention.
   39. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:49 PM (#5873964)
This Phillies-Marlins game is nutso! I'm not watching it, but have the MLB Gameday thingy going in a browser tab.

Phillies went 4+2+1 to go up 7-0 in the 3rd, then Vinny fell apart to allow the Marlins to TIE IT UP 7-7 in the bottom of the 3rd. Then the Phillies went up 9-7 in the top 4th, and now the Marlins have answered with 2 in the 5th to tie it back up 9-9 in the 5th inning.

EDIT: Now 11-9 Marlins, bottom 5th! "Texas" Ranger Suarez now on to stop the bleeding.

This NL East is gettin gooooooood*

* And by goooooood I mean don't touch that dial, kids!
   40. cardsfanboy Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:51 PM (#5873965)
One of the most obvious predictions in the world is that baseball fans will find some way to complain about anything different, glad to see this thread not disappointing the obvious prediction.

It's a weekend thing.... it's more or less experimental crap... of course there are going to be obvious misses and maybe some hits also. I'm loving the customized bats... not really a fan of the solid color uniforms like most everyone else (heck Dan McLaughlin made a joke that from a Cardinal hitter viewpoint, there is an extra fielder on the infield... since the umpire is wearing black also) love the nickname thing, as long as there was some effort put into it (heck Brebbia claimed that his name was in honor of his father, who's last name was Brebbia)

Ultimately if the players enjoy it, then I'm fine with it.
   41. JJ1986 Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:54 PM (#5873966)
Why is Edwin Diaz in the game?????
   42. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 09:55 PM (#5873967)
Because the Mets want to lose.
   43. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:02 PM (#5873968)
CFB, you literally can't tell the players by the uniforms. It's the ice cream men versus the stagehands/line cooks in every game. I'm no fashion critic, but this was just a big, huge swing-and-a-miss by MLB on this one.
   44. bunyon Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5873969)
The thing I don’t get about the Mets whites - I guess all the whites - is that there is virtually no border on the writing. I think I’d be ok with it if the team name were legible. The braves don’t look bad.
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:04 PM (#5873970)
Bote... agree, but it was predictable that no matter what they did, that a significant percentage was going to complain.. Jim Edmonds said that he wishes they would have put "black piping" on the names and logo... something to break it up.

And of course the Cardinal announcers pointed out you can't read the names... so the uniform thing was a pretty big fail.. at the same time, you have these freaking awesome bats, shoes, nicknames that were all winners.
   46. Lassus Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:17 PM (#5873972)
it is difficult for me to imagine us winning this game.
   47. Lassus Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:18 PM (#5873973)
the braves uniforms definitely look cooler than the mets uniforms.
   48. Lassus Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:19 PM (#5873974)
walk-off walk, mets
   49. Lassus Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:21 PM (#5873975)
everyone knew that was coming, rosario, but you somehow did not.
   50. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:25 PM (#5873976)
Agreed, but it amazes me at how frequently pitchers will bury a ball in the dirt with the winning run 90 feet away--and they get away with it! #ballsy
   51. JJ1986 Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:26 PM (#5873977)
"Phillip" Freeman just tried to walk to first on a ball in the middle of the strikezone.

MESSAGE TO MLB:

STOP SHOWING THOSE GODDAMM MIKE TROUT COMMERCIALS!!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!! THAT'S 50 ####### TIMES TONIGHT IN ONE GAME ALONE!!! THERE ARE OTHER PLAYERS WHO PLAY BASEBALL!!!
   55. JJ1986 Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:31 PM (#5873981)
There are like 10 regular MLB.tv commercials that are more annoying than Mike Trout.
   56. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:32 PM (#5873982)
I don't care if he calls his mother, his father, his priest and his Boy Scout Troopmaster before every at bat. Just. Stop.
   57. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5873983)

Yeah, but they don't show them 50 goddamm times a game, every game, every day, sometimes twice within the same commercial break. It's like Chinese water torture.
   58. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:37 PM (#5873984)
Andy, take your meds. Depending on how you are watching the game(s) this is de rigeur for our modern times. If you are watching on a web browser, I strongly recommend installing the "uBlock Origin" and "uMatrix" add-ons that will reduce or eliminate these disruptions to your peace of mind. I empathize, while being realistic.
   59. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:38 PM (#5873985)
If you don’t pay attention to the commercials, they won’t bother you.

