On Deadspin someone photoshopped the Verlander/Upton photo with the Prince Fielder Body Issue photo instead of Upton. It's disturbing but hilarious.

If ESPN wants to air every Yankees-Red Sox game, that's their decision, but announcing the match-up at the end of a spot that's all about the drama of meaningful September baseball does draw attention in a bad way.

All three games this week are getting national coverage. MLBN on Tuesday and Thursday, ESPN on Wednesday. It's really nuts. MLBN generally I think does a pretty good job of covering the whole league but this is ridiculous. You've got Tigers-Indians or if you wait until 8PM eastern Pirates-Cardinals which are both pretty big series.

On the flip side this is Derek Jeter's last series against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in his career which is of course meaningful. (seriously, you know they are going to make a deal out of it which will ramp up the silliness factor).

Gausman goes from throwing a gem to being down 3-0 in the blink of an eye.

A couple poor defensive plays didn't help, but now O's will have to come back against Phil Hughes, who apparently suddenly became a good pitcher this year.
   13. Russlan is fond of Dillon Gee Posted: September 01, 2014 at 03:29 PM (#4783193)
Dilson Herrera has the homer and triple part of the cycle already taken care of so far.

Bummer I missed those. Maybe he'll do more awesome things now that I'm watching.
   15. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:01 PM (#4783204)
Cole Hamels lifted for a pinch-hitter with a no-hitter through 6. 108 pitches, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 7K. He's been all smiles after being taken out. There were 2 on, 2 outs. Sizemore walked and Ben Revere followed with a triple. Revere has increased his RBIs by 26.7% today, by driving in 4.

Diekman and Giles kept the no-no going through 8. Giles struck out the side -- 52 Ks in 35.2 innings now.
   16. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:05 PM (#4783206)
Make that 33% increase in Revere's RBI totals in today's game.
   17. The District Attorney Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:09 PM (#4783208)
Giles looks really exceptional. I suppose there is a limit to how much a closer can impress you these days -- what's he supposed to do, strike out 18 per 9? Maybe 20? -- but he certainly is the type of young talent that is rare on this team. (Not that there's much of anything wrong with Papelbon.)

Heh... c'mon, Heyward, your whole MVP argument is outfield defense!
   18. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:17 PM (#4783211)
With no Alvarez playing for the Pirates, I thought the Cardinals might have a chance.. McCutchen has borrowed Alvarez's Cardinal killer bat.

Ack.

Dunn gives the A's a shot in the arm - a 2 run HR in his first AB.
   21. The District Attorney Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:23 PM (#4783216)
No-hitter (on a play by Ruf at 1B that perhaps Howard wouldn't have made.) 5 BB, 4 pitchers. Yay?
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:24 PM (#4783217)
It is nice having Yadier back to toasts an errant runner or two.

Clubhouse meeting working out for Oakland. Two more runs for the A's in the first inning, matching their entire total from the 4-game sweep.

EDIT: And Young is OUT. Not even out of the first inning.

EDIT2: Another hit. 5-0. This is a must-win for Seattle. Not looking so good.
   26. The District Attorney Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:35 PM (#4783222)
Sorry, that was the seventh error. STOP INTENTIONALLY WALKING PEOPLE. STOP MAKING ERRORS. EVERYONE JUST STOP.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:40 PM (#4783226)
Wong with his 11th homer of the year(Driving in Kozma! who singled).... For a guy that isn't capable of eventually hitting double digit homeruns, he seems to have reached that total already in his first year. Tie game with the Pirates 4-4. Jay is having a pretty good game in leadoff spot today also.
   28. The District Attorney Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:42 PM (#4783231)
No, I guess it was six errors after all. Gameday lost track. Can't blame it at all.

Holliday is on FIRE.... another rbi, Cardinals take the lead 5-4.

Not meaningful, but it *is* going to get people watching. It's all about ratings.

Seattle is the worst good team or the very best of the many bad teams or whatever means they are already down 5-0 to what has been conclusively proven in the past four days to be the worst team in the history of sports. Okay, I'm a bit bitter, and it never pays to care about baseball. Ever.

Meanwhile, I notice the A's are having a "'Star Wars' Fireworks' Night." I'd figure the A's to be too cool for that and have a "'Spaceballs Fireworks' Night." Which would be much cooler, esp. as a nod to Joan Rivers and all. Just an idea.

I've been waiting for the Chris Young Bomb to explode. Looks like it finally did.

He's being relieved by Taijuan Walker. I got kicked around M's boards for suggesting that maybe he needed a little more time in the minors to work on his control. He got hurt, but when he's pitched, he's been . . . well, his ERA is okay, but he's been pretty terrible. He's striking guys out, but he's also walking the ballpark. He's lucky his ERA isn't closer to 5.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: September 01, 2014 at 04:59 PM (#4783240)
Carlos Martinez seems determined to give the lead right back to the Pirates.

Please, Lord, let that entire Yanks-Bosox series be meaningless, to make ESPN look even more foolish than it is now.
