HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

HOW MANY INNINGS WILL THE RED SOX PLAY TODAY!?
   3. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 19, 2017 at 06:46 PM (#5534717)
Aaron Judge hit his 44th HR last night. In the Yankees long and glorious history only Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris & Alex Rodriguez have hit more in a season. Pretty good company, and there's a dozen games left to go.
   4. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:23 PM (#5534723)
Reds already take a lead in the first inning...ugh, this team is frustrating right now.
   5. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:26 PM (#5534725)
Amazing throw there by Contreras.
   6. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:41 PM (#5534727)
Not looking too promising for the good guys, 2-0 commies still in the second inning.
   7. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:47 PM (#5534728)
8 up for the Cardinals, 8 retired.... I haven't seen every at bat, but the 5 I have seen have been weak as hell.
   8. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:48 PM (#5534729)
Flaherty already being pinched hit for in the third inning. But it looks like they are replacing Flaherty for Gant, not sure that is an upgrade, at least Flaherty has looked like a major league pitcher frequently enough. (and yes I know Gant's numbers in 8 1/3 innings this year)
   9. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 07:58 PM (#5534730)
Gant gives up 2 runs in his 0/3rds of an inning so far. (single, homerun, walk) ERA goes from 2.16 to 4.32 in a hurry.
   10. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:10 PM (#5534735)
Here is something that I don't agree with from McLaughlin, he basically just said that Pham has earned a starting job coming into next year. Which is more or less true, but the certainty he put it, just rings false. Look at what Aledmys Diaz did last year and how he was treated this year (and I fully agree with how he was treated.) Look at Piscotty the last two years etc.... the fact is that you have to constantly re-earn your job, until you have fully earned your job. One season is not a lock into 150 starts next year. One good season is maybe a lock to 20 out of 30 starts to start the season off.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:11 PM (#5534736)
Well that changed in a hurry...singl(Pham) single(first and third) single (one run scored) homerun Yadier...tie game. 4-4
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:11 PM (#5534737)
back to back by DeJong to make it a 5-4 lead.
   13. Nose army. Beef diaper? (CoB) Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:15 PM (#5534739)
Back to back bunt hits for the Twins ... bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the 1st.
   14. Nose army. Beef diaper? (CoB) Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:17 PM (#5534740)
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand CC gets a GiDP ... run scores.
   15. Joe Bivens Will Take a Steaming Dump Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:22 PM (#5534742)
Houston has its A team out there against the White Sox tonight. Theyre trying for bestcrecord so they can play the wild card team.
   16. Bote Man Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:22 PM (#5534743)
Ryan Zimmerman drives in his 100th run of the season, which seems to be a Big Deal to a lot of commentators.
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:24 PM (#5534746)
Wainwright has been activated today, will be in the pen for now(there is only two weeks, but after Flaherty's performance tonight, I would be willing to bet that Waino gets another start this year)
   18. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:27 PM (#5534747)
Gary Thorne shows us how much preparation he does for his job as Oriole TV PBP guy by telling audience that John Farrell this year has two lead off hitters, who he can alternate depending on which of them is hot: Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr.

Bogaerts has batted first in 17 games this season.

JBJ has batted first in zero games this season.

Red Sox most-used lead off hitters have been Betts (81 G) Eduardo Nunez (25) and Pedroia (20).

Thorne tonight has also repeatedly called Sam Travis "Sam Travers."
   19. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:37 PM (#5534755)
None of those hit things for the Rays thru 5.
   20. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 19, 2017 at 08:59 PM (#5534769)
MILESTONE ALERT:
Brad Miller's home run for the Rays was the 5,691st in MLB this season. That's 3 shy of breaking the MLB record set in 2000.

Might have even happened as I typed.