EDIT: Ah, right on cue, Mike Trout is “analyzed” by Harold Reynolds, amidst Yankees @ Dodgers, for the amusement of all.

I do not understand the point of Aaron Altherr.
   62. Lassus Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:45 PM (#5873988)
a baseball team should never have someone as worthless as altherr on the team.

those two innings had to be it.
   63. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:48 PM (#5873989)
Which Mets pitcher will next hit in the pitcher's spot??

BTW, NL East update:
PHI 9
MIA 15 B8

UPDATE to the Update:
PHI9
MIA 19 (NINETEEN!) B8

Break up the Marlins!
   64. bunyon Posted: August 23, 2019 at 10:48 PM (#5873990)
I enjoy the trout commercials because it seems to be giving yankee fans a dose of Jeter during his heyday.

Judge gavels a HR to LF. Yes, LF. 1-0.

EDIT: Gary Sanchez follows with solo shot. 2-0.

   69. Rob_Wood Posted: August 23, 2019 at 11:09 PM (#5873997)
The most recent play in Braves-Mets game gives me another opportunity to critique modern major league first baseman's inability to "efficiently" stretch for a throw. Invariably they stretch at a 90-degree angle which is, clearly, not the thing to do if it's a close play and every millisecond counts. Obviously, the best stretch is directly in the direction the throw is coming.

Someone told me (on this website?) that modern first base men are taught that these days to avoid the possibility of injury if the ball is "too close" to the runner arriving at first base around the same time. Nevertheless, I see it countless times each night and a few times it costs the first baseman an out.

Enrique Hernandez has smeared excrement all over the front of his white batting helmet, apparently in protest over the ridiculous uniforms.

Dan Szymborski @DSzymborski
What's amazing is that somebody thought this idea up. Then told someone else who thought it was a good idea. And they had group meetings, panels, got cost projections, bids, worked with the marketing people on a cohesive plan. All this for the worst uniforms in baseball history. You could literally find an abandoned strip mall, find the ruins of a Caldor, break the padlock that was installed in 2002, and go in and find better clothing than these uniforms for the players to wear for these games.

cards win, finally.

i'm sorry, put me in the group that is not crazy about these unis. kind of a distraction. i liked when they did those funky designs in bolder colors and played with logo size and placement a couple of years ago.

i do like the nicknames, though. that part is fun.

good night and good luck!

Mets CF should have put his hands up, that ball stuck in the wall. Automatic double, run doesn't score.
   83. Bote Man Posted: August 23, 2019 at 11:25 PM (#5874011)
If Lagares picked up the ball, how can they rule it an automatic double?? That's the BS Justin Upton play at Nats Park where you could see it stuck under the fence, he threw his hands up instead of picking up the ball and throwing it back in. I want the Braves to lose for fan reasons, but that's a bad call.

It usually does. This game will end soon-ish, one way or the other. Frustrating to see a winnable game slip through your fingers like the sands of time.

Melanson looks like he's part of the post game cleaning crew.

[89] If you tweak the limits, you can find those four 19-11 games:

1922-08-15 CHW BOS
1992-08-04 CHW MIN
1996-07-13 CLE MIN
2006-09-28 LAD COL

####### inevitable.

IBB to Gary Sanchez loads the bases, but Sir Didi responds to the obvious slight with a GRAND SLAM! 6-1.

EDIT: The Trout commercial follows - much more amusing if you visualize an elderly red-faced gentlemen shaking his fist and yelling at the clouds while watching.

I'd cut on the Yankees game, but Vin Scully isn't calling the Dahhhdgers broadcasts any more so what would be the point??

Scully narrated a promo ad for the Players Weekend unis, probably a last minute effort to bolster an obviously poor decision.

On the field, Gleyber Torres HR makes it 8-1.

I'm sure that BITD you also found those "Even a caveman could do it" commercials to be the height of charm after the 100,000th showing. Is there any limit to your tolerance for feelgood tripe?

(And to make things even worse, I agree with Dan's take on those uniforms.)
