HOW WILL THE CUBS CLINCH THE CENTRAL TODAY????

While taunting the Cards by starting Mike Freeman at SS (scheduled day off for Russell and Baez resting after fouling one off his knee yesterday).

Also, I predict a 2HR day for Schwarber, just because.

HOW WILL BRYCE HARPER RETURN TO THE LINEUP TODAY??

With a 4-pitch walk off some guy named Thompson, natch. Not a "shot heard round the world", but 'twill do.
   5. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 26, 2017 at 07:39 PM (#5539553)
In his first game back from the DL, Aaron Hicks made a 1st-inning, bases-loaded, just-in-time, leaping-above-the-wall, barely-in-the-webbing catch. Nice work.
   6. Heart of Matt Harvey Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:04 PM (#5539560)
Snell could not buy a strike there. That's got to be one of the worst feelings for a pitcher.

Game on.

These Douche Perfect commercials on mlb.tv are insufferable. Please bring back the endless iPhone commercials with the William Onyeabor song.
   9. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:17 PM (#5539565)
Arrieta is on a pitch count again, 75-85.
   10. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:22 PM (#5539569)
Well, Carlos Martinez seems to be on his game tonight.
   11. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:28 PM (#5539574)
Well, Carlos Martinez seems to be on his game tonight.

So is Matt Carpenter.

   12. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:29 PM (#5539575)
Dan McLaughlin talking about Pham "Cardinals control him for another 3 years, despite the fact he has been in the organization for 12 years."

It kinda shows one problem with mlb's system. (I mostly support mlb's sytem personally, but there seems to be a few situations that you think is somewhat unfair.)
   13. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:31 PM (#5539576)
Oy. Arrieta, less so.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:33 PM (#5539577)
Fowler just seems to have a knack for placing balls which will become triples.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:38 PM (#5539581)
Fowler is now just 4 triples away in his career to break the top 50 among post integration players (I choose that because it's an easy pi search, and triples prior to the 30's was a lot more frequent)

I know it's not a huge deal or even something someone would know or care about(except me....I like triples) But still 81 career triples is a lot, 4th among active player, behind Jose Reyes(128-9th), Ichiro(96-30th), Granderson(92-35th).
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:40 PM (#5539582)
Cardinals with another triple this inning. 3-0 lead in the first.
   17. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:40 PM (#5539584)
Cubs are putting on quite the non-defensive clinic here. Just how fragile IS Russell's foot these days?
   18. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:41 PM (#5539586)
Said triple being made possible by the Cubs' generosity....
   19. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:41 PM (#5539587)
Just switched from the Yanks to the Red Sox game and HOLY SHIT
   20. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:42 PM (#5539590)
Grichuk's "triple" was eminently catchable, and of course he shouldn't have been batting to start with. This Freeman clown can go piss up a rope.
   21. 'Spos Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:43 PM (#5539591)
Jays playing equal opportunity spoilers.
   22. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:47 PM (#5539594)
Fowler is just a horrible centerfielder.
   23. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:49 PM (#5539597)
Jays playing equal opportunity spoilers.

No kidding. Teoscar Hernandez homered in all three of last weekend's games, and just hit another one tonight.
   24. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:49 PM (#5539598)
Not quite sure what Fowler was supposed to do with that particular hit (a low liner that split the gap almost perfectly), but ok.

DeJong deserves strategic credit for hitting his bouncer to the Cubs' token non-major leaguer...
   25. 'Spos Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:50 PM (#5539599)
Donaldson with a pair of bombs as well.
   26. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:51 PM (#5539600)
Not quite sure what Fowler was supposed to do with that particular hit (a low liner that split the gap almost perfectly), but ok.

Held the runner to a double. Get a better jump. He's behind the play more than any centerfielder I can ever remember watching. Make a decent throw to maybe make the guy who stumbled rounding first think a second about going for third.

   27. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:53 PM (#5539602)
So this ump can't see the outside corner strikes? That's 3 so far...
   28. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:55 PM (#5539605)
It is interesting how much better Fowler looked playing center in Wrigley than he has anyplace else. His first two home parks were probably the biggest center fields in baseball, Wrigley's the smallest.

Given the returns from his first season in a big-but-not-ginormous center field, I'll concede he's not very good out there.

That said, it would've taken a hell of a jump to cut that particular ball off, and I don't know that there's an outfielder in baseball who throws Happ out once the ball got to the wall.
   29. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:56 PM (#5539606)
So this ump can't see the outside corner strikes? That's 3 so far...

Including the one in the first inning to Zobrist? Which pretty much signaled he wasn't going to call that pitch.
   30. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:56 PM (#5539607)
Just how fragile IS Russell's foot these days?

I'm sure it's fine, and the regular rest is purely precautionary until playoff time. Sucks for arrieta tonight, though he did make a nice play there.

