Speaking of the west coast, let's beat the snot out of Atlanta so badly tonight that they think they're still out there.

If the season ended today, the Royals would be going to the post-season, for the first time since 1985.

Wow. How are the Nats only 4.5 ahead of Atlanta?
   13. Joey B. is counting the days to Trea Turner Posted: August 08, 2014 at 06:04 PM (#4767480)
Bad luck; we should definitely be 8.5 or 9.5 games ahead by now. Hopefully we'll start to rectify that beginning tonight.
   14. john_halfz Posted: August 08, 2014 at 06:11 PM (#4767487)
One would think. Outside of the NL West, it's the worst division in baseball. And at least the NL West has two reasonable facsimiles of "good" baseball teams.

Brock Holt will be starting in center field for the 5th time this season...which is good news for people who own him in Yahoo fantasy leagues!

(now if only they'd give him one more start at shortstop, we'd be set!)
   16. DKDC Posted: August 08, 2014 at 07:26 PM (#4767527)
Os leave em loaded with no runs in the first. I think they just did the same thing twice in their last series.

Just getting nothing out of the middle of their lineup right now.

You won't see me complaining about that result.

Just getting nothing out of the middle of their lineup right now.

They can get hot on Monday.

Glad we acquired Masterson...4-0 Baltimore in the second inning..one out and that was because of a sacrifice.
   19. Joey B. is counting the days to Trea Turner Posted: August 08, 2014 at 07:44 PM (#4767535)
It's not every day you see a leadoff hitter with a .281 OBP in August.
   20. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: August 08, 2014 at 07:50 PM (#4767536)
Wow. How are the Nats only 4.5 ahead of Atlanta?

3-7 against the Braves this year.
   21. Bote Man Posted: August 08, 2014 at 07:55 PM (#4767539)
3-7 against the Braves this year.

Might as well chalk it up as 3-8 right now. :-(
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 07:57 PM (#4767540)
Again, I hate the modern usage of a pitcher. Masterson can't get anyone out, Cardinals are losing 5-0 in the third inning...and they will keep him in there until the 5th inning no matter what. I would have someone warming up now and be replacing him the next well hit base hit, hit batter or 5 pitch walk.
   23. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:00 PM (#4767541)
Horton and Mclaughlin are trying to rationalize keeping Masterson in the game..."You don't want the pitcher going out with a bad start and thinking about it for the next five days.".... or "Sometimes a pitcher just finds his stuff after a rough outing like this."...

No. Get his ass out of the ####### game, waste the entire bullpen if you have to, and get on the phone with Memphis to bring someone up for the rest of the series. You don't just surrender 8 runs to "save the bullpen".
   24. salvomania Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:05 PM (#4767542)
When the 3rd inning began, the Cardinals were down 4-0 and Justin Masterson has retired just five of 14 Orioles (I'm not counting the sac bunt).

Hardy leads off with a homer, and the next three also reach base, and Masterson exits down 5-0 with the bases loaded and no one out.
   25. DKDC Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:06 PM (#4767544)
To be fair, Os have jumped on pitchers early more than a few times in recent weeks and then suddenly go on an 0 for 15 streak against the same pitcher.

So they do seem to have a lineup that can suddenly go into hibernation.

Didn't happen this time, though.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:07 PM (#4767545)
Yea....when you are pitching this bad, even the modern manager can't justify keeping you out there...

still 5-0 third inning, bases loaded with recently called up Greenwood in the game to get out of this no out jam.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:08 PM (#4767546)
Don't be fooled Oriole fans...Greenwood is better than his numbers... he had a rough first couple of appearances and then was very good.
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:10 PM (#4767547)
Nice....bases loaded no outs and for the second time this game the Orioles don't score a run. (give you an idea of how lopsided this game has been it's 5-0 in the third inning and twice the Orioles have had bases loaded and no outs and didn't score)
   29. flournoy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:11 PM (#4767549)
6-0 lead against the Washington Slumpbusters. I missed these guys.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:14 PM (#4767550)
Horton corrected himself as I was typing my pedantic complaint against him. He said the ball literally disappeared....then corrected himself and said figuratively...at least he's smart enough to realize his comment was annoying.

