HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

TIL: The Marlins have a better run differential than the Astros over their last 50 games. And a better record than the Cubs.
   3. Zonk, your King of All that Is Real Posted: July 15, 2019 at 03:05 PM (#5862036)
Better record than the Cubs over the last 50 games is hardly a big accomplishment. Fortunately, it would be for their division mates.
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 15, 2019 at 03:09 PM (#5862037)
The Orioles, Royals, Tigers & Blue Jays all have worse records than the Marlins. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Marlins overtook the Mets for 4th in the NL East, although it’s not the most likely outcome.
   5. Walt Davis Posted: July 15, 2019 at 05:34 PM (#5862065)
After today's game (not quite finished), 663 runs scored at Coors in 47 games, 14.1 per game. In Rox road games, 386 in 46 games, 10.6 pre game. A team has scored 10+ 24 times at Coors (including 3 times when both did), it's happened 3 times in their road games.

That's one way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing I suppose.
   6. stanmvp48 Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:00 PM (#5862075)
251 runs in the last 14 games. Mark Reynolds gets two hits and pitches the 9th. Who says he is finished.
   7. stanmvp48 Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:02 PM (#5862077)
Does anybody who watches the Rockies have a theory about what is wrong with Marquez
   8. stanmvp48 Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:05 PM (#5862079)
#5 Did you do the math wrong? 386/46 is not 10.6
   9. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:08 PM (#5862081)
Brandon Crawford 8 RBIs, not Ks. Amazing!
   10. Walt Davis Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:28 PM (#5862083)
386/46 is not 10.6

You need to read Trump's latest executive order!

386 is the correct number, I typed 486 into the calculator. So 8.4 runs per game for you math nazis.
   11. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 15, 2019 at 06:47 PM (#5862087)

The ugly face of tanking - Tigers Calling Up Rosenthal Despite Struggles:
The Detroit Tigers selected the contract of right-handed reliever Trevor Rosenthal on Monday despite his struggles at Triple-A since signing with the team following his release by the Washington Nationals.

He had a 10.13 ERA in six appearances for Triple-A Toledo since signing a minor league contract with the Tigers, allowing eight hits (two homers) and six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out nine and walked six. He had a 22.74 ERA in 6 1/3 innings over 12 appearances for the Nationals before he was released late last month.
Seems like just a half-step above forfeiting games to improve your draft picks.
   14. Man o' Schwar Posted: July 15, 2019 at 07:29 PM (#5862093)
The argument could be that it's not like he needs to learn something at AAA, so if you're going to keep him you might as well give him a shot. If he stinks at the big league level, then get rid of him after a few games. But there's no real value in holding him at AAA for the rest of the year. Either promote him or release him.

(Given those numbers, releasing him seems to make more sense. Is he hurt? Those are not the numbers of someone with a healthy arm.)
   15. Zonk, your King of All that Is Real Posted: July 15, 2019 at 07:34 PM (#5862095)
Those numbers seem exactly what you’d expect from a guy making his way back fromTJS. His command looks like it sucks and it wasn’t exactly exemplary beforehand.

He might need to go back.... well.

Never mind.
   16. Howie Menckel Posted: July 15, 2019 at 07:45 PM (#5862098)
looks like Kershaw allows a two-out single to Harper, then wild pitches him to second AND to third. then walks the next two guys. (then Bruce.... flied out.)

what the heck?
   17. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: July 15, 2019 at 07:46 PM (#5862099)
Jesus, Encarnacion with his jerking and twitching and his STANK face... not very Yankee-like. No like!

Red Sox SP is Rick "let's give back that lead as soon as possible" Porcello today.

I can see already the Sox up by 5 in first which Rick has already given back 2 runs in the 2nd, attaboy Rick!

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest Rick may not be with the Red Sox next year...
   21. rconn23 Posted: July 15, 2019 at 08:04 PM (#5862106)
The Yankees need pitching. So much pitching.

Checks standings...

NY with 2nd best record in MLB
NY with 2nd best run differential in AL

A bit hard to be sympathetic when your team is, you know, like really good.
   23. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 15, 2019 at 08:19 PM (#5862109)
Rick gives another 2 runs back, Sox clinging to the 5-4 lead. Should be behind by the 4th if Rick stays on the bump.
   24. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 15, 2019 at 08:22 PM (#5862110)
Damn good pick-up & throw by Aaron Judge nails runner trying to go 1st-to-3rd on single to right field.

I can’t remember the last time i saw Kyle walk two guys in an inning. I’m not sure I ever have.

"A bit hard to be sympathetic when your team is, you know, like really good."

That may be true, but they still need another starter. The offense can only do so much when you face the Verlander and Coles of the world.
   28. Edmundo got dem ol' Kozma blues again mama Posted: July 15, 2019 at 08:52 PM (#5862114)
Phans are not happy and letting the little league team that is on the field know it. Not running out ground balls, getting burned on a squeeze play and not covering first base to boot, allowing s double steal.

In spite of the meme of Phans booing, if you are a loyal fan and your team is continually making mistakes, booing is the proper course of action.
   29. Zonk, your King of All that Is Real Posted: July 15, 2019 at 08:54 PM (#5862115)
Tied.

The Schwarbird decloaks.
   30. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:15 PM (#5862116)
Mclaughlin has been letting loose a bit this year...bagging on pretty much everything, but this was kinda funny....Cardinals are home, Carpenter hits a ball, in which it's a close play at first base, the ump calls him out.... the Cardinals challenge... the replay is showed on the scoreboard in the stadium, and he was clearly safe..... "Here is the most exciting play in baseball.... the umpires going to the replay booth to figure out the call, after it's been shown on the replay to the stadium, in which everyone knows he was safe....."

priceless.
   31. Brian C Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:16 PM (#5862117)
I can’t remember the last time i saw Kyle walk two guys in an inning. I’m not sure I ever have.