EDIT:
Max Kepler and Alex Presley homered, the 5,692nd and 5,693rd HR in MLB this season. That ties the MLB record, meaning the next HR breaks the mark set in 2000.
   21. Nose army. Beef diaper? (CoB) Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:01 PM (#5534772)
Well, Max Kepler just added one ...
   22. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:14 PM (#5534777)
Not sure I see the point of pinch-running Rajai Davis if he's not even going to try to steal. Holt butchering his sac attempt didn't help the failure to run him look any smarter.
   23. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:22 PM (#5534783)
Alex Gordon hits record-breaking HR #5,694
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:31 PM (#5534787)
Cardinals threw away this game, and any chance of trying to save this season.
   25. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:32 PM (#5534789)
And of course Fowler ties it up to make me look bad.. the guy must hate me. :)
   26. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:33 PM (#5534790)
The Pirates have turned into a big old bag of #### lately, haven't they? The twitters tell me they haven't finished an inning with the lead since last monday, 60 innings ago.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:38 PM (#5534792)
Cardinals still have an outside chance of tying the major league record for most players with 20 homeruns(7) (2017 Orioles, 2010 Blue Jays, 2009 Yankees, 2005 Rangers, 2000 Blue Jays, and 1996 Orioles(currently the 2017 Cubs/Reds hold the NL record with 6 tied with a couple of other teams, 2016 Cardinals/Nationals,2003 Braves) (neither the Cubs or the Reds have an outside chance of getting 7 players with 20 though...Cardinals currently only have 4, but have 3 more players with 17 or more)
   28. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5534794)
I didn't read yesterdays thread, but the day before we were commenting about rField on bb-ref and how it had changed, apparently it's been fixed(Gyorko is back to +17 or whatever at third for the season instead of +2)
   29. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5534795)
Rays have fourth longest average game length in MLB. Hmm, I wonder why.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:41 PM (#5534796)
Skimmed the omnichatter for yesterday, and didn't see any mention of Sean saying why bb-ref was screwed up for a day.
   31. Nasty Nate Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:50 PM (#5534799)
HOW MANY INNINGS WILL THE RED SOX PLAY TODAY!?
at least 10!
   32. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:50 PM (#5534800)
And the Sox and O's again go extras, although tonight it's 0-0 instead of 8-8.
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:55 PM (#5534803)
How do the Cardinals not challenge that, his foot was pretty clearly off the base.
   34. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:57 PM (#5534805)
Great job by the Cubs bullpen. Just keep it going for the next month and a half.
   35. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 19, 2017 at 09:59 PM (#5534807)
That was as good as Davis's stuff has looked all year.

Strop, Edwards, and Montgomery too.
   36. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:14 PM (#5534819)
Fowler earning nearly every penny of his contract today.
   37. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:17 PM (#5534820)
Two straight idiotic dives into first by Sox runners. Holt gets away with his because the pitcher had to make a very difficult play trying to glove a Baltimore Chop while on the run to the bag. But Bogaerts was particularly stupid, and compounded it by missing the bag with his lead hand, making him that much later.
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:19 PM (#5534824)
DeJong giving us some breathing room, a few more runs and our bullpen might be able to win this game.
   39. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:22 PM (#5534826)
And the Sox get their first run after Brach walks the bases loaded with 2 outs and bounces a WP off the plate.
   40. Tim D Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:26 PM (#5534831)
Alex Presley up looking for a triple to complete the cycle. Alex Presley!
   41. Tim D Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:27 PM (#5534832)
Tapper to the mound. Bummer.
   42. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:27 PM (#5534833)
Rhys Hoskins with a bases loaded double! The Phillies own the Dodgers!
   43. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:28 PM (#5534834)
Extra run is now huge.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:29 PM (#5534836)
Scooter Gennet hit, his 12th hr against the Cardinals this year (no clue the actual number, but it feels like that many)
   45. Heart of Matt Harvey Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:29 PM (#5534838)
Great AB by Hoskins, esp fouling off a couple of good 3-2 pitches.
   46. Heart of Matt Harvey Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:31 PM (#5534840)
Hopefully that half-inning convinces the Dodgers to leave Pedro Baez home in October.
   47. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:34 PM (#5534843)
Devers with yet another awful throwing error on a routine grounder with 2 outs to extend the game.
   48. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:35 PM (#5534846)
And the Devers error doesn't prove costly. Red Sox win.
   49. Chip Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:35 PM (#5534847)
And Barnes bails him out with an easy come backer to the mound from Mancini to end it.
   50. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:37 PM (#5534848)
That Red Sox pen has gone 14 innings and given up 2 earned runs in the last days to secure 2 wins. They really need someone to go 7-8 innings soon or the entire pen will just be gassed.
   51. Tim D Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:38 PM (#5534849)
Jed Lowrie grannie off Alex Wilson gives A's a 9-8 lead after Tigers were up 8-4. Tiger pitching is.... bad.
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:38 PM (#5534850)
Cardinals win a game.... sure it's against the Reds, but the Cardinals have the 2nd worst winning percentage against the central division among central division teams, that is entirely the reason they are out of the race(
   53. An Athletic in Powderhorn™ Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:39 PM (#5534851)
Good god, Jed. This team is kind of... fun. I haven't had cause to say that in a while.
   54. Tim D Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:44 PM (#5534854)
If you like K's and dingers the A's are your dream team.
   55. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:46 PM (#5534856)
50 - Big off day on Thursday plus for all these extra innings I think Farrell has done a really nice job of minimizing the over work. Porcello did them a solid on Saturday and then Sunday wasn’t bad with just Price and Maddox I think pitching out of the bullpen.
   56. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 19, 2017 at 10:53 PM (#5534863)
Brandon Phillips to Andrelton Simmons is such a pretty DP combination. Smooth AF.
   57. An Athletic in Powderhorn™ Posted: September 19, 2017 at 11:18 PM (#5534873)
If you like K's and dingers the A's are your dream team.
Not particularly. But for the last couple of weeks the A's have been playing like an actual major league team. It's a refreshing change.