Well, wasn't going to be too upset about Jake's first, but this ones on him. Hard hit contact though throughout.
   31. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:57 PM (#5539608)
That said, it would've taken a hell of a jump to cut that particular ball off, and I don't know that there's an outfielder in baseball who throws Hall out once the ball got to the wall.

I was looking at where he was when the ball landed... He's just always out of the camera angle on those type of hits. He's significantly faster than Jon Jay, but Jon Jay was a better fielder. (and Jay wasn't good)

He's not Lou Brock or Lonnie Smith bad, but he's clearly, by the eye test , not even average.

I have nothing wrong with him as a player, like the guy, good bat, and every indication good bench presence, very good speed, smart player etc...but his flaw in his game is his defense.
   32. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 08:58 PM (#5539609)
Guess we'll clinch tomorrow, maybe.
   33. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:01 PM (#5539611)
I thought Fowler looked pretty good in CF last year but otherwise, not so much. And same thing: not getting a good jump on the ball.
   34. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:01 PM (#5539612)
It's the 3rd inning for ##### sake. Good God man, gotta up that intestinal fortitude before the playoffs start.
   35. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:02 PM (#5539613)
No one is playing good in the OF today.
   36. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:02 PM (#5539614)
Freeman doing his best to make up for that error that could not have turned out worse.
   37. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:03 PM (#5539615)
Moses (34);

Dammit, you're misreading my subtle reverse jinxing/hyper-literal optimism. You should know me better than that! (Reread my post with that in mind. :-) )
   38. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:04 PM (#5539616)
No one is playing good in the OF today.

Part of that with Pham was positioning(he was shallow) and part of that was the ball (tailing off the bat which is a bit harder play)

I think he is out, and if so, that was pretty impressive, although I'm not sure how legal that play is.
   39. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:05 PM (#5539617)
Arrieta has had better starts.
   40. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:06 PM (#5539619)
Freeman's out.

No? Ok...looked to me like his hand was resting on DeJong's foot when the tag was applied.

Edit: Though, what cfb said, re the legality of it.
   41. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:07 PM (#5539620)
Spahn, I also need to get in proper scolding shape for the postseason.
   42. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:08 PM (#5539621)
I think maybe his left hand was on the bag with the right hand on the shoe, thus inconclusive.
   43. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:08 PM (#5539622)
Outside corner to lefties is open though.
   44. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:09 PM (#5539623)
Jim Edmonds seems to think that one of his fingers made it to the bag... I'm not seeing it, he kept saying pinkie, but if anything, it would have been the thumb.
   45. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:09 PM (#5539624)
Pretty generous corner on strike three to Zo.
   46. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:10 PM (#5539625)
41:

Duly noted, though with all admiration, you're rarely out of midseason form.
   47. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:12 PM (#5539626)
I think it's a nice indicator of how far the Cubs have progressed as a franchise (specifically, the depth and quality of their position players) that the presence of a single non-major leaguer on the roster pisses me off. Hell, the last couple Dusty years, there'd have been about eight of those; now, I raise hell over an F-troop of one.
   48. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:13 PM (#5539627)
There's at least 2 with Taylor Davis.

   49. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:14 PM (#5539628)
Donaldson has hit 8 home runs in the last 6 road games.
   50. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:17 PM (#5539630)
Oh yeah...forgot Davis. In fairness, that's easy for me to do in light of how often he plays. If he ever sees a PA in a key spot, I'll add him to the list. This is the advantage of the Cubs having 17 catchers.
   51. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:18 PM (#5539631)
That was a wild AB.
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:19 PM (#5539632)
No, you do not walk in a run in this situation.
   53. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:20 PM (#5539633)
Martinez is doing some serious overthrowing.
   54. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:20 PM (#5539635)
Well, I'm confident in the Cubs getting at least 5 today. So let's hope the pitching tightens up.
   55. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:22 PM (#5539637)
Jeez, Ian....offer at a pitch down and in, then gripe about a straight fastball in the zone (or close enough to be swinging, anyway).