Pretty sure I saw Kyle Ryan do it once or twice.
   32. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:16 PM (#5862118)
wow....Dickerson with a horrible "attempt at a catch".... a clear should have been out, and he f'ed it up..
   33. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:18 PM (#5862119)
If they have ruled that a hit...then the official scorer should be put in Trumps press office. That was as definitive of an error as you can create..
   34. cardsfanboy Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:41 PM (#5862121)
Fowler with a great play again... his defense has looked so much better this year (so has Ozuna's) than last year... This team has enough good players that they should be good, but not enough great players to be great. Or no great players... at least this year.
   35. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5862122)
Rick battles through 6! Only 8 hits and 4 ER given up...today that is sufficient as the Jays pitching has surrendered 10 so far to the good guys...
   36. Howie Menckel Posted: July 15, 2019 at 09:58 PM (#5862125)
in Colorado nightcap, Chi Chi and Rodriguez each threw 3 scoreless innings out of the gate for Rockies and Giants
   37. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:02 PM (#5862127)
What a horrible AB for Bote with the bases loaded 1 out. Takes the first pitch right down the middle, then swings and misses at 2 that are a foot outside in the dirt.
   38. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:04 PM (#5862128)
For the love of God. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Castillo throws 9 balls and 2 strikes to the next 2 hitters and strikes them both out.
   39. Brian C Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5862129)
The Bote AB, like you say, was awful. But Garcia struck out on a pitch that was just a great pitch. Can't be mad about that one.

But since the season started, Bote's gone from the guy that I'd most want to see at the plate with the bases loaded to the guy I'm pretty sure will strike out in any high-leverage situation.
   40. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:14 PM (#5862130)
WALK THAT PARROT! 4-2 Yanks
   41. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:14 PM (#5862131)
And Bote just booted a potential DP ground ball to allow the go ahead run to score
   42. Brian C Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:14 PM (#5862132)
Man, all-around meltdown this inning for the Cubs. Bote follows up his terrible clutch AB in the previous half-inning with botching a double-play ball.

Cishek finally gets an inning-ending DP on his third try.
   43. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:15 PM (#5862133)
Double Parrot Walk night for Encarnacion. 4-2 Yankees. It’s a potentially big series against the Rays. Still a lot of games left, but a good result gives the Yankees considerable breathing room. Conversely, the Rays winning the series would make it a real AL East race.
   44. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:29 PM (#5862134)
Red Sox very tired pen coughs up 4 runs, Sox clinging to 10-8 lead. Sox pen can turn any game into cliff hanger no matter the size of the lead.
   45. Brian C Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:33 PM (#5862136)
The B-Ref homepage has a photo of a guy in a Cubs uniform that I didn't recognize. Usually I recognize the Cubs players, at least from the last 30 years or so. Turns out it's Shane Victorino, who never played a game for the Cubs, but did end his pro career by signing with them and playing a grand total of 9 games for the AAA Iowa Cubs.

That was the full extent of his Cubs career. I feel hoodwinked.

ETA: And now the worst of it is that it distracted me to the point that I forgot what I went to B-Ref to look up in the first place.

ETA2: Oh right ... Mets. I was going to check in on how the Tim Tebow experience was going because I was reading about how the current Gators QB signed with the Red Sox and Tebow was mentioned. Worse than ever, it turns out.
   46. Lassus Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:37 PM (#5862137)
That dude was a Met.

EDIT: not the dude in #45, the dude who just hit his third HR of the night against the Yankees.
   47. rconn23 Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:37 PM (#5862138)
Travis d"Arnaud has three home runs versus the Yankees. 5-4 Rays. The Yankees are in big, big trouble this series.

Hey, Brad Brach isn't very good.
   49. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:50 PM (#5862142)
Sox hold on for the 10-8 win, Rick gets the W and moves to 7-7, not looking too good with that unsightly 5.37 ERA though.

   50. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 15, 2019 at 10:53 PM (#5862143)
The Yankees handily beat all the Rays except Travis d’Arnaud - a costly oversight. Luckily, there’s another game tomorrow.
   51. Walt Davis Posted: July 15, 2019 at 11:06 PM (#5862145)
That didn't sound like good baserunning.
   52. Howie Menckel Posted: July 15, 2019 at 11:11 PM (#5862146)
Luke Voit entered the night at .440 in his last 3 weeks - 11 for 25, with 5 doubles. aka, raking.

but he hasn't HR'd in more than a month (about 60 AB) and was 0 for 5 with 3 K tonight. had a 10-day DL stint plus All-Star break, but still seems like an odd combo of stats.

.280 BS and .261 xBA in 2019, the former fueled by some fortunate results in last 31 days - but that's not a big spread, either. 137 OPS+ for the season is solid.

sample size is small but not microscopic. I'll admit, I'm stumped on calling a trend here.

oh, and Voit is on pace for a 30+ HR season to rank among the league leaders - I'm just kidding. 17 HR in mid-July gets you a 6-way share of 22nd place in the AL.

The Brewers did not look particularly sharp in the field tonight and it cost them. 4-2 Braves. They're gonna win the NL East, aren't they?

Look for the Kole Calhoun highlight in this game. Flying catch down the right field line. It's spectacular.

I got to see the Tebow experiment tonight in Indy. He PH in the 9th, walked, scored and managed to bat again, flying out to track in CF. 20-1 rout. Big ovations for Tebow. A few Tebow jerseys in the crowd. Also a Kra nepool jersey which was cool.

I don't really know. Did not see the day game but floored he could get shelled like that. Looking at fangraphs, his velocity doesn't look down.

Well I'll start off by stating the Andrew Cashner experience thus far in Boston is not a good one.