Some nights it's just not your teams night...8-0 Orioles.
   35. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:33 PM (#4767562)
At least something fun came out of this game...ball hit to Adams, he boots it, the pitcher who was coming over to cover first picks it up and tosses it to Adams who barehands it while covering first for the out.
   36. DKDC Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:37 PM (#4767563)
Adam Jones walking? JJ Hardy homering?

Who are these guys?
   37. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:41 PM (#4767564)
I'm nearly to the point that I'm thinking of watching some regular TV....talk about a weird week, this might be the second game in a week (which would also be the second game in probably over 2+ years) that I might turn off while it's going on. (the other game this week was actually a good game, but I had to go to sleep)
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 08:48 PM (#4767566)
Horton with a good idea..... Let's have a bobblehead day for the great players of the past outside of the living hofers.... (Says he got the idea because the Pirates had a Honus Wagner bobblehead)

I love bobble head days, generally try to time my 4-6 games a year with a bobblehead day if feasible, but they seem to recycle the same characters...

I really hope the Angels get Bourjos back. He seems to have left all his skills in Anaheim.

Cardinals are officially below .500 pyth this season.

3rd hit batter this game...none intentional, so Baltimore wouldn't be justify in providing some chin music(/sarcasm tag off)

watching him play, you have to wonder if he has any skills. He's tentative in the field, he plays deeper than he needs to be, he has no ability to hit a fast ball, and is usually beat by anything off speed also. His baserunning is on par with Theriot at times. His one skill, that he is showing as a Cardinal, is very good make up speed on fly balls that stay in the air for a bit of a time(provided he has to go back, as he's a chicken sht on charging the ball)
   45. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 09:20 PM (#4767580)
Do the Orioles wait for the right opportunity to hit a batter or hit Ellis right off the bat?
   46. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 09:36 PM (#4767585)
Mounting a comeback.... 12-2.... only the 7th inning.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 09:57 PM (#4767590)
Descalso comes in and screws up a routine play...but don't worry Horton will say it was a tough play to make people feel like there is a reason he belongs on the roster (well there is, at least over Ellis...get rid of Ellis first, then we can complain about Descalso)

Meanwhile, Tony Cruz plays a difficult ball at third base into a double play. (hopefully if we make the post season, that we decide to take Cruz, AJ and Molina and not have both Ellis or Descalso on the roster)
   48. cardsfanboy Posted: August 08, 2014 at 10:04 PM (#4767591)
Horton and McLaughlin quoting Bob Seeger or Metallica and saying the Cardinals need to turn the page.

Don't worry, because tomorrow for some unknown reason you'll be facing Ubaldo Jiminez instead of Kevin Gausman, who's getting pushed back a day. How the hell Jiminez and his 4.52 ERA (and 5 quality starts out of 18) ever got back into the starting rotation is a mystery to any Orioles fan, when the current five have been all pitching lights out since the end of June. I know Showalter had to keep him on the roster when he came off the DL, but why not just stick him at the end of the bullpen where he can do the least damage?

Keeping an eye on the A's-Twins game, 6-5 Oakland after 8.

Checked the Yahoo Sports sidebar just now and was horrified to see MINNESOTA 10 - OAKLAND 6.

But I realized that was the Raiders/Vikings score. :-)

IMO that would be a stupid reason, but a better one might be to give Gausman and Chen more rest between starts. Gausman's never pitched in the Majors over a full season, and Chen has been gassed down the stretch in the past.

--------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore's starting rotation ERA as of June 30, and their ERA since then:

Tillman 4.18 / 2.84

Chen 4.19 / 3.16

Gausman 3.86 / 3.71

Gonzalez 4.56 / 2.43

Norris 3.62 / 3.86