Of course, I'm sure my mood will change if they can't hold this lead. I still don't have much faith in this pen.
   58. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 19, 2017 at 11:43 PM (#5534880)
Quiet as it's been kept, before tonight's game Aaron Judge's September numbers include 7 home runs and a 1.094 OPS. He's even had 4 games without a strikeout, and isn't pulling off from the plate on outside pitches as much as he has been for most of the Summer. He went 2 for 4 tonight with no strikeouts, and made two outs on balls hit right in front of the wall.
   59. Textbook Editor Posted: September 19, 2017 at 11:59 PM (#5534886)

In an alternate universe, Jed Lowrie is Brock Holt in Boston way before Brock Holt is Brock Holt in Boston... I'm glad he's having a good year.
   60. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: September 20, 2017 at 01:00 AM (#5534893)
#58. Judge is proving himself to be quite a star. His hot start, though HUGE, is not totally without precedence, but now for him to make adjustments after the lean period and start raking again is really impressive.

As a Red Sox fan though, I just wish Judge and everyone on the Yankees would just cool off for about a week and make it a little easier for the Sox to win the East. These extra inning contests are getting a stressful.
   61. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 20, 2017 at 01:18 AM (#5534894)
The Indians are hammering the Angel bullpen mercilessly. It's pitiful. Sigh.
   62. Joyful Calculus Instructor Posted: September 20, 2017 at 01:18 AM (#5534895)
Pedro Baez is a disgrace and Dave Roberts continues to piss away games by using him in high leverage situations. Baez better not be on the playoff roster.
   63. LA Podcasting Hombre of Anaheim Posted: September 20, 2017 at 01:28 AM (#5534896)
Justin Upton just homered, and the ball bounced into the "Homer Into The Can, Win A Million Bucks" can in center field. At least one good thing came out of this.

It's all relative. Think of what it's like to gain a lead in your own game, hold on while one of your star relievers comes within a pitch of blowing it, and then see your chief opponent come back from a 6 run deficit and win (again) in extra innings. Compounded by the fact that the team they came back against is your other favorite team, and that this other favorite team had previously gone 12 and 3 in extra innings.

And then wash, rinse, and repeat all this the very next night.

Let's put it this way: Right now I doubt if the Red Sox would want to change places with the Yankees.

Ironically, the first year I followed baseball the Yankees were leading the AL by 2 games over the Indians going into September, only to see the Indians go 19 and 5 that month. But since the Yankees also went 19 and 5, it didn't do the Indians any good. That's a bit like what I'm feeling at this point.

Seconded by everyone who is considering watching a Dodgers playoff game.

Andy's first year watching baseball was 1952.

Yep, when I was 8.

And now you know why I thought Yankees World Championships were written into the Constitution. I never knew any other team was allowed to win until I got to 4th grade.

But my 8 year old friends who were Indians fans are still waiting for 1948 to repeat itself, 65 years later. So I guess I shouldn't complain.

Oh no question about that. I stand by my statements earlier that the Yankees aren't going to lose many more games. If they lose 3 games the rest of the way I'll be surprised. The Sox need to go 7-4 to hold them off which they can do but it's far from a lock.

Justin Upton just homered, and the ball bounced into the "Homer Into The Can, Win A Million Bucks" can in center field. At least one good thing came out of this.

Sherwin Williams attorneys can make a lot of money explaining why it doesn't count?

If Sherwin Williams doesn't go ahead and make the $1m donation to the Angels Foundation, I hope the internet gets very, very angry.

I'm with you. I thought it was interesting how quickly the Angels came out and said it didn't count. That sounded to me like some higher ups had the conversation in advance and were told "no, we aren't paying in that case and we will fight it." In which case, yeah #### 'em.

Sherwin Williams reported more than $1.1 billion in profits in 2016. If they're going to used "but it bounced!!" as an excuse not to donate $1 million to charity, after all the advertising that they received from having the can out there, they should have their children taken away.

Are ground-rule doubles home runs? What did they say when they announced the promotion?
   78. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 20, 2017 at 04:47 PM (#5535344)
OK, fine, it looks like they specifically said "on the fly" in 2014 when the promo was announced, unless this page has been doctored in the last 24 hours (which is entirely conceivable). In that case, they can keep their children, but they're being dicks (and turning down a lot of good publicity) by not making the donation anyway.

EDIT: Behold! The internet agrees with me!