More than a run would've been nice, but I approve of their making Martinez work.
   56. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:23 PM (#5539638)
Not only do I want the Brewers to win very badly (and make WC2) I also have a $20 under bet on the Reds (70 wins), which I made during the NCAA tournament, after winning a few first round games, and letting it ride on something else. I'm hoping the Crew can take care of this on their own by winning these three, so I don't have to pull for a Cubs team playing out the string this weekend.
   57. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:23 PM (#5539639)
This probably is Jake's last inning.
   58. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:23 PM (#5539640)
Jake's command and mechanics just look really sloppy to me.
   59. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:24 PM (#5539641)
Uh, ok.
   60. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:25 PM (#5539642)
Speaking of horrible center fielders...Gyorko bailed him out.
   61. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:25 PM (#5539643)
Nice redemption throw by Happ there.
   62. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:26 PM (#5539644)
Echoing cfb' comments on Fowler, I like Happ a lot, but he's no center fielder.
   63. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:27 PM (#5539645)
This game has already been weird.
   64. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:31 PM (#5539647)
I'll bet Arrieta starts the fourth if his spot doesn't come up.
   65. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5539650)
Bullpens are gonna be busy tonight.
   66. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5539651)
Walk to Heyward. Barring a triple play or something similarly dumb, Jake's spot will come up.
   67. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5539652)
Echoing cfb' comments on Fowler, I like Happ a lot, but he's no center fielder.

He needs more time. Maybe it won't work, but with his tools it's worth trying (unless they're gonna give almora the everyday job.

Safe?
   68. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:36 PM (#5539653)
Whattaya know, Freeman does have some skills.
   69. 'Spos Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:37 PM (#5539654)
Teoscar Hernandez with his second bomb tonight.
   70. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:37 PM (#5539656)
Yep, definitely PH here.
   71. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:38 PM (#5539657)
You can't stop the Blue Jays! You can only contain them to 5 HR!
   72. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:38 PM (#5539658)
A couple more plays like that and Freeman might be out of the doghouse.
   73. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:38 PM (#5539659)
Couldn't say what you needed to say during the replay, Matheny? F you.
   74. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:39 PM (#5539660)
So, just glancing at the standings, it's theoretically possible for every AL non-playoff team to have a losing record this year:

- Rays lose two more games to Yankees
- Royals lose two more games to Tigers
- Mariners lose one more game to A's
- Rangers lose two more games to Astros
- Angels lose two remaining games against White Sox and/or Mariners

Five teams above .500, the rest below .500.

   75. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5539661)
That was just a poor initial call by the first base ump, no reason that should have needed to go to replay.
   76. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5539662)
####.

Wait. Nice.
   77. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:40 PM (#5539663)
Wow. That's probably way clutchier than any catcher's interference that Ellsbury's ever drawn.
   78. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:41 PM (#5539664)
Well that was fortuitous.
   79. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:41 PM (#5539666)
Carlos doesn't blow a throw to a bag, and it turns out to be catchers interference.
   80. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:42 PM (#5539668)
Zobrist, officially on my #### list.
   81. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:43 PM (#5539669)
What's the difference in WPA between a 1-2-3 DP and a run-scoring catcher's interference?
   82. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:43 PM (#5539670)
How is catchers interference an earned run?
   83. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:44 PM (#5539671)
This non clutch thing is stupid now. Thought it was over after that Brewers HR.
   84. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:44 PM (#5539672)
Don't wanna be dramatic, but the Cubs really can't afford to be scoring single runs off such juicy opportunities.
   85. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:44 PM (#5539673)
Geez.
   86. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:45 PM (#5539674)
Kinda pissed away that gift...
   87. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:45 PM (#5539675)
All things considered, that was a really lousy showing from the heavy hitters.
   88. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:45 PM (#5539676)
Feh.
   89. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:46 PM (#5539677)
Only run that scores is on the catchers interference, when you have bases loaded, no outs, and heart of the order up, we got luck as isht.
   90. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:47 PM (#5539679)
Yeah, you load the bases with the dreck at the bottom of the order, and none of the top three can cash in. Maddening,
   91. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:49 PM (#5539681)
Jesus H. Christ, you can't stop Willson from making a mound visit even when he's literally hopping on one foot the entire f'ing way.
   92. Spahn Insane, stimulus-funded BurlyMan™ Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:49 PM (#5539683)
What the Sam Hill is going on with the catchers in this series?
   93. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:50 PM (#5539685)
I'd give Martinez some credit for getting out of that. Looks like kind of a typical Carlos Martinez start. Brilliant with serious lapses into sloppiness.
   94. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:50 PM (#5539686)
I guess we call that the "Reverse Carter Capps"?
   95. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:52 PM (#5539688)
This zone is hurting the Cubs.
   96. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2017 at 09:56 PM (#5539691)
So far our one and two hitters have hit a homerun, seems like it's time for our number three hitter to hit a homerun.
   97. Nose army. Beef diaper? (CoB) Posted: September 26, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5539692)
Torreyes walked.

Fewest walks for anyone with over 300+ at bats.

And he's actually useful!
   98. Andere Richtingen Posted: September 26, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5539693)
Seems like an odd time to pull Martinez.
   99. Optimistic Moses Taylor, optimist Posted: September 26, 2017 at 10:06 PM (#5539694)
I want almora to play, but hate seeing schwarber gone so early.

Especially when it means heyward still hits against a lefty.
